La Colombe Coffee Roasters debuts today at the Whole Foods Bowery

The La Colombe Coffee Roasters opens today in the Whole Foods Market® Bowery.

As Eater first reported last month, this is the brand's first New York City roastery.
According to a representative for the company, the new roastery will also offer pastries by Clinton Hill's the Good Batch. Likewise, there will be a new blend made exclusively for this location dubbed the "Bowery Blend" with notes of chocolate, almond butter, and kiwi.

This also marks the ninth NYC location for La Colombe. The listed hours of operation here are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

La Colombe takes over this space on the SW corner of Houston at Chrystie from Allegro Coffee Roasters.

La Colombe taking over the Allegro Coffee Roasters space at Whole Foods Market® Bowery

La Colombe is opening an outpost in the Whole Foods Market® Bowery.

As Eater reports, this will be the brand's first New York City roastery.
According to a representative for the company, the new roastery will also offer pastries by Clinton Hill’s the Good Batch. Likewise, there will be a new blend made exclusively for this location dubbed the “Bowery Blend” with notes of chocolate, almond butter, and kiwi. The space is slated to open in the fall.

This also marks the ninth NYC location for La Colombe.

And this also means that Allegro Coffee Roasters is officially RIP'd. Allegro "temporarily closed" back in the summer. It debuted in July 2017, taking over the space in the SW corner of Houston at Chrystie, where Whole Foods Beer Store (beer store!) was.

Report: East Village resident sues the Whole Foods Market® Bowery and security company over shopping spat

East Village resident Tessa Lena is reportedly suing the Whole Foods Market® Bowery outpost and its security firm after a company guard allegedly accused her of shoplifting and hitting her in the chest.

As the Daily News first reported, Lena is seeking $10 million in damages from Whole Foods, Elite Security Personnel and the unidentified assailant.

The story begins in April 2017 at the grocery on Houston and the Bowery, when the security guard allegedly tackled Lena without any warning and then accused her of stealing a drink that she had purchased elsewhere.

Lena claims in her lawsuit that because the woman didn’t identify herself as a guard and wasn’t wearing any clothes identifying her as one, she had no idea the woman worked for the store.

According to the suit, the woman was “wearing a grungy t-shirt and had the overall appearance not of a security personnel, but of an agitated and disheveled ‘regular person.’”

Lena says she paid for everything she left the store with, but that the woman followed her out and at first implied Lena had gone for the five-finger discount.

After a manager intervened, Lena was eventually cleared to leave. She avoided the store for months before venturing back in this past August, when she saw the security guard on duty.

“I came up to her. I wanted to get her name, and I obviously wanted an apology,” Lena said. “I told her. ‘Look, remember you assaulted me? You owe me an apology for that.’”

That didn't go over well with the guard.

“She was escalating. She was telling me to leave the store, to get out,” Lena recalled. “She was being so rude, so I started filming.”

Once outside, fists flew, and a manager intervened again, admonishing the guard, she said.

The Daily News post includes the video clip.

Lena has been shopping more often at Trader Joe's now, the News noted.

Looking at the Allegro Coffee Roasters, now open at Whole Foods Market® Bowery

The Allegro Coffee Roasters debuted on July 10 at Whole Foods Market® Bowery ... at the corner space on Chrystie and East Houston (where the Beer Store was).

[Top photos from July 10 by Steven]

The Colorado-based, Whole Foods-owned Allegro also has an outpost at the Whole Foods Market® Third & 3rd in Gowanus.

An EVG regular stopped by the other day... and noted the offerings...

Per the Allegro website:

The bright, welcoming interior is a mix of modern and nostalgic features that reflect the classic architecture of the Bowery and Lower East Side. We’ve outfitted the large, open bar with a sleek, custom Nuova Simonelli Black Eagle Espresso machine that is quite the conversation piece, and six nitro taps – three cold brews, two nitro teas and kombucha. Our baristas will be hand brewing and batch brewing small microlot coffees from all over the world.

The reader stood in line a few minutes and left before ordering after the person in front of her asked the barista to describe the hand brews.

Looking at the Allegro Coffee Roasters coming to Whole Foods Market® Bowery

There's a reveal to, uh, reveal over at the Whole Foods Market® Bowery ... where workers have removed the brown paper from the windows at the corner space on Chrystie and East Houston... the previously promised coffee bar (in the spot of the former WF Beer Store) will be an outpost of Allegro Coffee Roasters...

