RIP Edgar Artur Cajamarca

Sad news from Miss Lily's 7A on the corner of Seventh Street and Avenue A. Edgar Artur Cajamarca, who worked in the kitchen as a prep cook, died on March 24 due to complications from COVID-19. He was 46.

Here's more via an email from the Miss Lily's team (thank you to the readers who shared this):

We are very sad to announce the passing of our colleague and friend Edgar Artur Cajamarca...

Born in Ecuador on April 23, 1973, Edgar moved to New York in 2000. He joined Miss Lily’s in June 2016 as a delivery man at the Houston St. location before moving over to Miss Lily's 7A where he worked first as a dishwasher and then was promoted to prep chef.

A humble, hard working, much loved member of the kitchen crew, he was always a great team player. Edgar’s first love centered around his family. He was a devoted father and son. He was also an avid Barcelona FC fan and well known for his notable commitment to riding his bicycle to and from work to his home in Brooklyn, no matter what the weather.

Edgar is survived by his children Johanna, Paul and Christian, the children’s mother Maria, and his mother Maria Chunchi.

Edgar was working on building a house for his mother in Ecuador and if we could raise the $10k to fund its completion that would be incredible. Most of our team have already contributed and with only a few thousand dollars to go we are reaching out to our community to see if we can reach the goal. Every dollar donated would go directly to completing his mother's house ...

Please take care and be safe.

To date, they've nearly doubled their $10,000 fundraising goal.

Miss Lily's 7A Cafe closed for service on March 15 for the duration of the health crisis.

130 E. 7th St. is for sale

From the EVG tip line comes this listing for 130 E. Seventh St., the 7-floor building on the southwest corner of Avenue A.

Marcus & Millichap is the broker, though the link is via Loopnet. Some details:

130 East 7th Street offers investors a unique opportunity to acquire a corner elevator loft mixed-use building in the heart of the East Village with strong in place cash-flow. Miss Lily’s, a popular Caribbean style restaurant occupies the ground floor. There is shared office space occupying the second floor followed by five floor-through loft apartments. All of apartments are three bedrooms aside from the penthouse unit which is a spacious four bedrooms duplex apartment with a 1,300 Square Foot private outdoor space.

And from the investment summary...

[Click to go big]

Curiously, the summary notes: "The other ground floor retail (7th Street side) is occupied by Avant Garden. They are on a lease that expires in 2088..." 2088? Helluva lease!

Anyway, the building's asking price: $22.95 million.

And here's part of an EVG post from August 2016 about the address...

---

The 7-floor building on the southwest corner has been through a luxury makeover in recent years. The new residential rentals were fetching $16,995 and $14,995. Longtime corner restaurant 7A closed in January 2014... and later replaced by Miss Lily's.

Public records show that the University of the Streets sold the building to Park Corner Development, LLC in September 2011 for $5 million.

After 46 years of music and arts programs here, the University of the Streets cleared out of the second floor in April 2015 and relocated to the Bronx.

The address was home to L.W. Schwenk… and here's a photo dated July 24, 1914, titled "Depositors at failed bank."

Miss Lily's 7A Cafe opens Monday for dinner

[Photo from Monday by Bobby Williams]

As we've been reporting, the former 7A space will be home to Miss Lily's 7A Cafe here on East Seventh Street and Avenue A. The space is the second outpost of restauranteur Paul Salmon's Miss Lily's complex on West Houston Street.

The folks at Miss Lily's tweeted out the news yesterday that they'll open Monday…

Here's more about what to expect via the Miss Lily's website:

Miss Lily’s 7A is open for dinner daily with all day-breakfast, lunch, brunch and late night in the former 7A Cafe space in the East Village. The new 7A outpost of Miss Lily’s embodies the best elements of Miss Lily’s, Melvin’s Juice Box and the Variety Shop, while paying homage to 7A’s storied past.

The menu features the Miss Lily’s classics, new dishes that celebrate the former 7A Cafe and the restaurant’s Jamaican roots, as well as a weekend late night menu to cater to the neighborhood’s buzzing nightlife.

The bar features a full selection of wine, beer and cocktails, with a focus on Caribbean rum spirits, and a frozen daiquiri slushy machine. An outpost of Melvin’s Juice Box anchors the bar at Miss Lily's 7A, serving Melvin’s 100% organic, incredibly tasty, made-to-order juices. Additionally, Miss Lily’s signature sauces and the Kingston kettle-style potato chips in Curry, Jerk, and Jerk BBQ are for sale.

The new space takes inspiration from the early 1980’s Memphis “anti-design movement” in Italy – whose signature clashing colors and asymmetrical shapes became an expression of anti-conformity in the East Village’s punk scene. Bright colors and wild, clashing patterns evoke an 80’s Jamaican diner vibe, with elements like the black-and-blue linoleum checkerboard floors and wood-paneled walls that nod to the fast food American diner of the 50s. African wax print textiles, Missoni-esque velour upholstery, and brightly colored neon fruit baskets stay true to the much-loved aesthetic of Miss Lily’s.

The restaurant’s façade recaptures a sense of the neighborhood’s rich spirit and diverse history, reviving the vintage look and feel of the once-popular East Village Bodega storefronts that have all but disappeared. Original hand painted signs by Brooklyn Artist studio Farewell designs and a vintage awning pay loving homage to this once ubiquitous archetype.

The Cafe will start with dinner service before expanding the hours in the coming weeks.

The continued exterior transformation of the 7A space

Here's how the incoming Miss Lily's 7A Cafe was looking late afternoon yesterday.

As previously reported, the new space here on Avenue A and East Seventh Street will be a combo of Melvin's Juice Box and Miss Lily's on West Houston ... mixed with the cafe ambiance of 7A.

No word on an opening date just yet.

The Miss Lily's 7A Cafe sidewalk awning is going up

Last Thursday, we got our first glimpse of the new sign at the former 7A space — Miss Lily's 7A Cafe ... this morning, workers here on Avenue A and East Seventh Street have been installing the sidewalk awning...

The former 7A will apparently be called Miss Lily's 7A Cafe

It appears that last night's storm brought down the tarp protecting the new sign at the former 7A space... revealing that the new place will be called Miss Lily's 7A Cafe here on East Seventh Street and Avenue A ...

Various EVG tipsters told us previously that the place will be the second outpost of restauranteur Paul Salmon's Miss Lily's along with a Melvin's Juice Box.

A rep told Eater last month that the new place will "pay homage to the cafe history of 7A," but it will also have "elements of Melvin's Juice Box and Miss Lily's."

Looks pretty accurate by the look of the new signage.

7A closed after nearly 30 years on Jan. 26.
