On Friday, I got a better look at the renovation of the former Two Boots/Pioneer Theater space...
Previously on EV Grieve:
Work on Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre begins at former Two Boots space (And maybe we can get another comments thread going on cargo shorts...)

Joe Jr's has closed
I thought that Joe Jr's was closing today. As you likely read (via Serious Eats, Eater, Grub Street, David Kamp or the Times), the iconic diner on Sixth Avenue at 12th Street was calling it a day. So I wanted to stop by one last time for a meal. Not to write about -- Jeremiah and Brooks both have eloquent posts on the topic.
Anyway, was too late. Joe's has already closed. (And the Joe Jr's on the corner of the sign is missing...)
There's a sign on the front window for people to leave messages...thanking Joe's for the memories, etc.
Meanwhile, the interior has already been pulled apart.
And the bat!
Back out front, a man remarked to his girlfriend: "All the great old places we like have been destroyed."

A July 4 fireworks spectacular!

When EV Grieve tried to take the train out east this weekend
Don't mind all these Penn Station photos. Bored. Was trying to go Belmont Park the other day. First post for the race: 1 p.m. Unfortunately, no one told this to the LIRR, who thought the first post was 3 p.m. So there wasn't a train for the 75 or so people standing around waiting to go to Belmont. Eventually, an LIRR manager type came out to talk to the group and offer an apology, but blamed Belmont officials for the snafu. Another train was promised, though after waiting an additional 45 minutes, we got antsy and left for plan B.

From Page Six today:
It only took Courtney Love eight hours to trash her high-end hotel room at The Inn on Irving Place.
While the rocker was visiting New York on June 17 with her 16-year-old daughter, Frances Bean, sources say Love completely ruined her accommodations.
The hard-partying 44-year-old widow of Kurt Cobain left dirty needles and used feminine hygiene products behind, according to sources, and also flooded the floor.
July 4 with the Ramones
Here's a snippet from "End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones" that looks at the band's July 4, 1976, performance in the UK. According to NME: The Ramones "took over the hippy Roundhouse and reduced it to the hottest, sleaziest garage ever."

N. Korea accuses U.S. of trying to start war
Oops. I may have my headlines mixed up. Sorry! Anyway, please handle sparklers and all other illegal fireworks carefully this July 4. Also, please do not try this at home.

Putting a shine on Ray's
In this week's issue of The Villager, Scoopy has the story of some (current and former?) C-squat residents who spent a weekend helping spiff up Ray's after his recent visits from the health department. At Seventh Street and Avenue A, of course. Speaking of which, when you're out and about this weekend, be sure to stop by...

Walkman this way
Wow — the Sony Walkman was introduced 30 years ago this week. Which reminds me. I recently busted out my portable AM-FM/cassette Walkman from a long time ago. I needed a radio for something. Anyway, I was inspecting the Walkman on a crowded 4 train. And I discovered a tape was in the Walkman. XTC's "Skylarking"! (Had I used this thing since, say, 1986?) I was fumbling around with the batteries. Then I realize. These two recent-college-grad types are looking at me in mild disbelief and horror, perhaps. Like I'm poor or low-tech and can't have an iPod. When the tape rewinds, I give them a nod and press play.
