Metro Acres Market is hosting a grand-opening party today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the SW corner of First Avenue at Fifth Street. (You may have noticed the flags.)
There will be giveaways too, like flat-screen TVs, microwaves and air fryers, per ownership ... whom we caught up with the other day...
According to management, the new grocery will feature a deli counter, salad bar and a chef-driven hot buffet with a rotating selection of prepared foods. The store will also include a "Fresh to Go" section with handmade and grab-and-go items, as well as a full-service meat department.
Metro Acres says the prepared foods and other offerings will be made fresh daily on the premises.
Here's a look inside, as of yesterday afternoon... (with a promising vegetarian section)...
The Rite Aid at this corner closed last August.

Can you elaborate with specifics of what you found expensive and what you pay for the same items elsewhere?

I live across the street from this store and the lights on the top of the store and in front of the store kept on all night are brutally and blindingly bright -they look horrible and make the area in front of the store look horrible. I can't bare looking out across at the street anymore and it's hard to sleep with them on. Why is this allowed?
In response to the following 2 posts, thank you for being proactive. I will get the specs of what was found to be expensive, etc. I understand about the inflation aspect.

I brought this up when I stopped by to welcome them to the block. They apologized and said they'd dim the lights. I imagine it might take some time to replace the bulbs/adjust fixtures/timing. It seems like they want to be good neighbors; let's hope they remedy this.
My response was to the anonymous commenter who said EXPENSIVE. I'm asking the commenter for the same info as you!
I will try this spot out and see if it comes in cheaper and fresher than Ye Olde Key Foods.
Nice to have another option in the neighborhood, which was once starved for grocery stores but now there are certainly a lot of options. I hope the food quality of the prepared meals is good, that's really all I want.
I went shopping today at Metro acres and although everybody’s definition of expensive is different as a shopper of both Whole Foods and key food I found Metro acres to have completely competitive prices that r aligned with both Whole Foods and Key Food!
Also, please take advantage of the special prices from March 14 through March 21 for example jumbo dozen eggs is $2.49. You can also get sunshine extra large eggs, three dozen for $5 certainly would help a family!
Tropicana juice two for $6, Daisy cottage cheese 3 for $5. 1/2 a gallon of milk $2.99
There are so many sales again please take advantage of them and give this place a chance because in my opinion from what I saw and as a shopper in the East village, I had a wonderful experience! By the way, the staff is extremely friendly, extremely helpful and very welcoming!

By the way, they offer a 10% discount to all seniors over 65 they must show their ID at the register. This is seven days a week!! No points necessary!! take advantage of this seniors! how helpful is that especially when you’re on a fixed budget yay.!

I dropped by the other day and was surprised by the high prices. I had the impression the prices were higher than Whole Foods. I mean at least Whole Foods' fruit and vegetables are organic. It seems they didn't do their research and check the competition. Bad start.
I'm really interested in the meat counter/butcher. I don't want to shop at Whole Foods, so hoping for good meats at this location
I tend to judge places by their milk to see where they're at... either Horizon or Organic Valley... and the Horizon milk there was $9.50 - which is very expensive for Horizon. Yes it's more premium than bog standard milk but it also tends to have really good expiration windows as it's ultra pasteurized.
I'm sure some stuff here will be cheaper ... but at least on this one metric, it's $$.
Best of luck to them, I'll get over there eventually. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

I can bring my pooch into KeyFoo, 24/7. It's the only reason I shop there. I prefer Shop Fair.
Will MetroAcres allow dogs?
It is a health code violation to allow dogs into a grocery store. Asking the store to let you bring in your dog (assuming you are asking first instead of just waiting for someone to tell you your dog is not allowed) puts the store employees in the position to either turndown a customer's request, or risk getting health code violations.
Unless you have a service animal, in which case an establishment must allow them (emotional support animals are not legally considered service animals).
While I have been guilty of taking my dog into stores/bodegas in the past to just jump in a grab something...I would recommend not doing it, especially regularly. It's super unfair to the store to put them in that position.
Most stores... in fact all stores I've been in... don't enforce the law. What I do is not buy anything on lower shelves. I've seen dogs casually licking, sniffing product on the lower shelves while their owners shop.
that is true - but stores are put in a bad place. Many dog owners walk in very confidently with their dog and are not looking to do anything besides shop. Trader Joe's is an example that puts up explicit signs saying dogs are not allowed but dog owners walk right past. This puts the onus on the store employees to kick the otherwise pleasant, courteous, and paying customer out of the store. Or take the risk of an inspector coming by and charging them. Coffee shops also are put in this position every day (Smor also has an explicit sign, but dog owners walk past it).
