Volunteers and donations sought for asylum seekers in the East Village this week

Photos and text by Stacie Joy

Here is information about the next distribution for asylum seekers temporarily staying at the former St. Brigid School on Avenue B and Seventh Street ... featuring an interfaith coalition with participating religious institutions including:

• St. Brigid/St. Emeric/Most Holy Redeemer
• Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish
• Graffiti Church
• Middle Middle Collegiate Church
Residents can drop off clothes and goods starting today ... plus tomorrow and Thursday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the St Brigid's rectory, 119 Avenue B between Seventh Street and Eighth Street.

The distribution will be on Thursday, June 29, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to attend and help. (A bonus if you speak French or Spanish.)

In-demand donations include adult clothing, blankets and bedding, backpacks, and shoes (especially chancletas). (Please note: no children or infants are at this location.)

Thanks for posting. Could one of the organizers please define “chancletas”? Google shows a wide variety under that name.

Great cause. Thanks for promoting.

My first words children’s picture books would make great donations. Also, primary Spanish/English picture dictionaries. My parents always enjoyed looking and reading primary age picture books. That’s how they practiced learned english when coming to LES from puerto rico

anyone know if it's possible to drop clothes off before 10 am tomorrow? and who is the best person to contact to volunteer help over the next few weeks?

Does anyone know if we're volunteering if we can bring donations at 3:30? 7th and B is kind of far and I'd rather not make two trips. Also, are all shoe/clothing sizes needed?

Does anyone know if maternity clothes are needed? I have a couple of bags I can donate.

Hi folks! Thanks for writing in, let me see if I can answer your questions. You cannot drop off donations before 10 am, the St. Brigid's rectory hours are 10 am until 1 pm, and they are doing us a kindness by allowing us to drop off supplies ahead of time.

Re: best person, I would say keep an eye on EVGrieve for future info. This is the only distro on the schedule for now, another date may become available at the end of July. To volunteer at the distro, please just show up at 7 & B at 3:30 pm on Thursday, June 29, and we'll get you sorted. And thank you!!

For the person who asked if they could just show up at 3:30 pm on Thursday with donations: Yes! Thank you. Re: sizes in clothes and shoes -- mostly men's supplies, and all sizes. Men's shorts, pants, sweats, tees, sweatshirts and shoes are all highly needed.

Re: maternity wear, no, this is not a site that needs maternity or baby/infant/children's supplies.

Thank you all again for wanting to assist. The people receiving these goods are incredible thankful.

I remember vaguely a school on the LES is collecting items for worm and children. Does anyone know of it and collection dates/times?

Do you need volunteers on Thursday to help sort the donations or just to work the distributions tables? Or both?

Anonymous said...

Both! You can select whichever job you prefer. And thank you!
