These East Village institutions are now currently closed

After a to-go sandwich service on St. Patrick's Day, McSorley's is now closed over at 15 E. Seventh St. for the duration of the coronavirus outbreak ...

Meanwhile, Veselka, 144 Second Ave. at Ninth Street, decided to shut down operations starting yesterday. Here's part of their Instagram post:

Veselka has closed indefinitely. That was not a fun decision to make, but it was an easy one. The safety of our staff and customers comes first.

Rest assured that we’ll be back! We may be suspending operations before some other places, but we’ll start boiling the borscht as soon as the scientists and regulators give us the all-clear.

And B&H, 127 Second Ave., is also closed now. Tuesday was their last day, in which they were giving out some menu items.

Their future seems less clear, and there is now a crowdfunding campaign in place to help them in the interim.

Happy trails to the 'Queen of Borscht'

Malgorzata Sibilski — aka the "Queen of Borscht" — retired from Veselka on Dec. 1 after 30 years at the restaurant on Second Avenue and Ninth Street... Veselka paid tribute to her today on Instagram...

In January, Veselka was honored by the Columbia Aging Center — part of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health — for its efforts to hire and retain workers over the age of 50.

It's 2 a.m., do you know where your potato pancakes are?

The jazz band Onyx Collective have released "2AM at Veselka," a track from their upcoming album Lower East Suite Part Three. (Parts One and Two came out last year.)

Other tracks from the record, out on June 15, include blog-worthy headlines such as "There Goes the Neighborhood," "Battle of the Bowery" and "Delancey Dilemma."

Band leader Isaiah Barr said that the record is — per Fader — inspired by a tumultuous period in the group's life after being forced out of their original practice space due to rising rent.

'Freak water problem' KOs Veselka till Monday

Tough break for Veselka this holiday weekend. The restaurant on Second Avenue and Ninth Street will be closed until at least Monday afternoon.

Veselka management shared their status on social media:

Due to a freak water problem, we have to give the experts time to make repairs — and they’re estimating that we’ll be UP AND RUNNING by the AFTERNOON OF MONDAY, APRIL 2nd. (And, no, this isn’t our April Fools prank.)

Veselka reopened lat this afternoon... and as a commenter noted, this turned out to be a closure via the Health Department following an inspection Friday that yielded 48 violation points.

Veselka among the first food vendors to anchor the Market Line at Essex Crossing

[Rendering by SHoP Architects]

The developers of Essex Crossing yesterday announced some of the food vendors that will help anchor the Market Line, a 150,000-square-foot retail destination. Several familiar names will be part of the first phase of the market, including outposts of Ippudo and Veselka.

Here's Eater with more:

Anchored among three buildings underground near Essex and Delancey streets, with window access that looks up to the sidewalk level, the Market Line at development Essex Crossing will unfurl with a three-phase rollout.

By fall, it will house more than 40 food vendors picked to complement the city landmark, the 70-plus year old Essex Street Market — with Shopsins, Saxelby Cheesemongers, and Luis Meat Kitchen among vendors making the trek to the new complex, slated to open in conjunction with the phase-one Market Line purveyors.

And you can head to The Lo-Down for more on the other vendors.

As previously reported, the Market Line will stretch over three city blocks. An estimated two-thirds of the retail spaces will be devoted to food. Per The New York Times: "The market’s developers are already comparing it to world-class establishments like the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul; Boqueria in Barcelona, Spain; and Borough Market in London."

This will be Veselka's second attempt at opening an outpost away from the mothership on Second Avenue and Ninth Street. Velselka Bowery closed in 2013 after a 17-month at Avalon Bowery Place.

Veselka honored for its workplace practices with employees over the age of 50

[All photos by Dorian Block]

Veselka is one of 13 NYC businesses that the Columbia Aging Center — part of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health — is honoring today for its efforts to hire and retain workers over the age of 50.

