Brick Lane Curry House announces itself with fiery red awning at new 2nd Avenue location

Work continues at 79 Second Ave. between Fourth Street and Fifth Street, where the new location of Brick Lane Curry House will be opening later this fall.

The new awning just arrived, looking as hot as its phaal dish. As Eater noted, the British-style curry is made with tomato, ginger and at least 10-12 ground whole chillies. (Eat it and get into the Phaal Hall of Fame.)

The restaurant left its space one block to the north at the end of August.

As previously noted, this marks Brick Lane's third East Village location. They moved from Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. in August 2014.

Calexico, which serves Cal-Mex food in several NYC locations, is expected to open an outpost at 99 Second Ave.

Thanks to Lola Sáenz for the photo!

Brick Lane Curry House closes ahead of move down the block

Brick Lane Curry House closed after service last Thursday here at 99 Second Ave. between Fifth Street and Sixth Street... and workers quickly cleaned out the space...

The restaurant confirmed on Facebook that they are moving one block to the south — 79 Second Ave., the former Heart of India space. No word on a reopening date just yet.

This marks Brick Lane's third East Village location. They moved from Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. in August 2014.

As for No. 99, the owners of Calexico, the Cal-Mex burrito-beer chainlet, were on last month's CB3-SLA agenda for a liquor license for this address.

Calexico currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain.

Brothers Brian, Dave, and Jesse Vendley are on tonight's CB3-SLA agenda for a new liquor license for No. 99, which is between Fifth Street and Sixth Street...

The questionnaire posted to the CB3 website (PDF here) shows proposed hours of 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. The layout features 15 tables inside and six tables for a sidewalk cafe ... plus a 14-seat bar.

Calexico currently has a handful of NYC locations (Upper East Side, Greenpoint, Park Slope, Red Hook, among them) as well as in Detroit — and Bahrain.

As for Brick Lane Curry House... there is an unconfirmed rumor on the block that they will relocate a block to the south... to the former Heart of India storefront...

Brick Lane Curry House made the move from Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. in August 2014.

The August CB3-SLA meeting is tonight at 6:30 in the Perseverance House Community Room, 535 E. Fifth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

[Updated] The State of New York seizes Brick Lane Curry House on 2nd Avenue

EVG contributor Derek Berg shares these photos this morning ... showing that State has seized the restaurant here at 99 Second Ave. between Fifth Street and Sixth Street for nonpayment of taxes ...

In March 2016, the State seized the other two Brick Curry locations in the city, in Midtown and the Upper East Side.

According to Eater, Brick Lane owner Sati Sharma owed nearly $350,000 in unpaid taxes "when combing all four of his NYC restaurants, including the locations of Brick Lane Curry House and an Italian restaurant in Midtown called Radicchio Pasta and Risotto, which has been closed since at least January [2016]."

The "vast majority" of owed cash at that time was from unpaid sales tax, per a spokesperson for the Department of Tax and Finance.

The Second Avenue location is the last of the Brick Lane empire in the city.

Brick Lane moved to Second Avenue from Sixth Street in 2014.

Updated 9/21

The tax issues have apparently been taken care of... Brick Lane is back open today...

Brick Lane Curry House has relocated to 2nd Avenue

This weekend, Brick Lane Curry House made the move from East Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. between East Sixth Street and East Fifth Street.

This move had been in the making for more than three years. No word on what will happen with the East Sixth Street space.

Thanks to EVG reader Vinny for the tip!

New Brick Lane Curry House space (finally) shaping up

[EVG file photo]

More than three years has passed since we heard that Brick Lane Curry House was going to relocate from East Sixth Street to 99 Second Ave. between East Sixth Street and East Fifth Street.

Workers recently removed the graffiti/poster-attracting plywood on Second Avenue …

… which now provides a look inside at the renovation progress…

No word on the actual relocation. Back on April 21, Fork in the Road reported that the move would likely happen in three to four weeks … looks like the Brick Lane folks have a little ways to go.

