Scenes of standing water in Tompkins Square Park today

Top photo by Joe; all others by Steven

There were plenty of reports showing flooding and damage throughout the city during today's storms... as remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia prompted flash flood warnings.

Central Park had nearly 6 inches of recorded rainfall, per media reports. Closer to home, there were many clips showing flooding along the FDR near the Williamsburg Bridge.

We saw a lot of standing water in Tompkins Square Park, but thankfully no downed trees...
The area near the chess tables at the entrance to Seventh Street and Avenue A seemed to have the most flooding...
Whether by roads or public transportation, getting around today was a maddening experience. As Gothamist reported earlier: "Commuters and critics alike said their experiences reflected poor planning by city and state officials and severe lack of communication in the face of a cascading situation."

Regarding Henri

We're officially on storm watch, as this random photo from First Avenue and Sixth Street doesn't really show.

As of 11 a.m., Henri is now a hurricane, and warnings have been issued for parts of Long Island, Connecticut and Rhode Island... In NYC, we're under a tropical storm warning... with strong winds and heavy rains arriving overnight... Gothamist has a nice recap of all this here

Storm damage: reports of trees and limbs down; Ace Bar's curbside structure collapses

The high winds from this evening's thunderstorm KO'd a tree outside 323 E. 10th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B... coming to rest on a car in the process, as these photos from a longtime reader show...
Hard to tell from the pics, but it appears the car may have been spared serious damage... and no injuries.

Meanwhile on Avenue B at Seventh Street (thanks @theenemieslist1!) ...
From 11th Street and Second Avenue (not 12th as ID'd on the tweet)... And on Fifth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B, the curbside structure outside Ace Bar flipped over... (thank you @tjack411) ... also no injuries reported here...
The FDNY helped stack up the remains of the structure...

Because we haven't had a tropical storm yet this year

[Photo on Avenue A yesterday by Derek Berg]

The New York City Emergency Management Department today urged New Yorkers to prepare for potential impacts of Tropical Storm Fay. The National Weather Service has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for New York City in effect from 6 a.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday. A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for the City from 6 a.m. Friday, July 10 through late Friday night.

With Fay’s track expected to impact NYC, NWS is forecasting moderate to heavy rain to move into the area early Friday morning, continuing throughout the afternoon before tapering off around midnight Saturday. A total of 1 to 2 inches of rain is forecast with this system, with locally higher amounts of 2 to 4 inches possible. Severe thunderstorms cannot be ruled out with this system.

High winds are also in the forecast on Friday, with sustained winds 35 mph to 45 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. Winds are expected to taper off overnight Friday into early Saturday morning.

Tree down on 9th Street

At least one tree casualty from the storm that rolled through late this afternoon... EVG reader Penny Rand shared these photos from Ninth Street just a little east of Avenue B along the Christodora House...

"I watched it get uprooted and tossed like a little twig," she said...

Storm brings down this tree on 6th Street

This tree took a fall — roots and all — early this evening during the storm on the north side of Sixth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue. Thankfully no one was injured, and the car looks to have suffered just minor damage all things considered...

EVG reader Danny shared these photos... showing the NYPD helping clear the tree from the street...

One witness said that the tree's roots were rotted.
