Second Avenue Subway now a Good Guys Burger

Yesterday, workers quickly dismantled the Subway on Second Avenue at East Ninth Street... and a reader noted that they worked into the night to unveil....

... that this space is becoming a Good Guys location...

Are the Good Guys related to the Five Guys?

Another East Village Subway closes

Multiple readers have pointed us to the Subway on Second Avenue near East Ninth Street, where workers removed the sign and gutted the sandwich shop today. This makes the second Subway to close in the East Village this past month. The Subway on First Avenue near East 13th Street shut down in October.

Did a Subway close on First Avenue?

A tweet from yesterday.

We hadn't noticed. Sure enough. Late yesterday afternoon.

We called the restaurant. The line went dead after 10 or so rings.

There aren't any notes on the front door. But there is one sign of doomsday:

The Wacky Wok menu!

Perhaps this closure is temporary. (But wouldn't you leave a sign or something telling people that, say, due to a plumbing issue, the restaurant will be temporarily closed?)

Meantime, do you remember the last time that a franchise closed around here? Maybe the Dunkin' Donuts on Second Avenue?

We're running with the Subway signs of the night

In the rain and darkness of night, workers installed the Subway sign that arrived earlier this afternoon here at 108 First Ave.

Breaking: Subway awning arrives at 108 First Ave.

This just in from EV Grieve reader Joe. Here at 108 First Ave., home of the former Intervideo Electronics between Sixth Street and Seventh Street.

In this instance, it's OK to weep in public.

There's no stopping the Subway invasion

On Thursday, we counted up the number of Subway (sandwich shops) in the East Village ... (find the answer here...)

Last night, EV Grieve reader Chis F. passed along this shot of yet another Subway setting up shop that we hadn't noticed ... A little out of bounds, but close enough at Essex and Stanton...

So just how many Subways are there in the East Village?

Last Thursday, we broke the news that another Subway sandwich shop was opening here, this time on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...

There was some debate among readers about just how many Subways there are in the East Village. Being investigative hyperlocal journalists, we investigated...

1) Avenue B near 14th Street...

2) First Avenue near 13th Street

3) Second Avenue near Ninth Street

4) 14th Street near Second Avenue

5) Fourth Avenue near 12th Street

6) The Bowery near Great Jones

7) Houston between Avenue A and Avenue B

Christ, we're probably missing one... but between Houston and 14th, and Fourth Avenue to Avenue D, we think this is it. Seven. With one coming soon.

And the one at 108 First Ave. is already on the Subway website...

How many more Subways will arrive here become the apocalypse?

Yet another Subway opening in the East Village

So, you remember that computer repair shop-plasma TV installers-DVD rental place on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street? Yeah, Intervideo Electronics. They closed in June.

When the "for rent" signs went up during the summer, we were filled with The Dread... and it turns out that this was all for good reason.

Last night, a tipster told us something that no one wants to hear: A Subway (sandwich shop) is opening here at 108 First Ave. Workers on the scene confirmed it to the tipster.

And a look at DOB documents doubly confirms it...

How many more times will we see this: Cluttered little mom-and-pop shop closes; chain store opens.

So now, the east side of the street will stack up like this:
Saifee Hardware
Ricky's
Whatever takes over for the shuttered Polonia
Subway
McDonald's
The best newish bar in the neighborhood
Dunkin' Donuts

Subway looking for ways to make you fatter, jumpier

So on Monday, the Subway here on the Bowery started advertising some new items... Coffee! And! Pizza(?).

And why are there still grand opening signs up? This location opened at the end of 2009.

And just so you'd have to notice, the Subwayers hung the notices from the sidewalk shed outside the Whitehouse next door...

Not sure if other participating Subway shops are offering these items.

To be honest, I did walk into the new Subway on Avenue B over the weekend. For jolleys. And, the weirdest thing — one foot off Avenue B and it felt as if I'd been transported to the basement of Penn Station. I swear I even heard someone mention Ronkonkoma. I quickly left.

Spotted on Avenue B: Subway Sandwich signage

As we reported last week, a Subway Sandwich shoppe is coming soon to Avenue B between 13th Street and 14th Street. And as the photo shows, that wasn't a bad dream.
