IHOP lops off its sidewalk dining shed

IHOP's blue plywood sidewalk shed is dead. Long live IHOP's blue plywood sidewalk shed!

Pinch notes that the pancakery removed its pandemic-era sidewalk setup on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue this past week.

The outdoor space evolved over time, starting with plastic sheets before the plywood-painted IHOP blue arrived ... looking festive during the December 2023 holidays below...
As previously reported, restaurants can now apply to participate in NYC's new outdoor dining program.

Key dates, per the city

• Aug. 3: Deadline for food service establishments with existing temporary outdoor dining setups to apply to continue operating until NYC DOT approves the application.
• Nov. 1: A temporary program outdoor dining setup that applied before Aug. 3 must comply with the new Dining Out NYC design requirements by the earlier of (i) 30 days after NYC DOT approves the Dining Out NYC application or (ii) Nov. 1.

We're still hearing from people who are confused by all this and wondering when the existing structures will need to come down.

Under the new DOT-enforced regulations, enclosed, year-round roadway dining structures are no longer permitted. The revised regulations stipulate that roadway cafes must now be open-air, easily portable, and simple to assemble and dismantle. Additionally, these establishments are restricted to operating only from April through November.

Live look-in at National Pancake Day on IHOP Way

Here's a noontime look at the police barricades lining 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue (IHOP Way!) on this National Pancake Day at IHOP.

So free short stacks of pancakes until 7 p.m. New this year: Pancake Day Prizes! Including! Free Pancakes for Life. (Presumably you will need to eat those at an IHOP... and they won't magically appear in your apartment whenever you wanted. Doesn't hurt to ask for clarification, though.)

Thanks to Pinch for the photo!

The IHOP-IHOb reveal occurred this morning.

Here's USA Today:

IHOP announced that it was changing its name to "IHOb," with the “b” denoting burgers. The change is not permanent, a company spokeswoman said, but rather is a move to promote its new burger line.

Known for its pancakes, the newly dubbed IHOP is releasing seven Ultimate Steakburgers as part of its rebranding effort — all the while keeping its breakfast items on the menu.

Unfortunately, the name change didn't go the way that some people wanted...

Hey, the 14th Street IHOP is back in pancake biz

Just closing the IHOP-renovation loop ... the restaurant is back open (actually as of Monday afternoon, per an employee) here on 14th Street near Second Avenue (aka, IHOP Way).

The five-year-old IHOP closed for a makeover on Sept. 18.

Having never been inside the pre-makeover IHOP, I can't tell you how the place is any different. Anyone?

Big Blue returns to IHOP Way

The Big Blue awning has returned to the under-renovation IHOP on 14th Street.

This location between Second Avenue and Third Avenue closed for the renovations on Sept. 18. While the awning is back, the dining room still has a ways to go...

14th Street looks so bare without the large, blue IHOP awning

One week in now on the Great IHOP Makeover of 2016...and we're in the Remove the Awning phase here on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

IHOP signage on the front window promises "A whole new IHOP is coming." So that means awning too.

This location closed for the renovations on Sept. 18.

When the building that houses IHOP hit the market in 2012, the listing noted that the pancakers were paying $45,833 per month on a 10-year lease. This location opened on Sept. 20, 2011.

And a fond look back at the awning ...

East Village IHOP closed for 'makeover'

An EVG reader passed along word that the IHOP on East 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue closed on Sunday for a "makeover," per the signage ... which promises "A whole new IHOP is coming."

According to the work permit (in the ALL-CAP STYLE OF THE DOB and the NYPD TWEET TOWER):

RENOVATION TO EXISTING EATING AND DRINKING ESTABLISHMENT. SCOPE OF WORK TO INCLUDE MINOR PARTITION WORK, NEW INTERIOR FINISHES, PLUMBING FIXTURES AND MECHANICAL EXHAUST FAN IN PROPOSED TOILET. NO CHANGE OF USE, EGRESS OR OCCUPANCY UNDER.

Looking forward to seeing/hearing the mechanical exhaust fan in proposed toilet.

There isn't any reopening date posted. However, to avoid pancake panic, the sign suggests you visit the next-closest IHOP — on Broadway in Washington Heights.

The East Village IHOP opened for business just about five years ago to the date.

Today is the deadline to bid on the IHOP building

Back on Jan. 3, we pointed out that 235-237 E. 14th St., which houses the IHOP, was on the market for $14.5 million. The Massey Knakal listing noted that IHOP was paying $45,833 per month on a 10-year lease.

According to the listing, the deadline to bid on the property is today. So get that bidding paperwork in order! (And sorry for the short notice!)

To refresh your memory, here are details on the building:

The property, situated on the north side of East 14th Street between Second and Third Avenues, contains 17 low income housing units and a retail space. The building, erected in 1988, has approximately 4,300 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and approximately 18,019 square feet of residential floor area on floors 2 through 7.

And a new addition to the listing since January...

This IHOP location is one of the top performing in the country.

Life behind IHOP: 'the situation hasn't gotten much better'

Last Thursday, a reader asked if residents who lived behind the IHOP on East 14th Street still had problems with bacon fumes.

We heard from two residents via the comments.

Short answer: yes.

I live in one of the buildings behind the 14th Street IHOP, and no, the situation hasn't gotten much better. Several days will go by without much of a problem, and then the stench will begin again. Sometimes, like this morning, it will just be for an hour or two, but then there will be a couple of days when it is just never-ending. Right now, it's a low-level stale smell. My neighbors and I have repeatedly contacted CB6, the DEP, Rosie Mendez's office, you name it - IHOP is still stinking up the neighborhood. Please, please don't go to IHOP.

And...

I am an owner of one of the apartments that get's the brunt of the smell. I literally had to move out and find someone to rent the apartment too. No one would buy it. Everybody said it smells like bacon. The new tenant says it doesn't bother him so much, but I don't think he is home too much — plus he's been there for winter only, we'll see what happens when he starts opening his windows.
