Per the Parks
website, this is "the oldest sculpture in the New York City Parks collection. It was modeled by Henry Kirke Brown (1814-1886) and dedicated in 1856."

Great! NOW do the Independence Flagstaff, also in Union Sq. "this flagstaff commemorates the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence" is really dirty. There are cobwebs and grime on the bas-reliefs and the state placques around the base are obscured by dirt, gum, and whatever else NYers have on their shoes.

they are waxing it to protect from the bird poop, you have to heat it with a blowtorch to melt it. Poor interns in the heat
