Openings: Matto Espresso on 3rd Avenue

An outpost of Matto Espresso has opened at 110 Third Ave. between 13th Street and 14th Street.

This is (surprisingly!) the first East Village location for the brand that has more than 30 cafes in NYC.

The discount coffee chain offers all items, from coffee to pastries, for $2.50 — if you order via its app... otherwise it's $3.50 if you order at the counter...
The small retail space was previously Isaac Gabai Salon, which moved seven blocks to the north on Third Avenue.

Yay! This is awesome. Welcome to our hood.

I've frequented their other location in the west village near NYU for years. Their brownies and cookies are a delight. Polite and kind service too. And inexpensive being the operative word, which should offer their competitors a run for their money, especially in this terrible economy and a joke of a job market. I can get behind $2.50 :)

Any idea why ordering through an app gets you a dollar discount? I've seen the same thing with fast food places, use their app & get deals/discounts.

They get your data and track your purchase trends more easily which supports ad campaigns.

@ 9:48 - Normally it's to get a customer into the habit of using their app, where they can push promos, track orders, and generally see a higher rate of customer loyalty.

Order-aheads can also sometimes (when done right) help with prep efficiency, although if you go to a midtown fast casual restaurant around lunchtime on a weekday you'll see this put into question!

Totalitarian service. Their uptown outposts used to be $2 for each item and no surveillance. They brew a very strong and long espresso, I'd still pay the extra 50 cents but not $1.50.
