These East Village institutions are now currently closed

After a to-go sandwich service on St. Patrick's Day, McSorley's is now closed over at 15 E. Seventh St. for the duration of the coronavirus outbreak ...

Meanwhile, Veselka, 144 Second Ave. at Ninth Street, decided to shut down operations starting yesterday. Here's part of their Instagram post:

Veselka has closed indefinitely. That was not a fun decision to make, but it was an easy one. The safety of our staff and customers comes first.

Rest assured that we’ll be back! We may be suspending operations before some other places, but we’ll start boiling the borscht as soon as the scientists and regulators give us the all-clear.

And B&H, 127 Second Ave., is also closed now. Tuesday was their last day, in which they were giving out some menu items.

Their future seems less clear, and there is now a crowdfunding campaign in place to help them in the interim.

B&H Dairy celebrates its 80th anniversary tonight

Tonight, B&H Dairy owners Ola and Fawzy Abdelwahed (pictured above) and their many longtime staffers are celebrating the lunch counter's 80th year in business here on Second Avenue between Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place. (Read details about the celebration here.)

Ahead of that, EVG correspondent Stacie Joy stopped by (during a less-busy time on a recent weekday) to document the cozy atmosphere of the B&H ...

Here's part of New York magazine's recap of the kosher dairy restaurant:

Midweek is more Hopperesque, the profiles of solo diners washed in the sallow glow of the diner’s hanging milk-colored lights. No matter when you step up to the counter, a double stack of sweet-soft challah, schmeared with butter and served on a small Dixie plate, accompanies every order.

Tina Barth has been a regular at B&H since 1965...

Here's a condensed version of B&H's history via Facebook:

It was opened in 1938 by Abie Bergson and Sol Hausman (B&H) and the interior and menu has changed little since. In 1970, Bergson & Hausman sold the restaurant, which since has had two subsequent owners before being purchased May 1, 2003 by Fawzy Abdelwahed, who runs B&H with his wife Ola, who he met when she worked at the Stage Diner (now closed), across the street. (She cleaned his glasses one day, and that was it!)

[Updated] A grand reopening at B&H Dairy

After nearly five months, B&H Dairy reopened this morning ... and there was a line of people waiting for one of the 76-year-old lunch counter's handful of seats...

East Village resident Elinor Nauen was among the first to arrive... waiting up the block...

The diner was set to start serving again at 9 a.m., though it was actually 9:27 before the doors opened, EVG contributor Berg noted.

Here's a look inside...

B&H remained closed after the deadly gas explosion that leveled three buildings on March 26. Owners Fawzy Abdelwahed and Ola Smigielsk faced multiple hurdles (we documented this here) to get the diner back open here between East Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place.

Per NY1:

With the darkest days behind them, Abdelwahed is now relieved that his wife didn't listen to him several months ago when he was ready to give up.

"Since this happened, I explain to her, 'Let's go look for another job,'" he said. "She said, 'No way. This is our dream and we're going to fight for it.'"

B&H is expected to be back to its usual 7 a.m. opening time tomorrow.

An opening date is within sight at B&H Dairy

[EVG photo from Saturday]

Some very good news yesterday for B&H Dairy, the 73-year-old diner that has been closed since the deadly Second Avenue gas explosion on March 26.

After a number of unexpected setbacks and upgrades and inspection bureaucracy, the Department of Buildings approved all the recent work yesterday here at 127 Second Ave. between East Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place.

Next steps? From the B&H Facebook page:

Gas should be turned on early [this coming] week and then they stock and get cooking. We will announce an opening date soon – could be as soon as a week.

And here is the reaction from owners Fawzy Abdelwahed and Ola Smigielsk upon passing the inspection …

Meanwhile, a crowdfunding campaign continues for B&H. The current fundraiser is to help pay for the new exhaust system, a gas line upgrade, three months of employee wages, rent, taxes, utilities as well as food to stock the restaurant kitchen. You can find more details here at YouCaring.

Progress and frustration at B&H Dairy

[B&H in happier days by Ken Goldstein via Facebook]

B&H Dairy has remained shuttered since the deadly Second Avenue gas explosion on March 26.

The 73-year-old lunch counter at 127 Second Ave. between East Seventh Street and St. Mark's Place was close to reopening several times this spring, only to encounter an unexpected setback, such as in early May when the FDNY said that B&H needed a new fire suppression system. (Safety requirements from the city have become stricter since March 26.)

This upgrade, expected to cost $28,000, has kept the small restaurant from opening these past two months. The upgrade is also looking like the major factor that could permanently close B&H.