Previously, the address was home to Sea Salt, the short-lived fish place that remained intact for several years after closing.

At long last, Brick Lane Curry relocating to Second Avenue

[EVG file photo]

It was almost exactly three years ago that we heard that Brick Lane Curry was going to relocate to 99 Second Ave. between East Sixth Street and East Fifth Street.

Via a sign in the bathroom (!!!) at the East Sixth Street location, Fork in the Road learned that the move will take place in the next three to four weeks.

Per FITR: "The curries and tandoor oven will make the move, too — and you'll still be able to get phaal, one of the hottest dishes in the city."

And this Second Avenue space is huge at 7,000-square-feet and three levels.

Previously, the address was home to Sea Salt, the short-lived fish place that remained intact for several years after closing.

Clearing the way for Brick Lane Curry on Second Avenue

Two-plus years ago Brick Lane Curry announced that they'd open a location at 99 Second Ave. near East Sixth St. ... the site of a long-dormant restaurant space (Remember Sea Salt?) ... EVG reader Ted E. notes that there's trash-removal activity there today... CB3 OK'd a full liquor license for Brick Lane last month.

July CB3/SLA highlights: Holiday Lounge, Brick Lane Curry and more tacos

[99 Second Ave. from August 2012]

The July CB3/SLA docket is now out... We'll look at the whole thing later... but a few quick highlights... (The meeting is July 15.)

• 117 Ave A Food & Drink LLC, 117 Ave A (op)

The mystery applicant looking to take over the Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A is back on the agenda.

Sidewalk Cafe Application (unenclosed)
• Mighty Quinn's Barbeque (CMH BBQ Holdings LLC), 103 2nd Ave

• Brazen Fox Kitchen and Bar (106 3rd Ave NYC Inc), 106 3rd Ave

The folks from the White Plains-based bar The Brazen Fox are opening a bar-restaurant in the former Friend House space at East 13th Street ... the space is still under construction and they are already seeking a license for a sidewalk cafe. Very Brazen!

• Boulton & Watt (Downtown Dining LLC), 5 Ave A

New Liquor License Applications
• Holiday Lounge (75 St Marks Place LLC), 75 St Marks Pl (op)

Barbara Sibley, the owner of La Palapa next door here on St. Mark's Place, will be opening a bar-restaurant in the former Holiday Cocktail Lounge space... we're looking forward to the end results of the work... She told Grub Street last year that "We're going to try to preserve as much of the history as possible."

Otto's Taco LLC, 141 2nd Ave (b)

Ah! Last week, contractors told EVG regular William Klayer that a "taco place" was opening at the former Good Guys, the burger-fries-salad-wraps-waffles-smoothie eatery that replaced a Subway on Second Avenue. Good Guys closed a few weeks ago.

• Bricklane Curry House (BLCH I LLC), 99 2nd Ave (op)

Looks as if there's finally activity here ... most recently home to Sea Salt, the upscale fish eatery that closed in early 2008 after a seven-month stint... Brick Lane announced in April 2011 that they'd be taking over the space ...

Brick Lane Curry House still planning Second Avenue expansion

Back in April 2011, Steve Cuozzo at the Post reported that reps for Brick Lane Curry House had signed a lease for a 7,000-square-feet, three-level outpost on Second Avenue in the East Village...

Turned out that the space was for 99 Second Ave., most recently home to Sea Salt, the upscale fish eatery that closed in early 2008 after a seven-month stint...

[2011]

Anyway, we bring this up because... have you seen the shape of No. 99 these days...? Been awfully quiet there... and collecting an array of tags, flyers and what not...

However, Vivek at Brick Lane told us that they will be moving here... they're currently focusing on the new location on Third Avenue and East 93rd Street... which is expected to open in three weeks...

"Once that is done, we will focus on 99 Second Ave."
