Dunkin' debuts on East Houston

Photos by Stacie Joy

There's a new Dunkin' in town... the outpost debuted Tuesday at 250 E. Houston St. between Avenue A and Avenue B (first mentioned here).

And it's a pretty spiffy-looking Dunkin' ...
EVG contributor Stacie Joy met the family running this franchise...
There was a Dunkin'/Baskin Robbins combo along this stretch previously... though in the one-level storefronts were demolished to make way for a new 11-story residential building.

Dunkin' to make triumphant return to 250 E. Houston St.

Don't look now, but a Dunkin' is returning to 250 E. Houston St.

Signage is now up in one of the recently remodeled storefronts here between Avenue A and Avenue B.

The Dunkin'/Baskin-Robbins combo was a casualty late last summer when the storefronts on the eastern end of the retail strip were emptied ahead of demolition for a new residential building. (See those plans here.)

Anyway, this looks to be a solo Dunkin' operation. No sign of Baskin-Robbins. So you'll have to settle for doughnuts/donuts.

Police searching for suspect who robbed the Dunkin' Donuts on 14th Street near Avenue B

Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly robbed the Dunkin' Donuts on 14th Street just west of Avenue B last Thursday morning around 9:30.

In its recap of the crime, the Post reported that the suspect failed to open the register. The man then "grabbed five or six donuts and stuffed them in a paper bag."

On his way out the door, the suspect "repeatedly punched" an employee in the face who had tried to intervene.

That Dunkin' Donuts outpost on 14th Street is currently closed

That Dunkin' Donuts location on 14th Street (at Irving Place) has been stripped of its coffee-and-doughnut identity here in the base of NYU's University Hall.

EVG reader Gojira shared this photo, showing paper covering the windows of the dorm's retail space.

This location is no longer on the DD website... (and not the first time a DD has shuttered around here) ...

However, an NYU dining website lists that the DD is closed for the summer. In addition, University Hall is is in Phase 2 of interior renovations and electrical upgrades.

As for the DD, perhaps it could use a revamp too based on the array of 1-star reviews on Yelp.

Dunkin' done on 1st Avenue at 13th Street

The former Dunkin' (Donuts) outpost on First Avenue between 12th Street and 13th Street has been gutted... and the space is now for rent... (thanks dwg for the tip and photos!)

This outpost closed back on Oct. 21. There's still a Dunkin' just a few blocks to the north...

No sign of any teary farewell signage at this Dunkin' (see this post). This also marks the second national chain (see Papa John's) to close this fall along this section of First Avenue.

Reader report: Car jumps curb, collides with Dunkin' Donuts on 1st Avenue

Close call outside the Dunkin' Donuts on First Avenue and East Sixth Street early this evening.

According to witnesses, an older man was backing into a parking spot in front of the McDonald's when he apparently hit the accelerator by accident, driving up onto the sidewalk outside Dunkin' Donuts, taking out part of the railing in the process...

... narrowly avoiding hitting an estimated six people, including EVG Facebook friend Mike Diaz, who shared these photos...

The driver was also not injured, though he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

And the revamped 1st Avenue Dunkin' Donuts is back open; now with new banner

Less than two weeks after closing for renovations, the Dunkin' Donuts on the corner of First Avenue and East Sixth Street is back open with a fresh-new DD look...

However, the giant DD cup never returned...

...and they apparently never found an advertiser for their Complimentary Hand Sanitizer, which workers have discarded...

Updated:

OK! Here's a daytime shot showing the new DD banner. OPEN LATE.

Renovations at Dunkin' Donuts sees (temporary?) removal of big Dunkin' Donuts cup from marquee

As we exclusively revealed last week, the Dunkin' Donuts on First Avenue and East Sixth Street closed on Nov. 13 for renovations. (Actual renovations, not "renovations.")

Anyway, as we closely monitored the situation here every single day, we noticed that the iconic giant Dunkin' Donuts coffee cup is no longer on the marquee…

No word yet if/when the DD cup will return. (It was looking rather weathered.)

For now, the DD cup will live on in our memories… and Flickr

For 10th birthday, Dunkin' Donuts on 1st Avenue and East 6th Street closes for renovations

The Dunkin' Donuts on the northeast corner of First Avenue and Sixth Street shut down after the business day on Thursday... the plywood and the closed for renovation sign are up... Happy 10th birthday!? (Seems like this DD has been here longer...)

As you can see, they are closing for "less than two weeks." And there's no truth to the rumor that the big DD cup out front will be available for use as a hot tub at parties.

