The Neighborhood School’s Holiday Fair is back

From the EV Grieve inbox...

[From a Holiday Fair a few years back...]

The Neighborhood School’s beloved Holiday Fair is back! On Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, come on out to support a public school and have a blast. There’ll be carnival games, arts & crafts, face-painting, print-making, henna and temporary tattooing, a huge kid-built maze (made of deconstructed cardboard boxes — the urban equivalent of a corn maze), a raffle, our famous silent auction and great food from your favorite neighborhood vendors.

Auction items up for bids this year include an autographed, limited-edition Handsome Dick Manitoba bobblehead, classes in trapeze, parkour and trampoline at STREB; gift certificates to fabulous East Village and Lower East Side shops like The Bean, Exit 9, Alphabet City Acupuncture, Sugar Sweet Sunshine, East Yoga, Saxelby Cheesemongers, Grace Heaven Organic Salon, il laboratorio del gelato and more; fabulous Trina Turk jewelry; memberships at MOMA and the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and many more. Bid online until Friday at 5 pm; live auction at the school on Sunday at 2:30 pm.

Admission to the fair is free and open to the public. Wondering what a progressive public school in the East Village is like? Come check us out! It’s a great (and cheap) way to have fun indoors with your kids on a cold winter’s day; you get to shop and nosh and your kids get to run around with their friends.

Proceeds from the fair support the Neighborhood School PTA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization.

[EVG Flashback] Ray's new Saturday evening delivery service starts tomorrow

Originally posted on Feb. 12, 2010...

You may have seen the menu earlier this week at Bob Arihood's Neither More Nor Less... Starting tomorrow, a group of Ray's devotees/volunteers are starting a new delivery service every Saturday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. So now you can get all of Ray's faves brought right to your door... Two of the organizers — Kyla Raskin and Arianna Gil — answered a few questions for me:

Why did you decide to start this?

An idea about a delivery project had been circulating for a while. Emily Allan had proposed this informally to a bunch of neighborhood kids when she worked at Ray's, and when all the news about his back rent came out we decided it would be a good time to make it really happen. We all really care about our neighborhood, each of us grew up in the East Village and remember Ray's from our childhood. We continue to pay the place frequent late night visits. The idea of Ave. A without Ray's was too scary for any of us to sit by and watch it close. Hopefully this project will attract more customers to Ray's, and help pick up the slow winter nights.

How many delivery people are involved?

There are 10 delivery people signed up for shifts so far: Emily Allan, Kyla Raskin, Arianna Gil, Max Brown, Bobby Yankou, Max Aserlind, Nate Hohouser, Zamber Diekman, Robin Giordani, and Becca Sturcken. These are all volunteer shifts that happen every Saturday from 7 pm-5 am, in two, five-hour shifts with two people per shift. We have had several meetings to organize it and the turn out has been really positive. What's cool about the project is that it has attracted a pretty eclectic group of kids from the East Village.

What does Ray's mean to you?

Ari: Ray's is a place I love for several reasons. First being that it is one of the few things that I can clearly remember existing when I was growing up. I really grew to love it though when I started going there with my friends there late nights after shows and such. Fries and Milkshakes at 2 in the morning was beyond amazing. Most importantly though it is an East Village business that has a tight relationship with the community. I have seen so many businesses move into my neighborhood, even my block, that I never seen people from the community utilizing. The only thing they really contribute to is higher rent. Ray is a true old school New Yorker, he is so warm and positive and that really translates in his business.

Kyla: Ray's started as a place my friends and I would go to after our activity for the night (be it a concert, etc.) was over, but we weren't ready to head home yet. We'd stay for hours and hang out with all the East Village folks that have spearheaded hanging out around the neighborhood. Ray is always inviting, and always such a positive way to end a night — eventually he was teaching me how to make milkshakes (I wanted to impress a boy who loved his milkshakes), and later, my friend and I started spending time on the other side of the counter, helping Ray out in the after-hours shifts, making fries as the sun came close to rising.

What was Ray's reaction to your idea?

When we brought Ray our proposal he received it really well. His main concern was if people were really going to show up for their shifts. We printed out an old school facebook of all the people involved to show him how many people had committed. We told him how they were all kids who grew up in the neighborhood, he said "oh beautiful" with a smile. The only thing he seemed reluctant about was that he'll get calls when he doesn't have a delivery person handy, but we set up the Internet phone so that that was impossible. Saturday nights, we'll always have one person sitting by the computer and one out making the deliveries. Our biggest fear is that it won't generate enough profit to be a substantial project, so CALL US! (1-718-473-9636).