Those stools don't like too comfortable to sit on... in either direction...

Whole Foods Market® Bowery replacing beer with coffee in prime corner spot

Meant to mention this much earlier, given how popular posts about the Whole Foods Market® Bowery are... So, the store has shut down its sizable Beer Room (as of April 17) on the corner of Chrystie and East Houston ... signage points to an incoming Coffee Bar, likely a much better all-day draw than a beer store. (One employee said she thought that the Coffee Bar would be two levels.)

However, WFB isn't done with beer... the sizable suds stock has been moved into the main part of the store... though without any kind of growler service (WFB did away with its homebrew stock in 2013) ...

This is just the latest in WFB enhancements for the 10-year-old store ... including a rebooted bakery and prepared foods region.

There was news yesterday that Albertsons may make a bid to buy Whole Foods.

A quick look at the revamped Whole Foods Market® Bowery and its higher-profile bakery

Back in January, we noted some renovations underway at the Whole Foods Market® Bowery.

Phase 1 of these changes were unveiled last week. For starters, the bakery is now inside the main entrance on East Houston and the Bowery... it looks pretty much like the same stuff that they previously sold in a different location of the store (if any regulars of this place would want to chime in...)

The revamped space includes some seating ... providing for action views of the ongoing East Houston Reconstruction project...

Meanwhile! Back where the bakery stuff used to be ... there's some construction...

The prepared foods section has been revamped... and Whole Foods downsized the salad bar region.

The salad bar stations are down from three to two. During this leisurely morning visit, one had the breakfast food out ... while the other station had the standard salad bar fixings. Missing were the specialty items like cauliflower drowned in tahini and the kale salad surprise. (Surprise! There's feta and Craisins® in here.)

It feels a lot more cramped back here. Can't imagine what it is like during prime lunch/dinner salad bar hours.

More renovations for Whole Foods Market® Bowery

A few weeks ago I noted some renovations underway at the Whole Foods Market® Bowery. For starters, a new bakery is going into the store's northeast corner at the Bowery/Houston entrance.

There are more renovations on the way. In addition to the bakery, parts of the area adjacent to the salad bar region were recently boarded up ... the sign promises more prepared foods...

I recall a sushi station here... and a pizza stand, which is still there... and what else was back here?

Anyway, some Whole Foods Market® Bowery regulars and semi-regulars have noted the 10-year-old store is seeming a little tired these days.

Back in January, the Post went in for a look at the dining area on the second level.

Substance abusers, drug dealers and homeless people are turning the sunny cafe area, where shoppers can dine on pulled pork or Vietnamese sandwiches, into their own private social club for the cost of a cup of coffee or nothing at all.

During five visits to the store in recent weeks, a reporter saw a modern-day Bowery bum sleeping in the fetal position, another nodding out in an obvious drug-induced haze, a few who appeared to be drunk, and one smearing toothpaste on his face and mumbling to himself.

New bakery on the way for the Whole Foods Market® Bowery

Renovations continue at the Whole Foods Market® Bowery ... where there's a temporary entrance to the store on Houston and the Bowery... the reason — the arrival in March of a bakery on the premises...

The current bakery seems rather scattered back by the salad bar region.

Unrelated, avocados are on sale five for $5.

Just in time for Thanksgiving, Whole Foods Market® Bowery is selling the 'table top' trees

The small Christmas and/or holiday trees are here on East Houston at the Bowery. And I didn't think about stopping for a price check. Sorry!

Noted

EVG contributor Derek Berg spotted this new living room ensemble at Whole Foods Market® Bowery ...

The sign asks for people to "treat this furniture as you would your own" this holiday season. How will this turn out???

That's a lot of kale! Thieves take Whole Foods Bowery for 26K, cops say

Three Whole Food Bowery employees transporting $26,000 in a grocery cart to a second-floor office were robbed at gunpoint last night, the Post is reporting.

Per the paper:

A store worker said that the robbery may have been an inside job, noting that a coworker saw the perps leave through the receiving door.

“They ran from the receiving door which no one outside the store knows about,” the worker said. “They know parts of the store that we only know.”

He also said that his co-worker claimed to see one of the men casing the store a few weeks ago wearing the same “dreadlocks and bad, fake beard.”

Updated 10:22
The NYPD is now saying that the thieves got away with $60,000.

Word is spreading late this afternoon that there was a fire inside the Whole Foods Bowery...

Not sure of the cause just yet... There seems to be a lot of confusion about what happened...
