"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" filming today on Sixth Avenue: What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Lots of film equipment parked around the Boobs Barf & Beyond store on Sixth Avenue. Run, Chelsea, run!

Jeremiah has the tally from "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" so far.... And here's BoweryBoogie's coverage of the Nic Cage pic.

I hope that "Salt" is a more exciting movie than these photos

I walked on Second Avenue and Second Street yesterday around 5 where the crew was camped out for the CIA thriller "Salt" starring Angelina Jolie. And I saw...not much. Trucks! Lights! Did I miss the mayhem? Anything? Later, it was suggested that they might not have done any filming because of the rain. It was my understanding, though, that the crew would be filming inside and on the steps of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection on Second Street. Let's say that they didn't film, does all this sit around for a few more days...? Or will this be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader later this summer? And when will it actually stop raining anyway, June?

Things to do if you're filming a movie today on Second Street and have some downtime

You know moviemaking! You stand around for 10 hours waiting to film a 45-second scene. Lots of downtime. So for the cast (Angelina!) and crew of "Salt," filming today on Second Street, here are some things that you can do right around the shoot location...

Shop for Christmas and Valentine's Day decorations at the 99-cent store on First Avenue near Fifth Street...

Buy a few beers to go from the Houston Village Farm on First Avenue at Fourth Street...

Window shop at Brickman and Son's on First Avenue...

Take your dry cleaning to the Hollywood-sounding Exquisite Cleaners on First Avenue at Third Street...

See if "Salt" will be a box-office hit at the modest-sounding Gifted Psychic on Third Street...

Sell your Academy Award here... (or at least get your bangs trimmed)

Try a massage at the Waterfront Spa on Second Street...

Do a few loads of laundry at First Avenue at Second Street...

Watch the NYC theatrical debut of "Ice People" at the Anthology Film Archives at Second Avenue and Second Street...

Drink at the Mars Bar...

Why the paparazzi will be in the East Village tomorrow (OMG! Angelina!)

"Salt" is expected to be one of the big Hollywood summer movie smasheroos upon its release on July 23, 2010. It's a CIA thriller (a rogue agent!) with Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It's being directed by Phillip Noyce.

First, of course, the movie needs to be made. Which is why they're filming in the East Village tomorrow, specifically on Second Street between First and Second Avenues.

It promises to be one humdinger of a production. (Let's hope this scene doesn't call for confetti.) "It's the biggest film shoot in New York City right now," a crew member told me. They've been filming around the city...and in Albany! (It's such a big film, Tom Cruise was once going to play the lead role.) The crew member was sitting on the steps the Russian Orthodox Cathedral keeping an eye on the equipment. This was the easy part, he said. Because tomorrow...

...he'll have to help keep the paparazzi at bay. "You'll know when she's here."

"Salt" substitute

The Divine Liturgy this morning at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Protection on Second Street was held in the basement this morning...

...as the church is prepped for a scene tomorrow in the Angelina Jolie thriller "Salt." (And now you know why the headline to this post is so corny.)

Wardrobe and hair and makeup will also be taking place tomorrow in the basement hall.

An independent film shoot at Sophie's

On Saturday morning, there was a small film crew assembled in front of Sophie's. Perhaps Bourdain was back for seconds?

Uh, nope...I asked one of the fellows standing there what was happening...he said it was a small independent film. This was their first day of shooting...and they were expecting to be done for the day by the opening 2 p.m. bell at Sophie's.

Man, I loved him in "Getting Even with Dad!"

Filming for the new HBO series "Bored 2 Death" is happening around the neighborhood...

Right now they're holed up in Odessa on Avenue A.

The show stars Jason Schwartzman and Ted Danson. When I took the photo of the flier the other day, two guys in their mid-20s were looking at it. One said something about Ted Danson. His friend replied, seriously, "Yeah, he was in 'Becker.'"

Ludlow Street's iconic Kleen-Stik Industries becomes a cantina

Between Stanton and Rivington at 139-141 Ludlow, at the site of the Kleen-Stik Industries, Inc.

Oh, sorry...This is just a prop set for filming the TV series Cupid today. But don't give anyone any stupid ideas!

In October, our friend BoweryBoogie reported that the beloved graffiti exterior of the building had been cleaned. Perhaps this is why...for the film shoot?

The grittiest, most realistic 90 seconds of any film ever set in New York City

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the particular clip that I was looking for from Taxi Driver. Or The French Connection. Or Sweet Smell of Success. Or...

But! We do have Weekend at Bernie's. Which is appropriate since this classic from 1989 is set during Labor Day weekend. I'm still trying to figure out what route our heroes took to work...

Meanwhile,...I can't remember what the critics thought. They loved it too, right?

Oh.

How dopey will Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist make Manhattan look?

Several nights last December, parts of Avenue A were jammed for yet another big movie production. That movie, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (based on the teen novel), will be released Oct. 3. The trailer is now in theaters. (And online...)

Here's a piece on the movie, where two teens meet cute in Manhattan and end up having a wacky night with the city as their playground, from MTV.com last Dec. 14:

Film sets are places of controlled spontaneity, but even MTV News got more than we bargained for during a late-night visit to the set of "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist," starring Kat Dennings and Michael Cera, where the wind howled, the people screamed and the actors threw everything but the kitchen sink at us — that is, when the fine citizens of the Big Apple weren't throwing it at them first.
"That's filming in New York for you!" Dennings laughed when a loud truck cut her off midsentence. "Soon some homeless guy is going to throw a banana at me. We've had homeless guys throwing avocados, tomatoes, random blunt objects. It's been amazing! I mean, you really can't fake real New York."
It would all be massively rude, if it all weren't somehow oddly appropriate, given the farcical nature of the story about two teens sharing one wild night in Manhattan, during which just about everything that can happen does.

And a video clip!

Why the East Village will be a mess tonight and tomorrow

Hmm, there's an ABC show called Cupid (rhymes with stupid) in the works. (Get this: It's an update of the short-lived 1998 series by the same name. Are they so desperate in TVLand that they have to ransack shows that just aired 10 years ago?) From the looks of the parking restrictions starting tonight and lasting through Wednesday, only half the neighborhood should be inconvenienced by this! Hope they bring helicopters!

OMG! Isn't that Oliver Platt?!

New York magazine has a listing of some of the movies that will be filming around town this summer. In the LES, two projects are listed, including the new film by Nicole Holofcener starring Catherine Keener and Oliver Pratt (an EV Grieve favorite, by the way). Among the locations: Economy Candy. And the premise: It "concerns a family that wants to expand its two-bedroom but must wait for the cranky old lady in the apartment next door to die." Hmm, based on a true story?

Meanwhile, the listing didn't mention the new Woody Allen film with Larry David that was shooting in the neighborhood in recent weeks. (I was walking on St. Mark's when they were filming at Cafe Mogador. I sure appreciated the young twentysomething PA who yelled at me to keep walking when I was, in fact, walking.)

Anyway, just a few short months before the filming starts on Night at the Museum 2!
