118 1st Avenue still for rent

Vacant Storefront Week continues... new for-rent signs recently arrived on another prime corner spot — 118 First Ave. at Seventh Street.

The asking rent for the space — 900 square feet with another 900 in the basement — is $13,000, per the listing at KSR.

Golden Food Market closed here in the summer of 2017 after 35 years in business. According to a reader who spoke with the Golden Food Market (aka Ali's) staff, the lease was up for renewal and the new landlord wanted an increase that was more than the store could manage.

As for the new landlord, an LLC with a West 11th Street address bought the building in the spring of 2017 for $5.8 million, per public records.

A tapas-wine bar was in the works for the space in April 2018, but those plans never advanced past the Community Board stage.

Restaurant in the works for former Golden Food Market on 1st Avenue and 7th Street

A restaurant appears to be the next tenant for the former Golden Food Market space (118 First Ave.) on the northeast corner of First Avenue and Seventh Street...

The restaurant owners have already affixed the CB3 notices on the front door to show they are on the April SLA committee docket for a full liquor license...

CB3 has not yet released the April schedule of meetings just yet.

Golden Food Market closed last July after 35 years in business. The staff had said that the lease was up for renewal and the new landlord wanted an increase that was more than they could manage.

Corner space at 118 1st Ave. for rent

The owner of the building on the northeast corner of First Avenue and Seventh Street has put up a for rent sign in the corner space ... which has already drawn some commentary...

... to coincide with the commentary that has been on the front door since the previous tenant, Golden Food Market, closed at the end of July after 35 years in business...

The storefront listing isn't online. So there isn't any word of the asking rent.

Ali Fardos, whose family owned Golden Food Market, also runs East Village Organic a few storefronts to the north on First Avenue.

An EVG reader shared this upon learning the news yesterday: "Ali and staff are the nicest people around. The prices were fair, but most memorably, they stayed open all during and after Sandy. I think I remember that they were lit by hanging kerosene lanterns. They will be missed and fondly remembered."
