Christmas returning to the East Village this week with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

At least in the form of a film shoot for an Untitled Christmas Eve project starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie.

According to the production notes, the comedy "is about an annual reunion of three childhood best friends on Christmas Eve."

The studio has already given it a Nov. 25 release date.

Crews will be filming overnight Tuesday into Wednesday at 650 E. Sixth St., 108 Avenue B (Vazac's/7B) and Tompkins Square Park, according to the handy fliers on East Seventh Street…

When it comes time to toss the tree

Now that it is nearly Valentine's Day, people are making the difficult decision to discard their holiday/Christmas trees despite the fact that they're still green and will last through September.

So it might be tempting to discard the trees along a seemingly quiet stretch of a street…

…or help create a green space/sustainable community…

…or send it crosstown…

…or you could get a good cardio-strength training combo workout and drag the tree to the center of Tompkins Square Park ahead of MulchFest 2015 next weekend…

It will be mulch appreciated! (God, sorry for that.)

Zoltar feels window pane and pain, probably

Uh-oh. EVG reader Olympias Epiriot notes trouble at the home of Zoltar this morning outside Gem Spa.

As you can see, his front window onto Second Avenue has fallen back… or perhaps it was pushed back! Hopefully his flute is still safely tucked inside his cummerbund … and his jewelry is safe.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner ... and next to the Entenmann's at Key Food

It's never too soon to say it seems awfully early to start selling Valentine's candy.

Native Bean reopens in new Avenue A home

The Native Bean reopened this morning in its new home at 36 Avenue A between East Third Street and East Second Street (the former space that Angelina Cafe used before moving across A).

The Native Bean closed up its coffee-and-bagel shop at 50 Avenue A on Nov. 26 ahead of the move.

No. 50 had been on and off the market since September 2011.

Haven't heard what is going into the storefront other than a construction worker's generic "restaurant" response...

Fire reported in basement of Black Crescent on Clinton Street

We came across a large FDNY presence last night around 9 on Clinton and Rivington. An electrical fire apparently started in the basement of Black Crescent, an oyster and cocktail bar at 76 Clinton St.

As The Lo-Down noted, firefighters had to break all of the windows in the restaurant.

Firefighters were breaking the windows when we arrived.

There's no word this morning on the extent of the restaurant's damage. The owners haven't mentioned anything about the fire just yet on their social media properties.

Feeling 'Nausea'

Parquet Courts perform the title track from the recently released record "Content Nausea."

A sneak peek at 'The Shell-Shocked Nut'

Photos and text by Stacie Joy

The East Village Dance Project (EVDP) at 55 Avenue C invited me for a rehearsal for its alternative, East Village-based adaptation of "The Nutcracker" and it’s marvelous!

I watched kids of all ages (well, ages 4 to 17, 25 of whom are paired with 25 ballet/dance professionals) work closely with director and superstar choreographer Martha Tornay while codirector Victoria Roberts-Wierzbowski educated me about the piece and its significance to the area.

This nontraditional take on the holiday mainstay includes a magical journey through iconic locations such as Tompkins Square Park, CBGB, a tenement apartment, a local community garden and a neighborhood favorite – Economy Candy.

Most of the kids are local (about 95 percent are from the neighborhood), and consider this a "gift to the community." Its conception came soon after Superstorm Sandy caused so much damage to the area, including taking out the boiler and the electricity at the dance space.

Even without lights and dependent on space heaters and heavy clothing, the students got together and performed that year. They begged their teacher to stage "The Nutcracker" as a way to lift their spirits and give back to the community.

Ms. Tornay finally agreed, with the provision that they do a nonstandard, community-based adaptation. And so "The Shell-Shocked Nut" was born!

The nonprofit arts-services EVDP welcomes all students without consideration of their financial situation or economic means. It receives part of the Charlotte Ruby Cantor scholarship fund and also is running a woefully underfunded crowd-sourcing campaign if you are interested in lending a helping hand.

"The Shell-Shocked Nut" will be staged at La MaMa Ellen Stewart Theatre tonight through Sunday. Please see the website for times and tickets.

Special thanks to Bonnie Stein, executive director, for reaching out and coordinating the coverage.

A petition and holiday card campaign to help return the former PS 64 to the community

A few updates about the former PS 64 and CHARAS/El Bohio community center on East Ninth Street.

Back in September, the Department of Buildings put a stop, for now, to developer Gregg Singer's plans to convert the long-emtpy building between Avenue B and Avenue C into a dorm.

City Councilmember Rosie Mendez's office recently launched an online petition asking Mayor de Blasio to return the building to the community. Per the petition:

The building at 605 East 9th Street had an impact on many generations of the Lower East Side / East Village residents. [The] landmarked building that was auctioned off by Mayor Guiliani 16 years ago and the building has been empty for more than 13 years. This building has been a beacon of hope, inspiration, culture, and community for the residents of the Lower East Side.

We need to bring back the building for community use and ensure that our history is not forgotten or erased. Our community still needs this building for engaging in the arts, educating each other of our history, and providing social programs for the children, young people, adults, and seniors that make up this beautiful neighborhood.

We’re asking Mayor Bill de Blasio to use his power to undue an injustice perpetrated by Mayor Guiliani and listen to the Lower East Side/East Village community by returning this building for community use.

You can find the petition here.

Meanwhile, the grassroots organization SOCCC (Save Our Charas Community Center) has been collecting holiday cards from neighbors to deliver to Mayor de Blasio in person on Tuesday (Three Kings Day). Find out more details about this here.

Finally, the sidewalk bridge on East 10th Street is celebrating its 17th month with expired permits…
