ATM FYI

From earlier this week... DOT reps placed these ATM flyers around (seen above on Avenue B)... reminding merchants/landlords that ATMs are not permitted on NYC sidewalks.

Per the signage, ATM fines are $2,500, as of 2011... and now, property owners "may be charged an additional $5,000 for every five-day period that the property owner remains in violation."

Report: Father-son bandits busted for alleged ATM heists

The NYPD reportedly arrested Brooklyn residents James Allen, 72, and his 45-year-old son, Ed Allen, early Wednesday morning after allegedly taking an ATM on Clinton near Rivington. They were eventually caught in a stolen van on 52nd Street after a chase.

Police believe they may be behind a spate of ATM thefts of late, including one from outside Yankee Deli on Avenue C at 11th Street on Aug. 14. In this case, surveillance video shows a van pulling the ATM from the storefront, which was said to cause $10,000 in damage to the deli.

According to the Post, the senior Allen has 11 prior arrests while Ed has 53 prior arrests. Previous charges for both include assault and grand larceny.

Reader report: More about being aware of ATM skimming

An EV reader has a follow-up to our July 19 post "Beware ATM Skimming these Beware ATM Skimming signs say."

It seems as if a friend and I were both taken by this scam recently. We've both woken up to fraud alerts from Chase in the past week that our debit cards have been used elsewhere in the City.

Given that we both reside in Alphabet City, frequent the same places, and were still in possession of our cards, it suggests that it was indeed a scamming operation to steal the card data and produce dummy cards. Chase confirmed as much over the phone when I spoke with them. I'm very careful about using my card, so wherever the operation is it must be pretty stealth. We think it happened somewhere along Avenue C.

Beware ATM Skimming these Beware ATM Skimming signs say

Apparently the NYPD wants us to beware aware of ATM skimming. We spotted a dozen or so flyers around the neighborhood.

About five years ago ATM skimming in the East Village made the news.

Anyway, beware! And just one more reason to only carry Krugerrand gold coins like we do. (Admittedly, the exchange rate sucks, especially at bars.)

Thanks to @fnytv for the tip and photo.

Exclusive: The Bowery to receive its first Monimax 4000W wall mount ATM

You may have seen this hanging on the Bowery near East Fourth Street.

This. Not the headless mannequins.

EV Grieve has learned exclusively that this will soon be a real live Monimax 4000W wall mount ATM. As you probably know, the Monimax 4000W wall mount offers unprecedented deployment flexibility while supporting a robust set of traditional ATM service offerings. It is ideal for sites where real estate is at a premium, such as on the Bowery. According to Nautilus Hyosung officials, the makers of the Monimax 4000W, "the Monimax 4000W delivers total cost of ownership results in a reliable, secure platform."

Indeed.

And now you will be the first to know how to use the Monimax 4000W with this almost interactive chart.

Please note that Cincinnati Bengals fans from Phebe's will be charged a $10 service fee during game days.

Avenue C ATM deemed 'unauthorized'

The DOT has left notices here in front of 131 Avenue C between Eighth and Ninth Streets stating that this ATM is "encroaching onto the city sidewalk." The ATM sits between Babel, the hookah place, and Summit, the fancy drinks place. The letter is addressed to Babel's landlord...

I'm guessing this wasn't the only ATM cited... one of the other 47,891 ATMs near here likely encroach the city sidewalks as well...

Avenue B gets crucial new ATM

Speaking of Avenue B... a new ATM recently went in here near Houston...

...a sorely needed necessity since workers removed the ATM (or was it stolen?) from in front of Croxley's...

Meanwhile, at least 6-7 ATMs remain in the next two blocks...

We wrote a post on the Avenue B ATMs in March 2009... and, in the comments, Slum Goddess floated the bestest-ever theory on the proliferation of ATMs hereabouts:

These so called "ATM's" are obviously beings from a far away planet who have been studying earthlings habits for many many years now. They are multiplying and joining forces in preparation for the big takeover of earth.

You've been warned!
