'Rocky Horror Picture Show' cancelled tonight, and Brad is still an asshole

From the Films in Tompkins Facebook page:

UPDATE: Unfortunately, tonight's screening of THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW has been canceled due to bad weather.

Back next Thursday for another rainout!

This marks the fifth film this summer to be KO'd by the rain or threat of rain.

Storm brings down tree on St. Mark's Place

Uh-oh. @gaminette reports that tonight's stormy-ish weather uprooted this tree outside Natori on St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... amazingly, it doesn't appear that the tree caused any damage... missing a mini-van ... and any passersby...

How can I really be expected to post today when heavy thunderstorms are likely on the way?

As you may have heard, weather forecast people have been tossing around the D word in reporting today's weather — dope Derecho.

What is a derecho? Let's go to USA Today for the definition:

A derecho is a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with a band or shelf of rapidly moving thunderstorms.

So far, it seems our area will, fortunately, just see the side effects (possible/probable thunderstorms, heavy rain, possible flooding, unchecked hysteria).

So you should have your phone at the ready for some blog-worthy Instagrams! (Hint.) And stand in line for snacks at Trader Joe's, though it's likely too late.

Anyway! Here are photos from last July ... when derecho-like weather came our way ... these shots via EVG reader Tony Devers...

And do be careful today and tonight.

Pre-storm storm damage, maybe

Ahead of the severe storms headed our way this afternoon, some readers are already reporting wind damage.

Like here on Avenue A and Seventh Street... via @biggayicecream ...

Meanwhile ... here's what's headed our way...

And we'll be with you all afternoon. Until the power goes out.

In case you already haven't done so, RUN! HIDE!

Oh, just cashing in on the bad weather hysteria... Still, be careful out there...

Things to do late this afternoon: Watch for tornadoes

The Weather Channel says the area is under a Tornado Watch until 6 p.m.

No worries. I'm on top of the situation... just as long as I can get this thing to work that I found in the trash on St. Mark's...

Lightning strike at The Ludlow?

Zap! GammaBlog has some incredible video from last night's storm... Did lightning strike the Ludlow? (Top photo from GammaBlog's Flickr; whole thing via Curbed)

In any event, I'm hoping that the Bethenny Frankel statue atop The Ludlow wasn't damaged...

Cleaning up after the storm

City crews were out this morning at Seventh Street and Avenue B. Previously.

Tree nearly wipes out Banjara

Thanks to reader Annie for the shots below. More storm damage from last evening. Here, we're on Sixth Street and First Avenue. The tree just missed Banjara. (And check out the photos Slum Goddess took of the tree....)

Storm damage on Avenue B

What a storm tonight. Many thanks to EV Grieve reader Sergei, who captured some of the aftermath, particularly the downed trees at Seventh Street and Avenue B.

First, though -- the rainbow.

EV Grieve Storm Center

Many good things to do outdoors tomorrow, from Howl! to the East Village Radio festival at the South Street Seaport. However, the remnants of the deadly Tropical Storm Hannah promise to wash away any of those plans. (The Art Parade in Soho has already been canceled.)

I've been following Rolando's informative posts at Urbanite on Hannah...He also takes a look back at Hurricane Gloria, which smacked Long Island in September 1985. (His last post includes Weather Channel footage of Gloria via YouTube.)

Speaking of Gloria and YouTube...Here are a few jokesters in Brooklyn who made a parody of reporters covering a storm back during Gloria's days in 1985. (It's in two parts; the second half shows a wee bit of Coney Island.) Watch only if you're really bored.

Not to ruin your Friday evening, but....RUN FOR COVER!

Holy shit.

Hmm, what's on the news?

And why am I sitting in front of a computer at this hour? Seeking shelter?
