Day 1 of the Cookie Walk

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

Day 1 of the 2025 Cookie Walk unfolded yesterday at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

The annual neighborhood tradition brought a steady stream of visitors down to the church basement, where long tables were packed with dozens of homemade cookies and desserts.

As always, the setup was straightforward: grab one of the provided boxes (or three) and circle the cookie-lined tables, filling them with your favorites along the way.

This year's Cookie Walk carries added significance. St. Nicholas recently marked its 100th Anniversary Jubilee, and the parish is celebrating the milestone with 100 varieties of cookies, while keeping the event's familiar, low-key format intact.

New for 2025, the parish has also created a children's storybook inspired by the Cookie Walk, a tale that begins and ends in the East Village, with a few stops in Manhattan in between.

Day 2 continues today, from noon to 3 p.m. — or until everything is gone.

Here are a few scenes, starting with Cookie Walk organizer and storybook author Kim Busel (right) and storybook illustrator Tiffany Canjura...

Cookie Walk returns — with a centennial twist

Photos by Stacie Joy

Signage is up for the 2025 edition of The Cookie Walk, the annual neighborhood tradition that brings dozens of varieties of homemade cookies and desserts to St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

This year's event takes place in the church basement on Dec. 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Dec. 14 from noon to 3 p.m. (or until everything's gone).

As always, the setup is simple: grab one of the provided boxes (or two) and make your way around the cookie-lined tables, choosing your favorites as you go.

This year's Walk has added significance. St. Nicholas recently celebrated its 100th Anniversary Jubilee, and the parish is marking the milestone with 100 varieties of cookies, keeping the tradition's familiar format intact.

They've also created a children's storybook about the Cookie Walk that begins and ends in the East Village, with a few stops in Manhattan along the way.

More details to come as we get closer to the big weekend.

At Day 1 of the Cookie Walk

Photos and reporting by Stacie Joy

The 2024 edition of the Cookie Walk is underway this weekend at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

Yesterday kicked off the event, offering one spot in the East Village where lines and Santas were anything but annoying. (And don't be turned off by the line: It moves quickly.)
We saw Rev. Father William (Bennett) and longtime event organizer Kim Busel at the event...
This year's theme is "international cookies," with over 80 varieties. (The church's 100th anniversary is next year, and they hope to have 100 cookie types available.)

In addition to cookies, the event features a holiday gift market, a craft station for kids, a photo station with Santa and his elves, a cocoa bar with an array of toppings, and a gift wrap section for packaging your cookie boxes.

Here's a look around...
The Cookie Walk is back in action today, with posted hours of noon to 3 p.m. (you may want to get there closer to the start time).

You can follow the Cookie Walk on Instagram here.

The 2022 Cookie Walk has been canceled

Photo from 2019 by Stacie Joy

Organizers have decided not to host a Cookie Walk again this year at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

The Cookie Walk website shows that this year's event, expected to occur early next month, has been canceled.

"Our hearts are broken to make this announcement," per the site...
There wasn't an official reason given for the cancellation of what would have been the 12th Cookie Walk.
We will wait until 2023 when we can all enjoy the excitement and fun of "walking The Walk" together once again.

Be well. Stay safe. Eat Cookies!
The always-festive event, held in early December in the church basement, offers about 75 varieties of homemade cookies and pastries. As the name implies, you take a walk around cookie-filled tables and pick your favorites.

There won't be a Cookie Walk this Christmas

Organizers have decided not to host a Cookie Walk again this year at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

Although there wasn't an official reason given for the cancellation, concerns over COVID-19 certainly played a role in this decision. According to an Instagram post from Friday:
After careful consideration, we have come to the unfortunate decision that we must cancel this year’s St. Nicholas Cookie Walk. We hope to be back next year, better than ever. Please have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Merry Christmas.
The always-festive event, held in early December in the church basement, offers about 75 varieties of homemade cookies and pastries each year. As the name implies, you take a walk around cookie-filled tables and pick your favorites.

Last year's Cookie Walk, which would have the 12th annual, was also canceled due to the pandemic.

Concerns over COVID-19 prompt cancellation of the annual Cookie Walk

Likely not a surprise, but disappointing nonetheless: Organizers have cancelled what would have been the 12th Annual Cookie Walk at St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on Avenue A and 10th Street.

According to an Instagram post from Saturday:
It is with heavy hearts that we have officially cancelled this year’s St. Nicholas Cookie Walk. The safety of our guests, bakers and workers is our top priority. We hope to see you all in December 2021.
