New building construction now in the obscure the Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery storefront phase

Construction is still in the foundation stage for the 9-story office building coming to East Houston between Forsyth and Eldridge at the site of the former Landmark Sunshine Theater.

Meanwhile, workers have gone ahead and put up a sidewalk bridge next door that obscures the neighboring business — the 110-year-old Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery. They’re still here at 137 E. Houston St. for your knish and Cherry Lime Ricky needs — 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone: (212) 477-2858.

Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery temporarily closes

[Photo from August by Stacie Joy]

In case a knish was in your near future. Neighborhood institution Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery, 137 E. Houston St. at Forsyth, is now closed for at least the next week amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Here's part of their message via Instagram yesterday:

Due to concern of possible exposure for our wonderful employees, Yonah Schimmel will be closed from now through Passover, which starts next Wednesday evening. We'll post again when we know our exact reopening date.

In addition, we will not be filling any Goldbelly orders until we reopen. We're very sorry but we have to put the health and well being of everyone first.

Please be safe, follow social spacing suggestions and together we'll get through this unbelievable time as best we can.

A visit to Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery

For her latest "A visit to" post, EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by a local business that doesn't need much introduction — Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery.

The business, which Yonah Schimmel, a Romanian immigrant, started as a knish pushcart in Coney Island sometime in the 1890s, has been at 137 E. Houston St. at Forsyth since 1910. And the knishery has retained much of its charm — there's the tin ceiling, red flooring, operating dumbwaiter and overall time-warp vibe.

Ellen Anistratov runs Yonah Schimmel with her two sons, David (in yellow baseball cap) and Joseph (in the white cap). Ellen Anistratov, a fourth-generation relative of Yonah Schimmel, recently told NY1's Roger Clark that they hope to be here for another 100 years... take a look around...

Yonah Schimmel's Knish Bakery is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can find them on Instagram here.

An appreciation: Yonah Schimmel's dumbwaiter

Stopped by Yonah Schimmel on Houston the other day... always a pleasure...

The dumbwaiter has been in operation for more than 100 years...

How many other dumbwaiters are still in use in NYC bars/restaurants? Old Town has the oldest in operation... Are there others?

Oscar winners film TV commercial in Yonah Schimmel, Katz's

A reader came across this scene earlier this week at Yonah Schimmel Knishery on Houston ... a crew was on the scene filming a commercial. After a little digging, it turns out this is a high-powered crew — Tom ("The King's Speech") Hooper on the left and Guillermo ("Pan's Labyrinth") Navarro on the right. They were also filming a scene at Katz's ... it's for a credit card commercial...
