The Lyric Diner has closed once again in Gramercy Park

Heading out of the neighborhood for a quick post... the second time around didn't work so well for the Lyric Diner on Third Avenue at East 22nd Street. The restaurant recently closed... and the for rent sign has now arrived.

A little recap.

In August 2012, the Lyric owners decided to shut down the diner... they reopened the space as Taverna, a white tablecloth Greek restaurant. That concept lasted six months. The owners then decided to reopen the Lyric in October 2013.

Lyric Diner now back open at former Lyric Diner space on 3rd Avenue

As you may recall!

Taverna, the Greek restaurant that took over the Lyric Diner space on Third Avenue at East 22nd Street, closed back in August after just six months in business. The same owners closed Lyric Diner during the summer of 2012.

The owners had been revamping the space to return it to its old diner self... and the Lyric Diner 2.0 reopened yesterday, as several EVG readers have noted. Said one: "I live across 3rd Avenue and saw the open sign last night... went in to check it out and they are firing on all cylinders!"

Here's a look inside Tuesday night right before the grand reopening...

Lyric Diner returning to former Lyric Diner space

The latest in the Lyric Diner saga.

First, a quick recap!

Taverna, the Greek restaurant that took over the Lyric Diner space on Third Avenue at 22nd Street, closed a few weeks ago after just six months in business. The same owners closed Lyric Diner last August.

However, as a reader notes in the above photo, the Lyric is returning.

pcvstBee first reported this development on Saturday. No word just yet on an opening date.

And it's probably a good thing that Taverna kept up some Lyric Diner signage upon opening...

Lyric Diner replacement closed for now on Third Avenue

EVG reader Patti passes along word that Taverna, the Greek restaurant that took over the Lyric Diner space on Third Avenue at 22nd Street, has apparently closed after six months.

There's paper over the windows ... and no note on the front door ... and no word of a closure on the restaurant's Facebook page or website. The Lyric closed last August without a note... though one appeared a few days later... Taverna was opened by the same ownership in February.

pcvstBee first reported on Taverna's closure on Tuesday.

Lyric Diner Coffee Shop neon survives renovation on Third Avenue

Back in August, we noted that the Lyric Diner on Third Avenue at 22nd Street had closed for renovations... Our friends at the pcvstBEE blog report that the owners reopened the space this week... it's now a Greek restaurant called Taverna.

Some good news. Despite the major renovations, the owners are keeping the cool Lyric Diner Coffee Shop neon on the East 22nd Street side, as this photo from @ThingsWendySees shows...

As for their food, you can check out their new menu here.

[Updated] Has the Lyric Diner closed on Third Avenue?

EVG reader @Sheba passed along word earlier today that the Lyric Diner on Third Avenue at 22nd Street appears closed... Several other people have tweeted this... there is brown paper over the windows and a large CLOSED sign. We called, though no one answered the phone... it's possible that this is just a late-summer clean up/renovation, though you'd think they'd leave a note ...

I haven't been here in a few years... I heard that the quality had slipped... I recall that they served egg creams and had something on the menu called the Twin Tower ice cream soda...

Updated: Per KB in the comments... the Lyric is only closed for renovations...
