A Thanksgiving Day message to stop throwing eggs on 9th Street

Spotted on Ninth Street and First Avenue... 

Happy Thanksgiving

Are you throwing eggs at the people in the encampment, or do you know who is? Please ask them to stop. 

Likewise, whoever has been throwing eggs at buildings 400, 402, 404, 406... please stop.

Officially on egg watch now in Tompkins Square Park

The egg watch clock (don't forget to set it ahead one hour tonight) is on in Tompkins Square Park for the resident red-tailed hawks, Amelia and Christo.

Goggla has been keeping tabs on the two. From a post earlier this week:

I wasn't positive of the situation until I returned to the park at sunrise this morning and found Christo laying down in the nest and Amelia perched nearby. He came out for a few minutes and they mated, then returned to the nest with tree bark. At that point, Amelia laid back down in the nest and remained there for most of the day. I saw them trade places twice, which is classic brooding behavior.

Hawks usually lay 1-3 eggs over the span of a few days. After the first egg is laid, they will continue to leave the nest to mate, but Amelia will stay in the nest through the night. Last year, Amelia appeared to lay her first egg March 13, so they are early this year. However, I'm not really surprised as they completed their nest in January and have been mating regularly over the last few weeks. Incubation will take about six weeks, so a hatch time would be mid to late April.

Not sure of the enhancements in store for the nest — we didn't spot any posted work permits ...

Bird watch: A nesting American robin on 3rd Street and Avenue B

An American robin recently built a nest on the fire escape outside David Browning's window on Third Street near Avenue B ... and this past weekend, two of the eggs hatched.

David shared these photos that he took during the last few days...









"I feel lucky these robins picked my fire escape for their nest," said Browning, who has lived in the building for 16 years. "It’s really awesome to watch unfold."

Here are two of the most recent photos of the eggs belonging to the hawk couple (Christo and Dora for now) of Tompkins Square Park. They're up on the East Ninth Street side of the Christodora House … at Avenue B…

The hawk couple (Christo and Dora for now) of Tompkins Square Park now have three eggs in the nest on the 7th floor of the Christodora House... Goggla, who has been monitoring the activity here, figures that we could see some baby birds in the first couple of weeks of May.

As you may know, the resident hawk pair of Tompkins Square Park have built a nest on the East 9th Street side of the Christodora House at Avenue B…







Goggla, who has been documenting the hawks in recent months at Gog in NYC, along with the other hawk watchers, were pretty sure that Dora (a name for now for the female hawk) had laid an egg on a nest on the 7th floor…

Well, she certainly has, as this photo by Francois Portmann at Gog in NYC shows …
