Gelarto officially (re)opens on Avenue A

Following an opening sneak preview back in June, the owners of Gelarto closed to make a few improvements to their gelato business at 145 Avenue A at Ninth Street.

On Wednesday, the new shop reopened... EVG contributor Steven shared these photos of the interior...

According to the Gelarto Instagram account, the shop's hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily (until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday).

Thoughts on the 9/11 mural on 9th and A

On the previous post about Gelarto, the new gelato shop at 145 Avenue A, Nigel, one of the shop's proprietors, left several comments.

For starters, he's interested in receiving input about the 9/11 mural on the Ninth Street side of the building (read more about the mural here) ...

Per Nigel:

We would love to do something with the 9/11 mural that has now been graffitied over on our black wall and it would be great to get some local feedback or suggestions for this. What would everyone like to see — the same but cleaned up, or a new 9/11 commemorative mural?

Meanwhile, he apologized that the shop will be closed for a few days.

"We are moving things around a little in the store, ready for our proper official opening (no more test runs), with full menu and all staff up to speed. I will post on this blog when I am 100% certain of the opening day and we will advertise in the area, but I hope you will all be able to make it as it will be a great opportunity to try our gelato for free. I look forward to meeting you all."

These flyers arrived on the storefront yesterday...

White out at new gelato space on Avenue A

As noted on Monday, a gelato shop called Gelarto has opened at 145 Avenue A at Ninth Street. (They are still officially in soft-open mode.)

Several commenters noted what they perceived to be an "ugly brick façade" here.

Anyway, as multiple EVG readers pointed out, workers painted the storefront yesterday...

And, as we understand it, Gelarto signage will be arriving in the next 10 days to give it that finished look.

Tough times for desserts on 2nd Avenue

Several readers noted that the Red Mango on Second Avenue just below East Fourth Street had been closed in recent weeks. Winter hiatus?

The ownership confirmed to us that this location has permanently closed.

Red Mango just opened here in February, which may not have been the best time to open a FroYo shop…

A Red Mango also came and went pretty quickly on St. Mark's Place back in 2008.

Meanwhile, directly next door, Gelato Ti Amo, which was part of an international Tuscany-based chain, has also permanently closed. Workers were cleaning out the 2-year-old space last night.

Perhaps there are enough dessert choices in the neighborhood?

Former Milo Printing space becoming a gelato shop on Avenue A

EVG regular dwg notes that signage for Casa Gusto, a gelato shop, is now up at 199 Avenue A near East 12th Street, site of the former Milo Printing.

Meanwhile, next door, the former Furry Land Pet Supplies space has been chopped in half. Taking one side: a hair salon.

Plans for a wine bar in the whole space were shot down this past summer.

Fresco now open on Second Avenue; not serving mashed potatoes

Back on May 18, Jeremiah Moss noted the rather cryptic symbol on the window of the former Estroff Pharmacy on Second Avenue near St. Mark's ... He asked, Fro-yo? Mashed potatoes? (The sighting also brought on an anxiety dream) ...

We were going for a mashed potato shop too...

Anyway, it is gelato, as we later learned, and Fresco opened on Tuesday, reports EVG reader Brian T., who passed along these photos...

One EVG regular tried a sample and gave it an A+ ... or, if it was the Summer Games, a 15.8777.

EV eatery etc.: Benny's expands on A, gelato signage arrives on Second Avenue

Just a few quick storefront items... Sal's closed back in March... and, as several readers have pointed out, Benny's is taking over the space next door here on Avenue at East Sixth Street... Benny's used to run their to-go business from this side...

...and on Saturday, signage went up for the new gelato place/cafe coming soon on Second Avenue between St. Mark's and East Ninth Street...

How about some more gelato for Second Avenue?

Jeremiah and I have both been watching the former Estroff Pharmacy space on Second Avenue between St. Mark's Place and East Ninth Street ... As he noted about the "cryptic symbol" in the front window of the incoming business... "Fro-yo? Mashed potatoes?" ... (And cause for an anxiety dream) ...

[Via JVNY]

Workers on the scene this morning are putting in the new signage and front window, etc. Any guesses?

It will be a gelato shop/cafe.

Gelato? Aren't you thinking that a new gelato shop just opened on Second Avenue? Yes, down just south of East Fourth Street...

Meanwhile, around the corner on St. Mark's Place...

The shell of the former Timi's Gelateria Classica™ — "a gelato franchise for the 21st century, with true Italian artisanal gelato made fresh daily" — sits empty since closing late last year.
