Kissaki debuts on the Bowery this week
Kissaki opens on Wednesday here at 319 Bowery between First Street and Second Street. (We first reported on this arrival back on Sept. 3.)
Mark Garcia, a former chef and partner of sushi bar Gaijin in Astoria, is among those behind this venture that features a 16-seat Omakase bar and a small dining area. There's a cocktail lounge coming soon.
According to the Kissaki website, they'll offer lunch and dinner service. The omakase menu in the evening runs $160 for 12 pieces of seasonal nigiri, three kaiseki-style prepared plates and one dessert.
As previously reported, the restaurant is the first retail tenant for the former Amato Opera. In January 2009, Anthony Amato, the company's 88-year-old founder, announced that he had sold the building that was home to the opera since 1964. Amato Opera staged its last performance in May 2009. (Earlier history: The four-story brick building was a cigar factory from 1899 to 1926.)
Steve Croman bought No. 319 in December 2008 for $3.7 million. The retail space had been on and off the market since at least 2012.
The retail listing had originally asked $34,995. A post on @TradedNY noted the 1,800-square-foot space went for $200 per square foot.
No. 319 also features three luxury residences, with monthly rents between $8,995 and $10,995.

2nd acts: Sushi counter for the former Amato Opera on the Bowery
The former Amato Opera building at 319 Bowery may finally have its first (full-time) retail business...
Reps for Kissaki Omakase will appear before CB3's SLA committee on Sept. 16 for a full liquor license for the space...
One of the applicants was an executive chef/partner at Gaijin in Astoria. Plans here call for a sushi counter with proposed hours of noon to midnight Sunday through Thursday, with a 1 a.m. close Friday and Saturday. (Find more details via their online questionnaire.)

Retail space in the former Amato Opera House seeking to the tune of $35k monthly
The condo conversion of the former Amato Opera House at 319 Bowery creeps along (the work permits arrived here in October 2014) ...
The gut rehab comes courtesy of landlord Steven Croman, who's facing suits in both civil and criminal court. While there isn't any word on the residential portion of the building just yet, the signs did arrive last week for the storefront...
Per the listing:
Retail space for rent in the historic Amato Opera House. 1, 500 sq. ft plus garden and basement with 19 foot ceilings. Food OK.
Conveniently located near B, D, F, M & 6 train lines as well as M103 and M21 bus lines. Steps from some of the city's best shopping, restaurants and nightlife, neighbors include Patagonia Surf, Saxon + Parole, and Momofuku Ko.
Asking monthly rent: $34,995.
That's an ambitious ask considering the revolving door of businesses along this corridor of late.
Here's a look at a rendering for the retail space from a different broker circa 2012...

Penthouse comes into view at the former Amato Opera on the Bowery
Apparently there will be a penthouse at 319 Bowery after all. Landlord Steve Croman received DOB approval last September to convert the former Amato Opera house between East First Street and East Second Street into a commercial and residential building.
The original plans showed three residential units above the ground-floor retail space, with a penthouse level. The approved permits that we saw later didn't list a penthouse level…
However, there is an amended permit dated July 8 that includes a penthouse, part of the fourth floor apartment.
In any event, you can now see this top level from the street…

Construction watch: 319 Bowery
Landlord Steve Croman received DOB approval last September to convert the former Amato Opera house at 319 Bowery into a commercial and residential building.
Documents show that there will be one residence on each floor above the retail space here between East Second Street and East First Street.
Workers have been on site since the fall… and the other day, EVG reader Roger took a look inside the open door ...
… to see what was going on with the interior. Per Roger: "The photos don't show much but I thought it was interesting that the place is getting completely gutted."
We're unsure about the incoming retail space here. We'd seen several listing for it. One at Croman's 9300 site says that the storefront — with the rent listed at $34,995 — is rented.
Amato Opera ended its long run on May 31, 2009.

In recent years, new landlord Steve Croman had applied to convert the theater at 319 Bowery between East First Street and East Second Street into a commercial and residential building. Now according to DOB records, the city approved the plans on Monday. Plans show three residential units above the ground-floor retail space, which is still on the market.

Plans originally called for a penthouse here... though we didn't see any mention of that in the approved permits.

Let's look at the new rendering for the former Amato Opera building on the Bowery
On the Bowery, the Amato Opera building has sat vacant since the company closed on May 31, 2009. In January 2009, Anthony Amato, the company’s 88-year-old founder, announced that he had sold the building that the Opera has called home since 1964. (He and his wife Sally, who died 12 years ago, started Amato in 1948.)
Through these years, we've pointed out the various for rent signs that have adorned the building. We even pointed out the most recent rendering people (scalies!) that the broker was using...
Very realistic — particularly the texting zombie walking right into traffic on the Bowery.
But that dose of realism wasn't really working. We need to see... the future! Not to mention some hot rendering ass.
Seems about right.

