Local City Council Member Carlina Rivera is leaving her seat four months early, according to published reports.
Politico first reported the news of her resignation on Thursday.
She confirmed the report during an interview on NY1's "Inside City Hall" on Friday evening.
Rivera, who was term-limited after serving the neighborhood for the past eight years, will be leading the New York State Association for Affordable Housing. This trade association represents affordable housing developers.
"It's such a bittersweet moment for me," she told NY1's Bobby Cuza. "I have really loved the job and it's become a part of my identity in the best way possible."
She has not officially released a statement about her resignation.
There's no word about who (if anyone?) takes over her District 2 seat for the remainder of 2025.
In November, Harvey Epstein will face Republican nominee Jason Murillo in the District 2 Council race.

Good riddance. She always favored Big Real Estate over her constituents.- the Tech Hub, 3-4th Avenue Corridor landmark protection and the worst debacle - allowing the destruction of East River Park's 1,000 trees, sport fields and green space instead of honoring the long-negotiated and approved plan to build an 8' wall between the FDR and the park. And you might note that Kips Bay, her new home, has moving, retractable flood walls.
Man, she was all talk for the community. Now, she's leaving.
She's done little to nothing to make life better in the EV. Her resignation gives us a better chance for a more effective representation in the city council. Her early resignation proves how little she really cares about her job when she moves on to a bureaucratic nothing bugger of a job instead of fulfilling her job repping the EV.
good riddance
Nice way to sell out. The previous CEO made ~$375k for 26 hours work per week. (https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/134001946/202413179349305171/full)
She made a lot of money and connections. Affordable housing don't make me laugh.
Her resignation does not gives us a better chance for a more effective representation, it gives us no representation until 2026.
The FDR between Ave C and 20th St. has moving retractable flood walls.
"Not that Harvey, not that Epstein" - SNL
Identity politics won her 1st 2 terms. And I totally agree with the 1st 6 comments on this thread. And let me add she was VERY late to the game of the CF that was happening on the south of 14th Street between Ave A and 1st Ave.
The new park that is open is great. Losing the trees sucked.
There are two things written above that are incorrect. First, that she served the neighborhood for the last 8 years. That is nonsense. She served nobody but herself. Second, it states that she will now be involved in affordable housing. What a crock of shit that is. She spoke that lie 8 years ago when she was looking for votes. Then she did the exact opposite and went to bat for the big money pig developers. I don’t know where she lives but they should cut down all the trees in front of her house and build a cement wall around her house, just in case it rains
Please try a Republican to replace this self serving sellout
Seriously what do you have to lose?
Can it possibly be any worse?
The last thing we need is a republican. Are you not aware of what’s going on in our country?
Cool sense of humor, DJTJ.
No one remember her selling out governor island?
You clearly don't live in the neighborhood or you're just trolling.
And people wonder why people are cynical about politics.
Yes. They'll violently kidnap our neighbors off the streets and send them to camps.
Sadly CR turned out to be a hypocrite in so many ways.
She prioritised "open streets" legislation - which was supposed to be for Covid and allow space on local side streets.
Instead "Open" Streets" has been allowed to wreck bus transit/bus access - numerous buses are forced to re-route as bus route streets are closed to benefit bicycles and brunch.
And yet CR insists mass transit is essential.
Truly unbelievable.
This is one reason why Democrats have lost faith.
CR and others act just like the GOP :(
She sat in a meeting about the challenges that the asylum seekers faced in the East Village and she glossed over every point that we made. We spent time highlighting how challenging it was for the homeless populations to have no bathroom in the park for such a long time, and she glossed over that too. She then patted herself and her team on the back and didn't do 1 thing to address the issues we had raised. Absolutely useless on every level.

East River Park is from Montgomery Street to E. 12th Street.
Not gonna miss her.
Glad to be rid of her, as she's always been a waste of space who wasn't interested in anything about her "job." (I'm not surprised she's going to be paid $$$$$ in her new venture, b/c IMO that's her real interest: MONEY.) Add in her many lies about what she "valued" and would support - all of it has just been a lot of hot air!
She's been such a complete non-entity for her constituents (of which I am one) that I couldn't have picked her out of a lineup.
Don't let the door smack you in the butt.on the way out, Carlina. You have truly been a sell-out. And we will continue to pay the the price as we watch from behind fences as hundreds of healthy trees are cut down at East River Park as that huge, polluting, and unnecessary boondoggle crawls on.
Lmao. Favoring big real estate.
Open Streets are a good thing actually and should have been maintained
