Police search Most Holy Redeemer after reported break-in

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Updated Sept. 5 here.

------

Police searched Most Holy Redeemer Church for about two hours early this evening after a witness reported seeing a man force his way inside the closed building at 173 E. Third St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.
The witness who called 911 described the suspect as a tall, thin, white male. He reportedly jumped the fence, broke open the church doors and entered the building before 4:30 p.m.

The block was roped off as Emergency Service Unit officers, Strategic Response Group members, multiple K-9 units and other law enforcement personnel responded.

Some officers carried shields and long guns while teams searched the building.
The size of the response alarmed onlookers.

Officers repeatedly told people at the scene that there was no bomb threat. It was not immediately clear what prompted such an extensive response.

Police called off the search around 6:30 p.m. without finding the man.

Some at the scene speculated that he had left before officers arrived, though this was not confirmed.
Police sources confirmed that the man damaged the doors.
Photos from the scene also show a broken window. It was not immediately known whether anything had been taken or if there was additional damage inside.
The break-in occurred two days after neighbors, former parishioners and preservationists gathered outside the church to call for its preservation and reopening after a year-long closure.

All that cause someone saw someone go in the church? That’s insane. We thought there was an active shooter or some shit.

What was with the SWAT team and all the heavy weapons? It was probably just a burglar looking for something to steal and sell for money. I think that this was a little overkill by the NYPD on their response to a minor crime.

How would you know what that person had on? There are countless amount of churches being burned in the US right now and this wouldn't be far fetched to think either. So yes, this was the best way to approach it. That is a historical building and unfortunately there are evil individuals that are burning these Catholic & Christian Churches

Oh for Christ’s sake!

20/20 hindsight that it seems like it was “no big deal.” It’s a vacant building with lots of places to hide. The police response followed protocol. Nice work NYPD

Considering the political climate with church and synagogue shootings, fires and bombings I am comforted to see the response of the NYPD..Glad there was only minimal damage. There are many old and sacred items in the church that could have easily been stolen and a fire inside the cavernous building could have easily spread before bing noticed

Thank you for letting us all know.

Arson should definitely be guarded against. Good point.

With the number of “mysterious” fires being set in churches recently, we need to keep a close eye on all of them.

Exactly. I commented basically the same thing before I saw your comment.

Who is burning churches?? What are you talking about??

Is that what you think? With all the crimes and arson and violence on an unprecedented increase, I think the NYPD were more than appropriate.

Clearly people haven’t seen churches being firebombed in and around NYC. A guy in a black ninja suit jumped the fence and ran in. They knew the super left - clearly had been casing. Huge thank you to the ninth precinct - this is the right response.

This isn’t a minor crime. Churches have been firebombed in NYC, Queens etc every month or so. Every reason to believe this guy could’ve used a gun or a bomb.

For those saying this response was over the top. There have been a series of churches being firebombed in NYC, Queens, Brooklyn this year. Even if you don’t care about the church a fire can take out several buildings on the block. The guy JUMPED the fence in a black mask/ninja suit right after the super left. This was clearly planned. A rando guy wouldn’t know how to get out of there quickly - probably he’s got some idea of the layout. There have been attacks on churches & synagogs including shootings & bombings. I prefer my neighbors not be harmed. Finally, this church has huge historic value, physically & spiritually. It is, quite literally irreplaceable. Thank you to the Ninth Precinct for everything you did today. I’m deeply grateful.

There’ve been lots of attacks on churches & other houses of worship in the last 18 months. A fire would take out other apartment buildings. Jumping a fence & breaking a door w a black ski mask on isn’t minor.

What countless amount? Would you count that for us please?

Get ready for some "mysterious" Catholic lightning. The Archidocese wants to get rid of this beautiful church.

This right here... Ppl think just cause they stand one political side... It's totally normal for churches to be burned "randomly". This isn't right and should be a wake up call to what is happening in NYC and The US.
