New York State is selling off the contents of Matthew Kenney's restaurant Sestina

Next Wednesday, the State of New York is auctioning off the contents of Sestina, vegan chef Matthew Kenney's pasta restaurant at 67 Second Ave. at Fourth Street. 

Reps for the Department of Taxation and Finance posted the notices yesterday on the restaurant, which the state had seized in late August for nonpayment of taxes.
The auction will occur at the restaurant. Go here to find what's available to bid on next week.

Sestina's Instagram account chalked up the seizure to "technical difficulties" back on Aug. 31.
Kenney opened Sestina in the fall of 2020, one of several restaurants he operates in the East Village.

Meanwhile, a Sestina just debuted in Culver City, Calif. 

This marked the fourth Kenney concept here in the past few years, following Plantmade, Plant Food + Wine and Arata.

There was also a revolving door of restaurants here before Kenney took over. La Contrada ... Contrada (not to be confused with La Contrada) ... Calliope and Belcourt all came and went since 2012.

Casse-Cou Chocolate bringing vegan treats to 4th Street

There's a new era for chocolate at 63 E. Fourth St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery... Sebastian Brecht's OCD Chocolate Shop has been revamped... as he teamed up with plant-based celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to launch Casse-Cou Chocolate, a vegan chocolate store and online marketplace.

Per VegNews, who first reported on this transition: 
The brand will offer a variety of artisanal confections made with free-trade chocolate, including pralines, ganaches, truffles, and chocolate bars. Kenney developed the concept in partnership with Chef Sebastian Brecht with the mission of elevating confections to the level of fine wine and cuisine without hurting animals. 

The offerings at Casse-Cou will include bars and bonbons in flavor combinations such as Pistachio, Saffron, and Caramel; Maca and Goji; Pedro Ximenez (a type of wine grape) and Salted Largueta Almond; and Black Currant and Yogurt. 

The shop is expected to open today (and in time for Valentine's Day). 

This is the latest East Village-based concept for Kenney, whose nearby vegan restaurants include Plant Food + Wine and Sestina.

Matthew Kenney changing up concepts on 2nd Avenue and 4th Street



Plant-based celebrity chef Matthew Kenney is changing up concepts again at 67 Second Ave. at Fourth Street, where Sestina, a pasta bar, is opening later this summer, per its website (thanks to Vinny & O for the photos!)...



And they already have an Eventbrite page for the Sestina Thanksgiving dinner.

This marks the fourth Kenney concept here in the past few years, following Plantmade, Plant Food + Wine and Arata.

Matthew Kenney expands his 2nd Avenue plant-based empire; eyes former Cucina Di Pesce space



Plant-based celebrity chef Matthew Kenney continues to add to his Second Avenue empire.

To recap, he has Plant Food + Wine (the former Arata) on the southwest corner of Fourth Street.

Kenney is also involved with 00 + Co. and Bar Verde right next door on Second Avenue.



And most recently, the now-former Kona Coffee and Company, which just opened in November 2017 a few storefronts away at No. 57, is now under the Kenney umbrella...



Back in March, Kenney teamed up with Pure Green to launch PlantMade, a cafe on Second Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street. He is apparently no longer part of that Green team...



Meanwhile, Kenney plans to take over the former Cucina Di Pesce space at 87 E. Fourth St. near Second Avenue for a venue (rumored to be called Medium) in early 2019. He's on this month's CB3-SLA agenda for a new liquor license for the address. (The questionnaire has not been posted online yet.)



That seafood-focused Italian restaurant closed in September after 32 years in service.

Plant-based chef Matthew Kenney's Arata opens today on 2nd Avenue and 4th Street

Plant-based chef Matthew Kenney's latest Second Avenue venture debuts today with Arata.

Florence Fabricant at The New York Times has a preview of the restaurant on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and Fourth Street that "highlights the diverse and abundant plant-based ingredients of Asia":

Arata, which has sleek, minimalist décor, will serve kimchi pancakes; several salads; rice cakes with long beans and sugar snap peas; tempura mushroom hand rolls; and steamed buns with mushrooms, eggplant and other fillings tucked inside. Assorted ramen and udon bowls will brim with ingredients like chickpeas, smoked tofu, Sichuan tempeh “sausage” and baby bok choy. A cacao matcha tart is one of the desserts.

Kenney is also involved with 00 + Co. and Bar Verde right next door on Second Avenue. And in March, Kenney teamed up with Pure Green to launch PlantMade, a cafe on Second Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street.

This corner space on Second Avenue and Fourth Street has been four restaurants since 2012 — La Contrada ... Contrada (not to be confused with La Contrada) ... Calliope and Belcourt.

Matthew Kenney bringing yet another plant-based restaurant to 2nd Avenue



Plant-based chef Matthew Kenney must really like Second Avenue.

Signage arrived yesterday on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and Fourth Street for Arata, another Kenney-backed restaurant. Here's more about this concept:

Arata highlights the diverse and abundant plant-based ingredients of Asia. Japanese for fresh and new, Arata will offer steamed buns, small plates, noodle bowls, tempura, vegetable sushi and Japanese inspired desserts. Arata will have an innovative cocktail and sake program. Opening in EARLY MAY 2018...

Kenney, whose bio says that he is "crafting the future of food®," is also involved with 00 + Co. and Bar Verde right next door on Second Avenue.

Last month, Kenney teamed up with Pure Green to launch PlantMade, a cafe on Second Avenue between Ninth Street and 10th Street. So that's four restaurants with Kenney's involvement within six blocks on Second Avenue.

Meanwhile, the signage for Arata means the end for the previous tenant — La Contrada, which opened in July 2016. This corner has seen its share of turnover in recent years with the arrivals and departures of Contrada, (not to be confused with La Contrada), Calliope and Belcourt.

Matthew Kenney's PlantMade teams up with Pure Green on 2nd Avenue



Pure Green is getting a new roommate in its space on Second Avenue between 9th Street and 10th Street.

PlantMade, a cafe via plant-based chef Matthew Kenney, whose bio says that he is "crafting the future of food®," will be serving "artisanal coffee and plant-based pastries" inside the Pure Green space.

The Pure Green-PlantMade combo debuts today after a week of renovations...



Pure Green, which has multiple NYC locations, sells cold-pressed juices, smoothies and various bowls of açaí, opened last March in this new storefront. They originally shared space with Greecologies, whose menu included a variety of grass-fed yogurts as well as desserts, coffees and teas.

Kenney is also involved with 00 + Co. and Bar Verde a few blocks to the south on Second Avenue.
