Free groceries this afternoon at Trinity's Services and Food for the Homeless

In addition to their normal pantry service, Trinity's Services and Food for the Homeless (SAFH) on Ninth Street at Avenue B is providing an additional free food distribution this afternoon.



From 3 to 5 p.m., SAFH will have groceries for 300 families. No registration required.

Trinity's SAFH — at the Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish — has been serving meals to those in need for more than 30 years.

Trinity's Services And Food for the Homeless hosting a summer fundraiser on Thursday

Trinity's Services And Food for the Homeless (SAFH) on Ninth Street at Avenue B is hosting a summer fundraiser this Thursday evening (Aug. 31) to benefit their food pantry and soup kitchen.

According to SAFH officials: "We recently lost a very large grant that was to be given over the next five years. We need to make up the difference."

Per the fundraising invite: "Join us for Happy Hour in our outdoor garden to enjoy the last days of summer and help your community."

Tickets for the event on Thursday evening (5:30-8:30) start at $40. Find more details here.

Refreshments and food for the event will be provided by nearby establishments Maiden Lane, Brix and Barnyard

Trinity's SAFH has been serving meals for more than 30 years. They are open Monday through Friday and serve lunch to between 200-300 people daily during the summer months. They also operate a year-round food pantry.

East Village soup kitchen administrator wins competition on the Food Network's 'Chopped'

This past week, our administrative director, Alex Lawrence, was selected as one of the competitors on Food Network's Chopped.

The episode had a Thanksgiving theme — titled Turkey Day Heroes — featuring employees and volunteers who work with various soup kitchens or feeding programs.

Contestants are asked to make dishes with "mystery ingredients" that are only revealed to them minutes before they begin cooking. Alex was able to make it all the way through to the end, and ended up winning the competition! By working alongside other contestants who have committed themselves to feeding the hungry, Chopped was able to bring to a wide audience the very real challenges and needs that organizations like ours face.

Come rummage at the Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish today

The Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish on East Ninth Street at Avenue B is having a rummage sale today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As a Trinity rep tells us: "We'll have clothes, kitchen and other household items, books, and some furniture."

And what does the money go to?

"Everything we raise this year will be split between our soup kitchen/food pantry program (Trinity's Services And Food for the Homeless) and Lutheran World Relief, specifically to help with relocation and assistance for Syrian Refugees. Last year we were able to raise over $1,000 through sales and donations."

And as the flyer notes, dogs are welcome … in case anyone is coming or going from the annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade today.

The annual Cool Yule raises funds to support SAFH (Trinity's Services and Food for the Homeless) which operates a soup kitchen, community pantry and referral center that serves the homeless population of lower Manhattan.

Your $40 donation includes admission, a terrific open bar and gourmet hors d'oeuvres.

SAFH, located on East Ninth Street and Avenue B, "is a separate non-profit 501(c)3 organization with its own budget and board established to provide emergency food and services to the homeless and low-income residents of New York City. In 2012 we served nearly 200,000 meals.
