Today in grocery/deli comings and goings

The market that took over half of the Dunkin Donuts space on Second Avenue appears to be shuttered... They opened last February....

Meanwhile, on Avenue C near Eighth Street, the market/deli just off the corner ...

... also seems to be closed for good...

Lastly, a reader passes along some information about the Olympic on First Avenue at 13th Street, which is currently closed...

Word is the Olympic has new owners, and will become "an upscale" grocery store/deli...

A new hawk in town?

BaHa noted the following yesterday ...

"I watched a hawk sailing overhead (as I have done quite frequently in the general area of Whole Foods lately), until it swooped downward with no small amount of grace, landing on the water tower atop 18 2nd Ave. It was still there 30 or so minutes later. I suspect that is is not one of the Tompkins Square Park hawks, but perhaps one staking out new territory."

Possible delay in emergency responses today

We'll periodically have information on local fire company activities, including when they are closed for periods of time... particularly the FDNY’s Engine 28 and Ladder 11 — the two fire companies quartered at 222 E. Second St.

The following companies that are either located in the East Village or that respond to emergencies in the East Village have M.U.D. (Multi-Unit Drill) scheduled for Sundays:

E-14
E-5
L-3
E-15/L-18

Companies MAY experience delays when responding to emergencies during Multi-Unit Drill.

'Every pioneer that has passed through Lower Manhattan has no doubt felt that their time there was the Golden Age'

In the Times today, Helene Stapinski checks in with an essay titled, "The Max Fish Magic: Will It Travel Well?" In the 1990s, Max Fish was more than her favorite bar — "It was an essential part of my central nervous system."

Here's another passage:

Every pioneer that has passed through Lower Manhattan has no doubt felt that their time there was the Golden Age. There were the Dutch and then the English and Irish. And, even before them, the Indians who smoked tobacco pipes on wooded paths. I’m sure my great-grandmother, who made an extended pit stop there between Ellis Island and Jersey City, thought the neighborhood had lost its edge back in the ’90s — the 1890s. “Posers,” I can hear her say in Southern Italian dialect. “Imposters.”

Today in law enforcement notices

From Scoopy's Notebook in the week's issue of The Villager:

Bikers pedaling in the Sixth Precinct — between 14th and Houston Sts., west of Broadway — better keep on their toes. Sixth Precinct police are issuing warnings to bicycle riders to obey the rules, such as the ones that say, except for riders under the age of 12 on bikes with wheels less than 26 inches in diameter, cyclists must ride on the street, in the direction of vehicular traffic, and not on sidewalks.

The Guggenheim wants our rat-infested First Street lot

You know that vacant, rat-infested lot on East First Street near Second Avenue? The Guggenheim has its eye on it. Check out this report from Patrick Hedlund at DNAinfo:

Now, the Guggenheim is floating a plan to build a two-level structure there in late 2011 that would act as a short-term community center, gathering space and think-tank before moving to other major international cities, representatives from the museum told Community Board 3 Thursday.
