Day 1 of the free shows commemorating the 37th anniversary of the Tompkins Square Park police riot of Aug. 6, 1988,  got off to an epic start yesterday with an — shall we say? — energetic crowd.

As far as we know, this is for the Frida-OddFellows breast milk ice cream collaboration ... with ice cream giveaways this coming week at the OddFellows Dumbo location. (Also, August is National Breastfeeding Month.) Still not sure why the truck is here. Maybe the driver stopped off for breakfast at the Remedy Diner?

And speaking of outdoors, day 2 of the concerts in Tompkins Square Park marking the 37th anniversary of the Aug. 6, 1988, police riot continues this afternoon. Details here.

Exploring NYC’s public pools: A dive into design, history and equity

The Tompkins Square Park mini pool is represented in a new show at Citygroup on Forsythe Street.

Here's more about the show by Karolina Czeczek and Anna Morgowicz that opened on Thursday night: 

The Public Pools research explores the history, architectural form, and social and cultural significance of swimming pools in New York City. By studying the history, design and policies around public pools, the project seeks to spark a broader conversation about public space and urban water infrastructure.

Citygroup is an architecture collective located at 104 Forsythe St. between Broome and Grand. 

Hours: Thursday - Saturday, 2-6 p.m.

Theater for the New City starts its annual outdoor tour today on 10th Street

Theater for the New City's Street Theater Company launches its annual NYC outdoor tour today (Aug. 2!)

The show kicks off this afternoon at 2 on 10th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... adjacent to Theater for the New City's home at 155 First Ave. 

About the production: "Home Sweet Home, or A Life In New York" is "a rip-roaring original musical which tells a story of a young orphan, born in America but longing to understand his roots, as deportations shake the lives of his immigrant friends."

You can also catch "Home Sweet Home" outside St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery on Aug. 16 and in Tompkins Square Park on Sept. 14.

Saturday's opening shot

The annual Summer Streets celebration returns on the first three Saturdays of August. 

Starting today (Saturday!), miles of NYC roadways will be closed to vehicles so that people can run, walk, and bike — and not on the sidewalk. 

As in previous years, this car-free zone includes Lafayette, Astor Place and Fourth Avenue from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Dreamin’ slow in a burnin’ world

 

Here's another video from EVG bands-we-like alum Dead Tooth... the single is "Chuckin' and Wingin' it." 

The song is on the Queens-based band's recently released debut record.

And today is Bandcamp Friday, where the platform waives its revenue share and passes the funds directly to artists and labels.

About the East Village Kitchen, popping up tomorrow on 12th Street

In 2021, East Village resident Rachael Perregaux began hosting pasta-making classes out of her apartment — working from an impressively compact 66-square-foot kitchen.

Since then, the private chef, who was featured in The East Village Cookbook, has expanded her culinary offerings to include dinner parties and custom-prepared meals for families and individuals across the neighborhood and elsewhere. 

She now operates the East Village Kitchen, with pop-ups that started six months ago. 

Tomorrow (Saturday!) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., she'll be at the Community Boutique & Café, 515 E. 12th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B... with a variety of sandwiches, pastries and more...

Friday's opening shot

Taking stock after the heavy rains late yesterday afternoon, which saw flash flooding in some parts of the five boroughs. (We didn't hear about any storm-related damage here.) 

After the storms have passed, we're in for some (thank you!) cooler, drier (humidity-wise) weather. Those morning clouds will give way to some sunny skies later... and the weekend weather is near summer-perfect: Low 80, sunny, no humidity.

So open the windows wide... unless you live around 4th and B, where workers are jackhammering.