'There is still community in the East Village'

East Village resident (and reporter) Lilly O'Donnell wrote an essay on last night's Bob Arihood memorial for Gothamist. An excerpt:

[T]here was a sense that one more piece of “the old neighborhood” was gone. "I hope this is not a wake for the East Village itself,” said Eddie Dunn, who has lived in the neighborhood for half a century. “He represented something that’s disappearing.”

But the crowd that gathered in front of Ray’s Candy Store on Avenue A proved that there is still community in the East Village, no matter how much people like to say otherwise.

Cancer benefit for TenEleven co-owner Evelyn McCue this Thursday night

The following information is on Facebook... slightly edited for this post

For those of you who are not aware, Evelyn's cancer has returned and we have decided to have the biggest and baddest fundraiser for her so that she won't have to worry about money and bills while recovering.

The date of the fundraiser is Thursday from 7:30 on.

There will be bands - including a solo performance from Uncle Leon of Uncle Leon and the Alibi's at 8 pm and John Embree's Shit show at 9 pm ... a comedy set from Margaret Champagne as well as a panda and a clown.

We have some awesome stuff to raffle off too, including prizes from Tease and Shampoo salon, dinner for two at Porchetta, bar tabs from Doc Holliday's, Royale, Cafecito, Blue Ruin, Milano's, The Library and Nice Guy Eddie's...

PLEASE note that there will be a $10 admission at the door and all tip proceeds will be donated to the cause.

We've always liked Evelyn and TenEleven (this is the former Mickey's Blue Room space), the kind of bar we need more of around here ... featuring the works of local photographers and artists ... and hosting the occasional musician as well as group events...

Second Line March tonight at d.b.a for Ray Deter

Tonight at 7, friends of Ray Deter are invited to d.b.a. on First Avenue to take part in a Second Line March. Per the bar's Manhattan Facebook page: "Please everyone bring a candle, if you like an umbrella, and perhaps a tambourine. And ladies please bring a white handkerchief. We plan to send Ray off in the spirit he would have wanted. N'awlins style." See Edible Manhattan for more details.

[Updated] d.b.a. owner Ray Deter in critical condition after bicycling accident

The folks at d.b.a. asked us to share the following message about Ray Deter, who owns dba on First Avenue as well as the locations in Williamsburg and New Orleans:

We are reaching out to every one of our patrons and friends to please send your prayers and loving energy to Ray Deter at this time.

As some of you may have heard, Ray was in a very serious bicycle accident yesterday and is in critical condition. For those of you who are hearing this for the first time, we are so sorry to share this news in this manner, though we are grateful for the tool to reach many of you.

We believe your healing prayers, and energy and whatever loving means you have, can really help Ray pull through, and this is a request for just that.

At this time we ask that you please not call the bars, and we will keep you up to date.

The accident happened yesterday at 5:30 p.m. at West Broadway and Canal Street. Friends will post updates on the dba Facebook page.

[Updated] The Daily News had an item on the accident this morning... though at the time, the paper didn't have Ray's name yet. According to the article, a silver Jaguar that was driving east on Canal Street hit Ray. "The driver remained at the scene but received a summons for possessing a small amount of marijuana," the Daily News reported.

The holiday tree of Tompkins Square Park

Several readers have asked about history of the Tompkins Square Park holiday tree... there's a new sign, unveiled during last Sunday's tree-lighting ceremony, that provides the detail.

Per The Villager:

The event also marked the installation of a sign designating the tree as an East Village AIDS memorial. The Parks Department donated the spruce in 1992, at the request of former Community Board 3 Chairperson Albert Fabozzi, in remembrance of Glenn Barnett — an advocate of the park’s restoration — also in observance of neighbors’ continuing efforts to maintain the park, and in commemoration of community members lost to AIDS.

O Holy 'Unsilent Night'

The Wall Street Journal writes today about one of the cooler traditions around... Phil Kline's "Unsilent Night," now in its 18th year... happens tomorrow night... Here's the Journal:

The premise is simple: On Saturday at 7 p.m., people of all kinds will gather in Washington Square Park, and everybody with the means to do so will press play on a tape or CD or MP3 of music composed by Mr. Kline for the occasion. Then the whole mass will walk — more than a little majestically— to Tompkins Square Park, where the affair comes to a gentle end 45 minutes later. The music is wordless, made up mostly of what sounds like bells and chimes swirled together into something communal. The effect of it moving down city streets is mesmerizing.

"It's an overwhelming physical experience," said Luc Sante, author of the fabled book of New York lore, "Low Life," and a friend of Mr. Kline's. "Listening to it echo back and forth and ripple through the crowd — it's a collective activity, like being in a choir without singing."
