Where to cool off when the heat is on

An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for NYC today ... with a triple-digit heat index expected.

The city has its Cooling Centers open. You can find a list of sites at this link (you can narrow down the choices by zip code; many of the options are for seniors only).

 Local options include:

• Ottendorfer Library, 135 Second Ave. between St. Mark's Place and Ninth Street — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Hamilton Fish Park Library, 415 E. Houston St. between Pitt and Columbia — 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(The Tompkins Square branch remains closed for renovations.)

Also listed among the cooling centers: The big new Petco on Union Square East. They are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Outdoor city pools will stay open for any hour later (to 8 p.m.!) today and tomorrow.

You could also go old school and open a hydrant... of course, that is ILLEGAL!
But! There is a legal way to go about this. Per an article of The City yesterday:
You can put in a request to the Fire Department to open a hydrant. If it’s approved, a member of the fire department will come to fit the hydrant with a spray cap and return that same day to close it up. To request a spray cap fitting, go to your local firehouse and fill out a short form.

You can find your nearest firehouse on the 311 Firehouses page. You must be over 18 years old and bring your ID with you.

AC KOs Iconic Hand Rolls opening weekend

Iconic Hand Rolls opened for business last Thursday night at 135 First Ave. ... unfortunately, as multiple readers noted, Iconic had to close for the weekend due to an AC outage...

EVG respost: The best outdoor spot for free air conditioning in the East Village

As I exclusively reported, it is warm out. So! Perhaps it's a good time to repost this, uh, post from July 23, 2011... May come in handy...

It's right here on Sixth Street and Hall Place Taras Shevchenko Place... there are several spots here outside the new Cooper Union building that provide a welcome blast of cool air... right where this fellow is lounging/passed out.

All is well in air-conditioning land along East Seventh Street

Here's a slightly belated follow-up post on the situation at 140-150 E. Seventh St. between Avenue A and Avenue B... As we reported last May 10 ... to address leaks, the landlords were going to seal up the wall sleeves for air conditioners ... and were asking residents to purchase window units (which the landlord will kick in $200 for...)

Several residents were quite unhappy with this situation. (Read our post here for all the background.)

Meanwhile! A resident provides an update: "All is fine in air conditioning land, but the scaffolding will be up for a while longer while they repoint and replace the AC sleeves."

Here's the latest missive from the landlords...

Another six months for the scaffolding? Down in time for the holiday season!

Why there could be a long, hot summer at 140-150 E. Seventh St.

Why there could be a long, hot summer at 140-150 E. Seventh St.

Last Friday, we noticed that workers had erected a really long stretch of sidewalk bridges along 140-150 E. Seventh St. between Avenue A and Avenue B...

A resident filled us in on what's happening... Short version: to address leaks, the landlords are sealing up the wall sleeves for air conditioners instead ... and are asking residents to purchase window units (which the landlord will kick in $200 for...)

This development isn't sitting so well with some residents.

There are memos.

First, from the landlord. The following arrived after the sidewalk bridge was up and confusing residents. (Someone already scribbled his or her disapproval on the note.)

An excerpt:

We will be removing your Wall AC Unit and seal up the hole that is left. A $200 credit will be given for your purchase of a Window AC Unit. JRC Supers will handle the installation free of charge.

There will be dust and debris from the work performed. Please be sure to keep your windows closed if workers are nearby or if you leave your apartment.

And here is response from a resident (or residents).

An excerpt:

If the landlord takes each tenants' AC wall unit away, is not this a reduction in services? Would that not equal a reduction in rent?

How is it we should be asked to keep our windows closed for THREE MONTHS and have our air conditioner (some of us have purchased our own wall units) taken away just as the HOT months of summer are beginning for a mere $200 credit.

Also, is this considered a Major Capital Increase that will benefit the landlord only, and ultimately cause our RENTS to be RAISED?

Anyway, here's how it all might look one day.

Now!

Later!

Our tipster says that the landlords are pretty cool, and are generally responsive ... It's a good place to live, though this situation is setting up for a long, hot summer at 140-150 E. Seventh St.

Sure, it's warm today, but...

Abandoned air conditioners ready to cool you off in AC heaven

As I am exclusively reporting, it's pretty warm outside right now....

And, subsequently, a lot of ACs are on... and a lot of people seem to be tossing their old ACs, which all may need just a little work.... I think these babies might need to have their filters cleaned...