As the for rent signs turn at the former Amato Opera
Here we are at the Amato Opera on the Bowery, which has sat empty since the company closed on May 31, 2009.
A mini recap since the Amato closed: In July 2010, CB3 gave its blessing for the owners of the V Bars to open a "bar/restaurant/theater experience" in the former Amato Opera on the Bowery. However, those plans fell through. The space was for rent for $22,500 a month... then the whole building went for sale for $6.95 million. Now, we're up to our third or fourth real-estate rep...
The latest sign is now up ... RKF has the listing...
No price mentioned. A few details from the listing:
Likely won't be sitting empty for another three years.
Last thing... the rendering people (scalies!) seem quite life-like:
Particularly the texting zombie walking right into traffic on the Bowery...

A sign switcheroo yesterday at the Amato opera
Yesterday, we reported that the Amato Opera building on the Bowery is now for sale for $6.95 million. The space was previously available as a rental for $22,500 a month.
And workers quickly changed over the sign yesterday to reflect the sale.
Curbed reminded us yesterday that the building was sold back in December 2008 for $3.7 million. Will be a tidy little profit for the owner once the building sells. Per Curbed, "319 Bowery NY, LLC" closed on the property in 2008, and that LLC shares an address with Croman Real Estate, also known as 9300 Realty. Steve Croman has been named to the Voice’s 10 Worst Landlords List.

The Amato Opera building is for sale now for $6.95 million
First, a mini recap: Last July, CB3 gave its blessing for the owners of the V Bars to open a "bar/restaurant/theater experience" in the former Amato Opera on the Bowery. However, as DNAinfo reported in late March, no work has been done on the space and its remains on the market. NYCRS has the listing at $22,500 a month.
So! This weekend, an Amato Opera listing appeared at Corcoran. Its price: $6.95 million. Here's the listing:
The Amato Opera house was an historic property founded in 1964. The original building was constructed in 1899. It was the home to the celebrated opera company for nearly a half-century since before closing in May 2009. It is a four-story building, which was converted into a theatre with rehearsal and storage space, 107-seats, a 20-foot stage and a tiny orchestra pit. It measures approximately 5,429 sq., is a four-story masonry building which stands on a 22'33" X 93' lot, and measures 22'4" wide by 84' deep and c. 7'5" wide at the rear. The property, located in a C6-1 Commercial District (R7 Residential District equivalent), is well suited for commercial, residential or mix use. The building has additional air rights. Property shark states a maximum of 9,576 sf and/or a maximum height of 85 ft. The building is currently 52.4 ft high. All due diligence has to be done by buyer and we are only providing information publicly displayed on property shark with no guarantees. 319 Bowery is between Bleecker and Bond. The neighborhood is now lined with luxury hotels, fashionable restaurants and stylish fashion stores. Bring your architect and your imagination and don't miss this excellent opportunity.

Life after the Amato Opera
In January 2009, Anthony Amato announced that he was closing the Amato Opera after more than 60 years. Amato also said that he was selling the building at 319 Bowery that he had called home since 1962.
As he told the Times, "I'm 88 years old, and I'm a little tired," he said. "I have a few years left."
However shocking the news may have been to the public, the announcement wasn't a complete surprise to some company members.
"There were some rumors swirling among the cast in the late fall of 2009," Melissa Gerstein, an East Village resident and an Amato member since 2004, told me on the phone. "We noted his health. He was just tired. He still had a lot of live. He wanted to do some other things to do with his time."
And then the cast began to talk about the future.
"There were a lot of people who had been involved with the company for 30-40 years. There were really sad about not being able to go to the Amato every week to perform," Gerstein said.
So a small group of cast members continued talking about launching Amore Opera to fill that void in producing homespun, inexpensive productions and keeping the Amato spirit alive.
Once the members had everything in order — a board and budget, for starters — they approached Amato with their idea.
He gave them an enthusiastic endorsement.
Tonight, the Amore Opera finishes up their second season with a production of "Carmen," which runs through May 29 at the Connelly Theatre at 220 E. Fourth St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.
For Amato, Gerstein said that he was extremely pleased that people who he loved and cared about were going to be continuing his legacy.
And what does Anthony Amato mean to her?
"He is a very warm and giving person. He’s just in it for the music, and no other purpose. For a young person like myself coming in — I was a year out of graduate school, which was tough and rigorous — jumping into a company like Amato, with a fun, unstructured way of doing things… He molded each performer into the person that he knew they could become up on stage."

Breaking: Workers clearing out Amato Opera on the Bowery
Last July, CB3 gave its blessing for the owners of the V Bars to open a "bar/restaurant/theater experience" in the former Amato Opera on the Bowery.
However, as DNAinfo recently reported, no work has been done on the space and its remains on the market.
Which is why we're curious about this photo @sandwichboarder sent along of workers clearing out the space this afternoon... Perhaps this is the start of the "theater experience"?
