Retail space at historic 330 Bowery is for rent

Over at 330 Bowery (aka 54 Bond St.), the main retail space is now for rent inside the historic circa-1874 building at Bond Street.

RKF has the listing... no word on the rent for the three levels and 2,300 square feet...

Last fall, a John Barrett luxury hair salon, which also sold vintage Rolex watches priced to $30,000, opened here at the former Bouwerie Lane Theater.

That didn't work out well for a variety of reasons. This location was supposed be the first of many John Barrett salons across the country, at least according to this piece I found earlier this year at WWD:

Barrett and Jim Hedges, his business partner and chief executive officer of John Barrett Holdings LLC, are out to reinvent the business model of the luxury salon — making it more inviting, more finely curated, more retail-driven — while laying the groundwork for a string of units across the U.S. and beyond.

The Bowery and Bond Street location ... opened in October, as Barrett’s first step onto the New York scene beyond his original base at Bergdorf Goodman. But it was beset by physical disruptions and unexpected delays like street construction outside the windows, 12 days without water and noise from a Con Ed generator, which made it difficult to recruit the high-level hairdressers they needed at the salon along with their clientele.

“It has been a slow start,” Hedges acknowledged. But six new stylists are starting this year and “we have every confidence,” he said.

In February, Barrett reportedly fired Hedges "in the midst of a crowd of 30 or 40 people at the Bergdorf Goodman salon."

Anyway, there isn't a shortage of available storefronts nearby, such as the former Environment Furniture space ... and PYT and SRO Pizza ... and Patricia Field ... and Tatyana Boutique.

The Bowery street sign returns without the David

[EVG photo from Jan. 25]

Back during the Great Blizzard of Jan. 23®, a group of Bowie fans (the Little Italy Street Art Project) added David to the street sign on the Bowery at East Houston.

The city moved surprisingly quickly to amend the offending Bowery Bowie-ed sign. The city removed it in early February, as BoweryBoogie noted.

And today, a new sign has returned – without the David — to guide travelers on this storied NYC thoroughfare...

The storefronts for rent on the Bowery

Environment Furniture, which "creates timeless contemporary collections for the home that respect the planet," has been holding a going-out-of-business sale at its showroom on the Bowery between Great Jones and East Fourth Street. Now the storefront is for rent. (The listing isn't online at Ozymandius Realty.)

Meanwhile, there are plenty of other storefronts available nearby (in the few blocks between East Fourth and East Houston) on the Bowery ... such as the former Subway sandwich shop...

... and the spaces where PYT and SRO Pizza were...

...and Patricia Field's storefront... (Field is retiring from the boutique business after 50 years... the store's last day is Feb. 28.)

...and the now-closed Tatyana Boutique...

Also, just as an FYI...

Rock is either no longer dead... or it died... as the Rock is Dead? banner has been removed at the John Varvatos store...

Also, just as an FYI Part 2...

The newish Kenneth Cole shop on the Bowery at Bond was closed over the weekend after a pipe broke/burst...

...and the 7-Eleven at 351 Bowery between East Third Street and East Fourth Street was randomly closed yesterday for unspecified reasons...

The former Tatyana Boutique space is for rent on the Bowery

The Las Vegas-based fashion brand that sells upscale retro dresses, shoes and accessories recently closed in the Avalon Bowery Place complex at East First Street. That space is now for lease.

The listing at SCG Retails doesn't include the asking rent for the 2,207 square-foot storefront between Blue & Cream and DBGB.

Our educated guess on the monthly rent is — a lot.

Tatyana Boutique is closing on the Bowery

The upscale fashion brand that sells retro dresses, shoes and accessories is closing its outpost in the Avalon Bowery Place complex at East First Street.

The store is expected to wrap it up next Monday... or possibly a few days after that, according to an email to customers that an EVG reader forwarded to us.

The Las Vegas-based chain (it launched at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino) with a dozen locations in the United States (and one in Toronto) started its life on the Bowery in late 2012 as Bettie Page Clothing. (A lawsuit took care of the licensing rights.)

This marks the third high-end store in several blocks here on the Bowery to close... Patricia Fields recently announced that she is closing her Bowery storefront, telling the Times that at age 74, she is "no longer interested in devoting the time necessary to operating this place." In addition, Environment Furniture is shutting down its retail space two blocks to the north on the Bowery.

Tough retail Environment? Upscale furniture shop closing on the Bowery

Environment Furniture, which "creates timeless contemporary collections for the home that respect the planet," is having a going-out-of-business sale at its showroom on the Bowery between Great Jones and East Fourth Street...

The Environment website described their location this way:

In the heart of the bustling hip neighborhood of the Bowery, iconic destination for the underground art world and music community. Footsteps away from the Bowery Hotel, Il Buco and former CBGB historic location.

The store arrived in 2012... and later expanded into the adjacent space at 350 Bowery (previously Gallery 151).

Flipping out over the Bowery

Shoes on a wire are a commonplace sight around here... meaning different things to different people...

Anyway!

Can't recall seeing this before... flippers!

EVG regular peter radley spotted these earlier today on the Bowery at Bleecker... perhaps someone from the Patagonia store at 317 Bowery got a little wacky...

Replacing and extending some water mains on the Bowery

Meant to note last week the start of the water main upgrade on the Bowery between East Fourth Street and Great Jones …

Tried to find a completion date for this via the DDC website… came up with this… a June 2019 timeline.

That's probably for the entire Bowery project (though it is conceivable that it could take the city three-plus years just for this block) … the DDC map shows the extension/replacement work going down to Canal.

