On the CB3-SLA docket: A new home for Han Dynasty on 3rd Avenue; a Sunflower for 2nd Avenue

Here's a look at two of the applicants who will appear before Community Board 3's SLA committee this evening. (See below for info on watching online — or in person.)

Han Dynasty (Han Dynasty East Village Corp), 98 3rd Ave (op)

Han Dynasty has enjoyed a successful run at 90 Third Ave. between 12th Street and 13th Street for the past 10 years.

The restaurant's ownership is on the agenda tonight (questionnaire here) for a new liquor license for a space several storefronts to the north at 98 Third Ave. — the formal Bar None...
The application on file at the CB3 website doesn't mention whether this is a move or, perhaps, a second location. Ownership did not respond to an email seeking clarification.

We assume the lease is up at 90 Third Ave., and they are moving nearby. (They did something similar at a Han Dynasty in Philadelphia.)

Bar None closed in the spring of 2022 after nearly 17 years in service.
Sunflower East Village (RJM Hospitality LLC), 88 2nd Ave (op)

The NE corner of Second Avenue and Fifth Street will be home to another location of Sunflower, a cafe serving breakfast-brunch on Third Avenue between 25th Street and 26th Street.

The EV location looks to have the same menu/vibe, though with dinner service. Find the questionnaire here. (Note: There will only be a service bar here — no bar seating.)

Sunflower is owned and operated by the same folks as the previous tenant here, Eros, the Greek restaurant that quietly closed in August 2022 when a "temporarily closed" sign arrived on the front door. Eros took over for their diner concept, The Kitchen Sink, in September 2021.

Tonight's meeting starts at 6:30. Find the Zoom link hereThis is a hybrid meeting, and there is limited seating available for the public — the first 15 people who show up at the Community Board 3 Office, 59 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery.

Soft opening action: Somtum Der on Avenue A; Han Dynasty on 3rd Avenue

As we reported on Aug. 1, the Bangkok-based Somtum Der is opening its first U.S. restaurant at 85 Avenue A, home of the former Lantern Thai Kitchen. Somtum Der is currently in soft opening mode...

Fork in the Road had a preview last week:

Thanaruek "Eh" Laoraowirodge has been feeding the people of Bangkok somtum der, a version of green papaya salad that's native to his hometown of Khon Kaen in the northeastern Isan region of Thailand. "Thai people like to eat this kind of food," he explains. "We focused on the authenticity of papaya salad. Most papaya salad in Bangkok adjusted to the Bangkok palate."

[Last week]

Meanwhile, over on Third Avenue at East 12th Street, Han Dynasty is also in soft-open mode... this is the first New York outpost from Han Chiang, the Sichuan master with six restaurants in Philadelphia. A few details on the space via Zagat:

[U]nlike some other hot Asian spots (hello, Mission Chinese) the venue skips a purposely hip decor in favor of a no-frills room.

And!

And about those dishes: the more, the merrier. The menu is affordable, and after we asked for the check, we pulled a "actually, can we see a menu again," and ordered a second round of appetizers and entrees.

Here is Han Dynasty

The plywood is down at Han Dynasty, the first New York outpost from Han Chiang, the Sichuan master with six restaurants in Philadelphia. (And will Han remove the flag from the previous tenant, Montein Thai?)

No word on an opening date here on Third Avenue at East 12th Street, but it looks pretty far along, as this blurry photo of the interior shows...

And there are "coming soon" signs up on the door.

EV Grieve Eatery Etc.: A theater sign for Archie & Sons; Everyman Espresso returns

And here's the sign for Archie & Sons... a 1950s-style luncheonette opening very soon at 23 Third Ave. The original Archie's operated on Long Island for nearly two decades...

And a new sign for the incoming Han Dynasty on Third Avenue near East 12th Street...

Everyman Espresson on East 13th Street closed for a "face lift" back in late June... it reopened yesterday ... in the lobby of the Classic Stage Company.

Han Dynasty says hello on Third Avenue

Over here in Little Philly at 90 Third Ave., Philadelphia-based Sichuan master Han Chiang is bringing his hit restaurant Han Dynasty to the neighborhood as Eater recently noted. Work continues on the space between East 12th Street and East 13th Street (and 99 Miles to Philly) ... and now a sign has arrived to note Han's, uh, arrival.

CB3 approved a beer and wine license for Han Dyansty last month. No word on an opening date.

Renovations begin at incoming Han Dynasty on Third Avenue

The plywood is up now at the long-empty space at 90 Third Ave., most recently home to Montein Thai between East 12th Street and East 13th Street. Eater had the scoop on what's coming soon here: "Philadelphia-based Sichuan master Han Chiang is bringing his hit restaurant Han Dynasty to New York City."

Per Eater: "Chiang has earned a whole lot of praise for his fiery Sichuan cooking in Philadelphia"

(And, oddly enough, only two doors away from 99 Miles to Philly.)

CB3 just gave its approval this month for a beer and wine license for Han Dyansty.