For starters, owners Fawzy Abdelwahed and Ola Smigielsk needed approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission (the building is in the East Village/Lower East Side Historic District) to install the new fire suppression system. The LPC approval finally came through last week. And as of Wednesday, the DOB had issued the necessary permit for the job. Work starts on Monday. (The contractor needed to be first approved by the FDNY.)

Now it looks like another few weeks before B&H can possibly reopen. "Another few weeks" is something that Abdelwahed has heard all too often in recent months. Meanwhile, other nearby restaurants were able to reopen fairly quickly after the explosion.

We spoke with Abdelwahed on the phone this week. He was understandably frustrated.

"I have bills to pay. What am I going to do? Where am I going to get assistance from? I just need to open the restaurant — simple," said Abdelwahed, who estimates that his monthly costs are $30,000, which includes rent, taxes and labor costs. (B&H successfully raised $26,000 in a crowdfunding campaign back in April.)

How about the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which promised financial assistance to residents and businesses impacted by the Second Avenue explosion?

"They promised to give people money who have been affected by the explosion, but this has never happened," he said. "I've never heard from them."

However, he expressed his gratitude to Bernadette Nation from the Small Business Services agency (a mayoral agency), who has lately been advocating on B&H's behalf along with Community Board 3 officials. And there are the B&H faithful. "We have very big support from our customers," he said. "Since being closed the only people who care about us are our customers."

While there is progress to report, B&H still has a labyrinth of red tape to navigate before reopening. For example, after the contractor finishes the work, the FDNY must approve the new system, then ConEd has to approve the building's new gas lines (already installed). Once B&H gets final approval by all involved parties, the Department of Health steps in for an inspection before the restaurant is permitted to serve food again. (B&H had an A rating before.)

And if there is another setback, what will that do to B&H's chances of reopening?

“As each day goes by, I cannot pay the rent if we are closed. Two more weeks and I cannot afford it anymore," he said. "Two more weeks and I’m done. That’s it."

For his part, Abdelwahed just wants to get back to work.

“I miss the whole operation. I miss my customers. I miss seeing them. They are my friends — I know them by name. I miss serving people every day. I miss my job every day," he said, "I get up every day and I don’t know what to do. It is a very bad feeling."

Another setback for B&H's return on 2nd Avenue

[Photo last week by Derek Berg]

B&H Dairy owners Fawzy and Ola Abdelwahed hoped to have their small lunch counter at 127 Second Ave. back open by now … and they were apparently a few inspections away from reopening.

However, this past Saturday during an inspection, the FDNY said that the B&H needs a new fire suppression system … which will push the opening back at least three weeks.

Fawzy and Ola have now taken to Kiva Zip, a crowdlending site for small-business loans to raise $10,000. The loan will go to repairs and renovations, employee salary and groceries when it is time for reopening.

On Kiva Zip, Ola writes that their 12-year-old son "is already looking forward to helping us, which makes me so happy! Maybe in the future he can continue the work like his parents, and continue to be the proud owner of B&H like his parents."

B&H, between St. Mark's Place and East Seventh Street, has been closed since the deadly gas explosion on March 26.

B&H Dairy is close to reopening

[EVG photo from April]

Here's the latest Facebook message from B&H Dairy via their Facebook page this afternoon:

Hello to B&H customers and friends. We are very close to reopening, but still dealing with city permits to do the repairs and upgrades required to open. The office of Councilwoman Rosie Mendez has been helpful.

Just this morning we picked up the permit from the Landmarks Preservation Commission office to allow our plumber to connect the gas. We are waiting for the plumber to return our call. Once the plumber connects the gas we will need to be inspected by ConEd and the DOB. Once they say OK, we can open!

Our customers are like our family. Thank you all for you support over the last month! Watch our Facebook page for the reopening date.

1 more week before the beloved B&H Dairy can reopen on 2nd Avenue

Unfortunately, it has been slow going for the lunch counter to reopen at 127 Second Ave. since the deadly gas explosion on March 26.

Gas service was restored a few weeks ago. Now, in a Facebook post, owner Fawzy Abdelwahad says they need another week to repair the ceiling for safety reasons. (Apparently city inspectors were at the diner yesterday.)

In a separate post he wrote: "Meeting for business still one more week so sad."

A good sign outside B&H Dairy?

EVG contributor Derek Berg spotted a delivery this morning hanging outside B&H Diary at 127 Second Ave. ...

The 73-year-old lunch counter has been closed since the deadly explosion several storefronts away on March 26.

B&H Dairy owner Fawzy Abelwahed told the Times of Israel that the restaurant needed to have new gas pipes installed. He said that he was waiting for a final inspection of the new gas pipes scheduled for today.

"Hopefully we can reopen after that," he said.

To date, supporters have donated $18,225 toward the $20,000 goal of a crowdfunding campaign posted on Smallknot.
