This month, the Lower East Side Ecology Center is launching "The Coolest Block in the Lower East Side" (and NOT a Magnetic Fields song), billed as "an exciting new initiative designed to encourage community stewardship of street trees in the East Village, Lower East Side and Chinatown neighborhoods.''

... this community-driven contest fosters environmental awareness, local engagement, and a healthy dose of competition, bringing together neighbors, schools, and organizations to transform their blocks into vibrant, green spaces.Residents, community groups, block associations, schools, and local organizations are invited to compete for the title of the Coolest Block in the Lower East Side. Participants will focus on key street tree care activities such as soil aeration, mulching, watering, and general cleanup, all while showcasing creativity and community spirit.

Our block was the greenest block in the EV but dog owners turned our tree wells into doggy toilets and killed the flowers we planted. Someone when as far as cutting away barriers to allow their dogs entry.
I live on Poo Alley. So, no, I don’t think we have what it takes.
The struggle is real.
Our block has 3 community gardens, one fairly sized playground and is bordered by grammar schools east and west. Plus we have a lot of dogs so we’re out of contention.
I made two separate signs to discourage dog owners from using our flowering tree as a toilet. Both were ripped down.
I block I live on is just a bunch of noisy bars so I guess we lost
Oh, lots of naughty dog parents! I’m on 11th st and First, the DoorDash corner, so infinitely ineligible for countless reasons.
Happy to help but it is NYC GOV's job to take care of the remaining trees in this neighborhood. Also I am tired of seeing trucks slamming into trees and dogs shitting on tree wells.
