The Odessa name has been removed from its former sidewalk canopy

Speaking of signs... noticed last week that the name of the "Odessa" had been removed from the sidewalk canopy at the former Odessa Cafe and Bar.

There was talk that the Odessa folks would reopen the space at 117 Avenue A, but that is not going to happen, as we noted last week.

Oh well. Anyway, we always like sidewalk canopies you know.

Here comes IHOP's sidewalk canopy

Look out... coming through... After adding the three-story IHOP banner yesterday, workers are on the scene of the EVOHOP this morning installing the sidewalk canopy, which will extend nearly to 14th Street... Perhaps this is just part of Art in Odd Places that's taking place now along 14th Street? (Ha.)

Thanks to Jennifer at Xoom for the photo...

A new canopy for Gallagher's Steakhouse, eventually

A new canopy for Gallagher's Steakhouse, celebratings its 81st year on 52nd Street, arrived yesterday...

... the old one was looking rather worn...

...however, there appeared to be some issue with the new one (or maybe it was just a fitting?) ...

...so it was back to the shop for both...

Lights on for the new B&H sign

The other day, we noticed workers tinkering around with the new B&H sign on Second Avenue...

...turns out they were just installing new lights on the sign...

And the green is growing on me (so to speak).

An unscientific survey! What you had to say about the B&H sign

The other day I posted photos of the new-look front at B&H on Second Avenue... I asked for your thoughts... But first!

I checked in with Jim and Karla Murray, the acclaimed photographers behind "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York." They include this photo of B&H circa 2001 in their book:

And what do they think of the 2010 version?

While we will always miss the old version of the sign, we have to applaud them for not going the vinyl awning route that so many stores now use. The green color of the sign and entire storefront IS very attention-grabbing. Not many stores have a green storefront!

And here are your comments...

I like it! They kept the sign true to its roots, only green.

I'm on the love train. Could have been a disaster but it is just a freshened up version of the original.

Looks like they're going for a more streamlined appearance by sticking with the all-green (sorta) color scheme. Good for them, good for the EV.

Likey!

i knooow, it's probably the best that can be done, and it is in good taste in staying w/ the original, but can i just say i miss a tiny bit the faded blue and just plain ol' letters? but everyone's right -- at least they didn't due a huge bubble sign.

So...that's new sign: 9... hate the new sign: 3

B&H hangs its new sign: What do you think?

The new B&H sign is up now on Second Avenue...

Before!

What do you think of the new sign? Essentially the same...except for that really green green. Makes me a little seasick.

B&H gets its canopy but loses a sign

We have good news and bad news about B&H... last week we mentioned that workers removed the canopy...and now, a new one that looks very familiar replaced it...

However! EV Grieve reader Dan was walking by on Saturday when two workers were removing the B&H sign. He took the two photos below. Will B&H simply refurbish the old sign or put up something new?

And here's B&H as it awaits a new sign...

Where's the B&H canopy?

Something is missing over at East Village institute B&H...

...namely the canopy... perhaps it's just in the shop for some minor repairs, and not an overhaul...

The canopies of NYC

Speaking of restaurants... I had this idea for a photo project: Take a picture of every bar/restaurant in NYC with a canopy. Something about a canopy makes even the most humdrum joint seem a little more classy...maybe even a touch of old New York. It was going well the first few minutes until I walked by the McDonald's on Third Avenue near St. Mark's -- the one with the canopy...

Anyway, here's a sampling of the project so far... only a few hundred more to go! (And if you have suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments...)
