Former Birdbath space finally for rent on 3rd Avenue

Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery over at Third Avenue at East Ninth Street abruptly closed back in July.

Now the for rent signs have finally gone up here in the base of NYU's Alumni Hall … the listing hasn't appeared online just yet, though.

Meanwhile, the former Citi Habitats office next door remains on the market for an undisclosed sum…

The listing shows this rendering… a restaurant called Pierre…

As for Birdbath, they are opening a new location on Spring Street, BoweryBoogie reported back on Nov. 11.

Coming and going on 3rd Avenue

OK, let's see … as noted back in July, a GNC is taking over the former East Hardware space at 79 Third Ave. The GNC sign arrived a few weeks ago. More recently, the signage went up next door at East 11th Street for Heavenly Market & Deli.

And in other NYU dorm storefront news … Citi Habitats moved out of 37 Third Ave. maybe at the end of June (don't think we ever noted it…) … the space remains on the market for an undisclosed sum. (The listing notes no bars or businesses to compete with its neighbors, like Subway and Saint's Alp Teahouse.) And next door at East Ninth Street, the brown paper now covers the gutted Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery space.

Birdbath Bakery has apparently closed for good

As we noted earlier last month, Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery over at Third Avenue at East Ninth Street randomly closed. No sign to note a closure, temporary or otherwise.

And even though Birdbath removed this location from their website, workers at the main location told us that this closure was just for the slow summer period. Which makes no sense given the rents. But OK!

Meanwhile, last week, a crew gutted the shop.

The bakery opened here in May 2011. The location on First Avenue near East 13th Street closed in March 2013.

Birdbath Bakery remains closed, though it may only be temporary

As we noted last Monday, The Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery on Third Avenue at East Ninth Street hasn't been open of late.

Another week passed here without any sign of activity. And the address no longer appears on its parent City Bakery's website.

However, a representative for City Bakery told Eater the shutter is only temporary.

If this is the case (and we like the food here, so …), then why not put up a sign noting a temporary closure? The only recent sign is the one comically announcing new summer hours.

We walked by every day last week. And on each occasion, at least one other person would attempt to enter the business. Why not tell your loyal customers that you'll be back?

Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery on 3rd Avenue has not been open lately

The Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery over at Third Avenue at East Ninth Street has not been open for at least a week … there's no sign on the door noting any temporary (or permanent) closure …

Birdbath, an eco-friendly spinoff of City Bakery, was closed for several days in February without any explanation until a sign arrived about a broken door.

As for now… calls to the location are kicked over to a generic voice-mail greeting … and the address is no longer mentioned on the City Bakery website ….

We reached out to City Bakery for more information about this location's status.

The bakery opened here in May 2011. The location on First Avenue near East 13th Street closed in March 2013.

Birdbath Bakery back in business with new door

Birdbath Bakery reopened yesterday after being dark for the past week or so.

The bakery on Third Avenue and NYU East Ninth Street had been closed because of a broken front door. A reader, who took this photo, said they were back in business as of yesterday.

[Updated] Why Birdbath Bakery has been closed of late

A reader shared this Friday about Birdbath Bakery over at Third Avenue and NYU:

The Birdbath Bakery at 3rd Avenue and 9th Street appears to have closed. There are no signs indicating what has happened, but the store has been locked, dark and empty each day this week.

Hmm… the location on First Avenue near East 13th Street closed last March… so…

However! There is now a sign up explaining the situation on Third Avenue… Looks like a broken door has been the culprit...

Updated 2/6

Birdbath reopened today.

Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery closes on First Avenue

Well. This morning, EVG reader @david_fitz sent along the above photo, showing a "for rent" sign on the Birdbath Bakery location on First Avenue between East 13th Street and East 14th Street... everything was cleared out yesterday, he noted.

The eco-friendly Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery is the little sister of City Bakery, as they put it on their website.

They had five locations, including the one that opened in May 2011 on Third Avenue and East Ninth Street.

Anyway, can we blame the new Starbucks on First Avenue and East 13th Street for his closure?

Birdbath Bakery now open on Third Avenue

As Eater noted, the fifth location of Birdbath Bakery, a spinoff of City Bakery, opened yesterday on Third Avenue at NYU. Among other things, they'll serve Kombucha on tap. And we hope that no one decides to detoxify the body right there on the corner... Jeremiah noted the Birdbathers impending arrival back in October.