I asked Tom Birchard, the longtime owner of the diner on Second Avenue at Ninth Street, for his reaction to the recognition. From our email exchange:

Honestly hiring and retaining an older work force isn’t something that we’ve done consciously or as a matter of policy. When I first started working at Veselka in the late 1960s, the small staff was comprised almost entirely of older Eastern European women who lived in the neighborhood. They were incredibly hard working and very reliable.

When I took over the business in the mid 1970s, I just naturally continued to seek and hire similar type people, many of whom came to us through word-of-mouth from the existing staff. In general, we’ve found that older people are more reliable, more stable and more loyal to their workplace so they tend to stay for longer periods.

We have a soup cook who has been with us for 30-plus years who is extremely devoted to her work. When I hired her she lived down the street from Veselka and walked half a block to work every day. As their family grew, she and her husband bought a home in Perth Amboy, N.J. So she has been commuting by bus and train every day since they moved. In spite of the long distance and difficult commute, she comes to work on time every day without complaint.

One of her younger co-workers commented that even a war would not keep her from showing up and making her borscht. She and I are the same age, 71, so I guess I have a special place in my heart for mature people and I especially appreciate the opportunity to continue to do the work I love.

A rep for the Columbia Aging Center listed several reasons (many of the practices benefit all workers regardless of age) about what makes Veselka, which opened in 1954, such a good employer of people 50 and over.

Those practices include strong benefits, opportunities for advancement, responsiveness to employees’ ideas to improve the work environment, a culture and atmosphere that demonstrates workers are valued, educational opportunities and flexible work arrangements.

Specifically, Veselka offers health insurance to its employees and pays 60 percent of the cost of it, which the Columbia rep said is unusual in the restaurant business. They also have a profit-sharing program, paid vacation time and a meal plan that lets employees eat whatever they want for $2.50 a meal. In addition, Veselka offers opportunities for advancement. For instance, prep cooks have risen up the ranks, including one who is now their executive chef. Veselka paid to send him to culinary school.

Said Birchard: "We are honored to be considered for this recognition but we have also been honored over the years to have had the privilege of working with some incredible people."

Hey, it's National Pierogi Day

In observance of National Pierogi Day today, Veselka is serving an order (any variety) for $5 all day long.

The restaurant on Second Avenue and East Ninth Street makes 3,000 pierogis by hand every day (according to Veselka).

Or maybe you could pick some up to take home from East Village Meat Market on Second Avenue... and Polish G. I. Delicatessen on First Avenue.

Veselka is free from its sidewalk bridge

After nearly four and a half months, workers have removed the sidewalk bridge from the building that houses Veselka on Second Avenue and East Ninth Street...

Back in late April, Veselka owner Tom Birchard told us that several small pieces of masonry fell off the building… and the building's landlord quickly had a crew erect a sidewalk bridge ahead of the repair work… unfortunately, the work wasn't completed quite as quickly, and the restaurant's sidewalk cafe was under cover for the late spring and the entire summer.

A sidewalk bridge now wraps around Veselka

On Saturday morning, we noticed that workers were erecting a sidewalk bridge around the building that houses Veselka on Second Avenue and East Ninth Street.

We asked Veselka owner Tom Birchard what happened. He tells us that several small pieces of masonry fell off the building on Thursday. They quickly notified the landlord, whose contractor started putting the sidewalk bridge into place on Friday.

"The landlord assures us that repairs will take place as quickly as possible but it may take a month just to get the necessary permits to start work," Birchard says. "Worst possible time of year for this to happen."

The sidewalk seating was able to return after workers finished the bridge.

Veselka celebrating its 60th anniversary with FREE FOOD on Monday night

Veselka has been celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Back in the summer, the restaurant at 144 Second Ave. (at East Ninth Street) turned prices on some items back to 1954. (Surprise! There were lines!)

Now on Monday night from 6 to 11, Veselka is getting rid of its tables and serving free food. Per the invite: "Mirth and Mingling Strongly Encouraged!"

As the Veselka anniversary invite notes, in 1954, a house cost $10,000, rent was $85 and a movie ticket was 70 cents. And Wolodymyr Darmochawal and his wife Olha opened a small newsstand, candy shop and lunchonette that they named after the Ukrainian word for "rainbow."