East 14th Street Dunkin' Donuts shuffle complete

[Copyrighted photo by EV Arrow from July]

As we've been pretty much exclusively reporting, the Dunkin' Donuts at 218 E. 14th St. was moving a few storefronts to the west toward Third Avenue (see above photo).

That move is compete with the Grand Opening of the new (smaller) DD at 208 E. 14th St….

Meanwhile, back at No. 218, workers are dismantling the old DD space… Unfortunately, we were unable to save the Eli Manning "Smoke the Competition" ad for the smoked sausage breakfast sandwich…

This storefront had been for rent at $144 a square foot … the listing notes the space is now off the market.

Dunkin' Donuts moving into the Jefferson's retail space

[Back in April]

Back in April, we noted that the Dunkin' Donuts at 218 E. 14th St. near Third Avenue was for lease.

And we promptly forgot about it… since then several readers noted that the DD will be moving west a few storefronts to 208 E. 14th St., part of the Jefferson's retail space...

Anyway, just a short move for the DDers …

As always, if this helps… pointing out the move for you…

A CityMD opened up in the main retail space at the Jefferson, the newish still 82-unit residential building in the North West East Village.

The Dunkin' Donuts space on East 14th Street is for rent

A "for rent" sign via Ardor/Citi Habitats is now hanging above the Dunkin' Donuts at 218 E. 14th St. near Third Avenue.

According to the listing at LoopNet, the rental rate is $144 per square foot … on the 3,500-square-foot space (1,400 square feet in the basement).

We asked two DD employees if they were moving or closing. They didn't know (based on their non-response).

So moving or closing… it's all happened before in DD land here. Last summer, the Dunkin' Donuts at 520 E. 14th St. moved a storefronts away between Avenue A and Avenue B. That Dunkin' Donuts on Second Avenue between East 10th Street and East 11th Street closed back in January 2010.

Here is your new Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin-Robbins combo on East 14th Street

Hey, that new Dunkin' Donuts is now open at 542 E. 14th St. just west of Avenue B … and it is one of those combo operations with a Baskin-Robbins. (For those times when you feel like doughnuts and ice cream!)

Meanwhile, the Dunkin' Donuts a few storefronts away at 520 E. 14th St. has closed, as expected.

Be curious to see what awesome new business lands in the old DD space at No. 520. (Gino the tailor was rent hiked out of one of the three storefronts here back in the spring.) This will be prime real estate now that No. 520 is all that stands between the two incoming retail-residential buildings.

No. 542 was the former home of La Isla Restaurant, which closed in July 2012.

Here is your East 14th Street Dunkin' Donuts plywood

The plywood is up outside part of 542 E. 14th St., where workers are carving out space for a new Dunkin' Donuts.

A tipster told us back in May that the Dunkin' Donuts several storefronts away at 520 E. 14th St. will move here.

Dunkin' Donuts-branded door handle arrives on Cooper Square

As we first reported back on May 16, the city's 34,000th Dunkin' Donuts is taking over the former Norman's Sound & Vision space at 67 Cooper Square.

We happened to notice one small detail of DD's arrival: the door handle…

Norman's Sound & Vision closed after 22 years in August 2012 … with high rents chasing them to Williamsburg.

Dunkin' Donuts moving on East 14th Street

A tipster tells us that the Dunkin' Donuts at 520 E. 14th St. is on the move… heading east toward Avenue B a few storefronts away … to the former home of La Isla Restaurant, which closed in July 2012

DOB permits for this address at No. 542 point to a renovations for a Dunkin' Donuts …

Meanwhile, what will become of the storefronts at No. 520? The building will be the last thing standing here … with bookend 7-floor retail-residential complexes on the way

Gino DiGirolamo's Royal Tailor shop at No. 520 is closing on May 31. Gino is retiring after 50 years in business. A bit of a forced retirement given that the landlord was doubling his rent here.

In other Dunkin' Donuts news … as we reported on Friday, a DD is taking the former Norman's Sound & Vision storefront at 67 Cooper Square.

But of course!: Former Norman's Sound & Vision space becoming a Dunkin' Donuts

[EVG file photo from August 2012]

After 22 years, Norman's Sound & Vision closed at 67 Cooper Square near East Seventh Street back in August 2012.

Now comes word via EVG Facebook friend Michael Hirsch that the space will become a — ding, ding! — Dunkin' Donuts.

Sure enough!

The DOB permits approved on Tuesday show work for a DD in this space...

Meanwhile, just give us a kick down here on the floor when a Starbucks or bank or 7-Eleven moves into the Kim's space.
