D-Lish Pita has closed on Avenue A

D-Lish Pita has joined former neighbors Benny's (and Benny's to-go) in going out of business on Avenue A at East Sixth Street.

A for rent sign hangs from the D-Lish sign… and three storefronts are now vacant here.



D-Lish opened in late 2010… taking over the space from Habib's Place. We never actually tried D-Lish. Difficult to break out of the Rakka Cafe or Mamoun's habit on St. Mark's Place.

JoeDoe opening JoeDough on First Avenue

In November 2009, Habib's Place on Avenue A near Sixth Street closed rather suddenly... Then came the news that Habib relocated to the former Question Mark Cafe space at 135 First Avenue between St. Mark's and Ninth Street. And that venture seemed to close just as suddenly and quietly.



Anyway, Grub Street reports that the husband-and-wife team behind JoeDoe on East First Street are opening a gourmet sandwich shop at 135 First Avenue called — seriously — JoeDough. It will open sometime this fall, per Grub Street.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having another normal, nongourmet sandwich place like Sunny & Annie's on Avenue B at Sixth Street.

And does anyone know what happened to Habib?

That's the word anyway here on Avenue A near Sixth Street... workers said the place should be ready for d-lish food in "the next few days." Here at the former home of Habib's Place...and France's Beauty Salon.

D-Lish Pita marks another new business catering to a nightlife crowd

Last November, Habib's Place on Avenue A near Sixth Street abruptly closed.



A year later, a new tenant plans to open soon...



To to be honest, at first glance, I thought the sign read "D-list Pita," which seemed to be a rather defeatist name for a restaurant. D-list? (And it appears to be a clone of Cheep's on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.)

Anyway, when workers removed the Habib's signage last November ... we all got a peek at the former tenant — France's Beauty Salon.



In a post this past August, Jeremiah shared a photo of the salon from sometime in the mid-1990s...



Nothing again falafel places... but, once again, a new business arrives that caters to a more late-night crowd... we've talked about this plenty, but I [continue to] wish there was a way to encourage other types of non-food and nightlife-related businesses to open here...

Well! Thanks to Sean at East Village Wines for passing along the good news that Habib has relocated to the former Question Mark Cafe space on First Avenue between St. Mark's and Ninth Street. As Sean said, he's just getting started in the new location ... Indeed, as you can see, the old Question Mark signage remains...



However, some old Habib's clippings are up in the window...



And I've now officially lost track of all of Habib's former locations... Avenue A, Ninth Street, St. Mark's...

Habib's Place on Avenue A near Sixth Street has abruptly closed. Really closed. (And you can now see the name of one of the former occupants...)



Thanks to EV Grieve reader Creature for the tip and photo. According to Creature: "I swear this was a fully functioning restaurant [Saturday]. I caught a look inside, before the gate was closed, and the place was gutted. Including the name blacked out."

This was Habib's third location in the East Village since 1992.