Selling 216 Bowery

Catching up to an item that arrived in our inbox Thursday… about Eastern Consolidated marketing "a development site" at 216 Bowery between Prince and Spring …

Via the EVG inbox…

The 25-foot-wide property includes a three-story, 4,900-square-foot building that will be delivered vacant. Located in the Little Italy Special District, zoning will allow the construction of a new development totaling 15,000 buildable square feet.

Said Adelaide Polsinelli, senior managing director and principal for Eastern Consolidated: “The property is in an extremely hot area of downtown at the threshold of Soho, Nolita, the Lower East Side, East Village, and Little Italy, neighborhoods that are experiencing tremendous investment and undergoing rapid transformation with a dynamic mix of nightlife and dining options, art galleries, museums, hotels, condos, markets, and specialty retail.”

The last few years have seen the Bowery revitalized through a host of major commercial, residential, cultural, and institutional developments on a 10-block stretch. The Bowery Hotel at East 3rd Street and the Cooper Square Hotel at East 5th Street are among the developments that have taken full advantage of this chic location.

The Commercial Observer and BoweryBoogie have more background.

Kenneth Cole readies new storefront on the Bowery

Workers yesterday were stocking 328 Bowery, where a Kenneth Cole is opening in the days ahead here at Bond.

In reporting on the lease back in June, the Commercial Observer noted that the 10-year deal is for 2,510 square feet on the ground level and 1,604 square feet in the basement. The asking rent for is $300 per square foot. (Cole will be sharing the space with women’s clothing shop Curve, per the Observer.)

Now let's just cut and paste some from an EVG post from May 2013:

The storefront on the southwest corner of Bond and the Bowery has sat empty since the Washington Mutual closed up in March 2009 ... the space has gone though an assortment of brokers...

Previously, the space was "the new intersection of cool."

It was also a photogenic intersection for Bringing it On...

And most recently — a pitstop for Claire Forlani's disembodied scotch ad hands...

The listing from RKF that yielded Kenneth Cole arrived in May 2013.

And serious last call for our Bowery-Bond nickname to take off — BowBo.

A Joey Ramone-CBGB 40th anniversary mural for the Bowery

A new mural featuring Joey Ramone is going up today on Bleecker at the Bowery... across the way from the former CBGB... EVG reader Lola Sáenz says that the mural is by Solus and John CRASH Matos...

The mural is via The L.I.S.A. Project to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Ramones debuting at CBGB.

The Subway (sandwich shop) has closed on the Bowery

Is the new Bowery becoming too upscale for even a Subway? (OK, so the 7-Eleven is still alive and well across the way.)

Anyway, workers gutted the Subway space at 342 Bowery between Bond Street and Great Jones yesterday.

The Subway opened here in late 2009, taking over the space after Downtown Music Gallery moved to Monroe Street.

This is the latest Subway to close in the neighborhood… joining the one on East 14th StreetFirst AvenueSecond Avenue

Meanwhile, the Subway next to McDonald's on First Avenue recently came under new management …

Nike's Zoom City SNKRS Station ready to sell sneakers on the Bowery

[Last Wednesday via an EVG reader]

Workers arrived last Wednesday to erect a pop-up shop/stage on the Bowery at Great Jones… we took a few more photos in subsequent days…

It's all for Nike … a Zoom City SNKRS Station — one of eight Nike shops erected around the city as part of the NBA All-Star game weekend in NYC.

Here's a description of the Station via the Zoom City website:

The ultimate destination to pick up the latest in Nike sneakers. Performance and style take over at the Zoom City SNKRS Station.

Located at 348 Bowery (at Great Jones Street), the Zoom City SNKRS Station will feature exclusive Nike footwear, apparel and accessories.

The Zoom City SNKRS Station will be open tomorrow through Sunday.

Oh, and you just can't walk up here and shop — you need to make a reservation via the Zoom City website.

And maybe this is what the box will ultimately look like? (One of the 50 workers standing around said that it will be a Nike shoebox shape…)

Regardless, it's quite a production…

This corner space previously housed the Deth Killers of Bushwick pop-up shop. Before its life as a pop-up space, the corner was home of the Downtown Auto & Tire until April 2012.

Espoleta now serving tapas and stuff on the Bowery

Forcella Bowery recently closed … and it didn't take long for a new tenant to revamp the space at 334 Bowery.

Espoleta is now open and serving tapas and the like … here's the menu…

Urban Daddy got the first look at the interior and dishes if you're interested in seeing more.

Forcella's take-out Slice of Naples remains open next door, as BoweryBoogie reported.

The changes to 3 Bowery mainstays

Just adding up the changing Bowery landscape along East Third Street and East Second Street…

Workers continue jackhammering away at the Salvation Army's former East Village Residence on the Bowery at East Third Street. The site will one day yield a 13-floor, 30,000 square-foot mixed-use residential development.

---

The Whitehouse Hostel at 338-340 Bowery closed for good in early September. The building was sold. There are pending plans to build a 9-floor hotel in its place. Otherwise, there's not much activity here. There's still someone sitting behind the front desk … and the Pepsi machine remains in the lobby…

---

On Friday, workers erected the sidewalk bridge outside the former Amato Opera building at 319 Bowery just below East Second Street…

Landlord Steve Croman received DOB approval in September to convert the former theater into a commercial and residential building. Documents show that there will be one residence on each floor above the retail space. Amato Opera ended its long run on May 31, 2009.

And these are just the changes on one block. Curbed documented more of the Bowery's changing landscape back in August.
