In case Lucy's was in your plans this Thanksgiving holiday

Per usual this time of year, Lucy is on a break here at 135 Avenue A ... back on Dec. 11, per the festive sign on the door between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street.

We've never seen a Santa adorn one of her signs before... flowers, smiley faces and suns, but never a Santa.

Lucy's will return Aug. 14

Lucy is on her usual summer break here on Avenue A between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street… back open on Aug. 14…

Meanwhile, a random Lucy's photo from the EVG archives…

As I recall, this photo is from early on a Saturday night last November. Someone asked Lucy to turn on a specific college football game. She found a Yankees Classic on YES and asked if this was OK.

Lucy's will return on Dec. 10

Over at 135 Avenue A, Lucy if off for her customary holiday break... as you can see from the sign, the bar will be back open on Dec. 10.

And is Lucy's the only bar in the East Village with a VFW sticker on the front door?

In case you were going to Lucy's this weekend…

Meant to note this earlier in the week… Lucy is on a break until next Thursday here on Avenue A.

Frowny face.

Lucy's is back open, Hallelujah

Lucy's, one of our favorite bars, had been closed of late on Avenue A … likely on another customary break ... before Thanksgiving, we spotted a sign saying that the bar would be reopen on Dec. 6. But, as far as we know, that never happened… and the bar remained closed… including last weekend. (Who could blame her.) A reader spotted a sign on Dec. 13 saying closed, and instructing people to go next door to Doc Holliday's.

Still not open as of Wednesday. There was understandable concern.

However, last night, Lucy was back… and it was really nice.

Lucy's is on a holiday break

Oh! Stopped by Lucy's the other late afternoon only to discover… she is on holiday until next Friday. And these signs really do need a smiley face.

Lucy's will return Aug. 12 or 13th

Or maybe Aug. 2 or 3. Hard to tell really. Anyway, time for the usual summer break here on Avenue A. No Smiley Face sign this time though. :(

On Avenue A, Lucy's, an EVG favorite, is on her usual late summer break...

... and back on Aug. 9.

Meanwhile, speaking of Lucy, Shawn Chittle ran into her on Avenue A late Saturday afternoon...

Everyone loves Lucy's

[Photo from 2010 by Bob Arihood via Neither More Nor Less]

Ludwika Mickevicius is the subject of the "Character Study" feature in the Times. You know her better, of course as the Lucy of Lucy's on Avenue A.

A quick excerpt then you can go read the whole thing...

As the East Village cleaned up around it, Lucy’s remained the prototypical dive bar: a comfortable cave bathed in low red light, with a dingy dropped ceiling and worn linoleum on the floor. One arcade game, one jukebox, two pool tables, two small drinking tables, a dozen stools and a heavy oak bar. All are steeped in the character of Ms. Mickevicius: straightforward and practical. No frills, no nonsense, no whining.

“Many people hear about me and they come in and say, ‘Lucy, don’t change anything; we like it like this,’ ” she said. “Plus, change costs a lot of money.”

Also, Lucy was the subject of a feature at the NYU Local a few weeks back... From that piece:

As for the future of Lucy’s, the hard work keeps her from thinking about the longterm. The song “Death is Not the End,” a Bob Dylan cover by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, eerily drones in the background. “I don’t have a plan exactly, I have no time to think about this!” She laughs. “I think some day is coming and I must think of what to do, but for now, I just work like regular, working, caring. Yeah, that’s enough, especially for me, just one woman.”

Good things: Lucy's back open sooner than expected

A few weeks ago we noted that Lucy's was on another break ... per the sign on our favorite on Avenue A...

But. Last night, the lights were on, the door open, etc. And Lucy was back behind the bar a week earlier than expected...

Lucy's is closed until Aug. 12 (smiley face)

A reader just asked yesterday morning what was going on with Lucy's on Avenue A. Seemed like the place has been closed the last few days. And no note, like usual.

However! A note appeared yesterday.... Lucy is on holiday again...

Also, this note doesn't quite stack up against previous closed notes...

Lucy's is on a holiday, friends

And on Avenue A, Lucy's, an EV Grieve favorite, is on one of its usual holidays... back open next Thursday...

We always like the sunny, handwritten signs marking her vacations... Like!

Good sights: Lucy's back open last night

Lucy's has been closed of late (without a note, per usual) ... Didn't get the chance to stop, though, to see what was happening ... a reader had said that she was off on her annual visit to Poland....

Noted

From the Page Six "Sightings" today:

Scarlett Johansson, in a fedora and thick, black-rimmed glasses, playing pool at Lucy's in the East Village . . .
