Parting weekend shot

One of the hawk fledglings playing on an antenna on Seventh Street tonight just outside Tompkins Square Park... thanks to Goggla for sharing the photo. (Find more of her hawk pics here.)

Hi, I'm a baby hawk

The first of the three Tompkins Square Park hawklets fledged on Thursday (by now, the other two may have as well)...

EVG regular peter radley shared these photos of the first fledger from yesterday afternoon... striking a pretty badass pose...

The first of Christo and Dora's eggs hatched in late April. So this one is roughly 8 weeks old. They grow so big with the daily rat tasting menus.

Updated 1:16 p.m.

Apparently the third hawklet just fledged...

Today's baby hawk watch in Tompkins Square Park

Checking in with Christo and Dora's latest red-tailed hawk offspring this afternoon...

To date, I've still only seen two of the three babies... will check in with Goggla for more about this.

Look at the babies!

In recent days, at least two of Christo and Dora's 3-week-old offspring started poking their heads out from the duplex nest in Tompkins Square Park (inside the Eighth Street entrance off Avenue B) ... Bobby Williams got a few photos of the nestlings ...

Sources say that Christo and Dora's other six kids feel as if this 2016 class is pretty spoiled growing up in a large nest in an actual tree as opposed to a stupid air conditioner, like in 2014 and 2015.

Goggla has some great shots of the nest and Christo and Dora being red-tailed hawks right here.

Bringing up babies on the side streets

Unlike last summer, when the young hawks spent much of their formative months in Tompkins Square Park, Christo and Dora's 2015 fledglings have been keeping to the side streets near their former nest at the Ageloff Towers on Avenue A and East Third Street.

So there have been several hawklet sightings on side streets between Avenue A and Avenue B and East Sixth Street and East Third Street.

East Village resident Emily Reese shared this ...

One of Christo and Dora's brood decided to take a break outside my living room window.

The hawk seemed giant. I guess it was two feet from its toes to the top of its head. It was sitting facing away from the window at first, but it noticed me and moved to face me as I began to photograph it. It stayed for 20 minutes, first on the west side of my north-facing fire escape ... Then it shifted to the east side, much to the terror of my two pet birds just inside. It was amazing to watch.

Toward the end of the hawk's visit, she decided to close the aperture and slow the shutter speed on her camera to try to capture the beautiful movement of the hawk's feathers ...

As always, Goggla has been been keeping tabs on the hawk clan (here and here). You may also find more Christo-and-Dora activity at TwoHawksNYC here.

Screen gems: Christo and Dora's 1st summer offspring enjoys hanging out

EVG reader John Coakley shared these photos... one of Christo and Dora's recent offspring — identified as Fledgling #1 — stopping by for a visit the other day at the Ageloff Towers...

...keeping the east-facing windows down (won't anyone think about the the cats?) might be a good idea.

Turns out that Fledgling #1 has a thing for window screens, as Goggla notes at Gog in NYC here. And Two Hawks NYC has video of Fledgling #1 in action.

Fledge frenzy; plus hawks immortalized in yarn

All three of Christo and Dora's offspring have fledged this past week... leaving the nest on the Ageloff Towers on Avenue A and East Third Street and seeing what this neighborhood has to offer, like large church clocks...

Check out Gog in NYC and TwoHawksNYC for some comprehensive coverage.

In the meantime on Avenue A below, local businesses are getting into the red-tailed hawk spirit... with Exit9 and Downtown Yarns showing their hawk pride...

Thanks to Goggla for the yarn photos!

2 hawks fledge as 1

Hawk watchers were happy today to see two of Christo and Dora's three offspring successfully fledge today... (thankfully none of that drama like last year.)

One of the kids ended up atop 507 East Fifth St., the building that houses Sophie's just east of Avenue A...

The TwoHawksNYC blog has an account with photos of what happened today right here. And Goggla will have photos soon.

The baby hawks have been nesting 12th floors above Avenue A on the Ageloff Towers between East Third Street and East Fourth Street…

Growing up so quickly above Avenue A

EVG reader Bill Massey shared these photos of Christo and Dora's offspring growing up so quickly on the Frigidaire AC at the Ageloff Towers …

Goggla had an update yesterday on the hawklets here on Avenue A and East Third Street:

I'm a bit worried about the next couple of weeks as the baby hawks are so big and clumsy, and the nest is so small. When they flap their wings, they stumble around and it's unnerving to see them doing that so close to the edge. But, they are birds and this is what they do...

Check out her photos and narrative here. And check out how crowded the nest is via the Avenue A Hawk Cam.

Some time between Friday and Sunday, all three of Christo and Dora's hawk eggs hatched in the nest on the Ageloff Towers.

There's now a second nest cam from another angle here on Avenue A at East Third Street, so you can see the hawklets upclose right here

Goggla has more details about all this and what the red-tailed hawk parents are up to. Goggla figures fledge time will be in mid-June.

Time-lapse video takes you through the months with the baby hawks of Tompkins Square Park

[One of the kids in the Park Saturday via Grant Shaffer]

The three offspring of Christo and Dora have been busy frolicking in Tompkins Square Park of late, as Goggla continues to document.

They started their lives up on the AC unit on the Christodora House ... where residents in the apartment agreed to have a nest cam set up to monitor the birds. As for a timeline, the nest arrived in February ... followed by the eggs in April ... and the last fledgling left the house on July 2.

East Village resident and photographer Francois Portmann has posted the following time-lapse video ...

Hold on!

Where are they now? Baby Hawk Edition!

[One of the youngsters via Bobby Williams]

Well, baby hawk No. 3 finally left the nest on the Christodora House last Wednesday... which is why you don't see passersby staring up at the building anymore on Avenue B and East Ninth Street.

So where are the kids? (Fortunately, is has been fairly drama-free since Shaft left the nest.)

Goggla continues to keep track, and has a report over at Gog in NYC.

One observation:

They're getting accustomed to trees, having spent their entire lives on an air-conditioner. I find it interesting that all three birds fledged to the buildings across 9th Street and seemed to prefer roofttops to treetops.

She answers other pertinent questions too, such as, Where are their parents, Christo and Dora? Do the siblings get along? And are the squirrels in Tompkins Square Park playing nice?

Also, Francois Portmann has posted the last of the nest-cam photos here.

Last in the fledge class

Just one of the (baby?!?!) hawks remains in the nest on the Christodora House ... his/her fledgling siblings have already taken off.

After a little drama Monday night, Shaft has seemingly found his, uh, wings. The second fledgling left Tuesday. He/she has been mostly hanging around East Ninth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C. Goggla has an update on the fledglings here.

Hawk watchers figure hawk No. 3 will leave the nest tomorrow.

Baby hawk down

Picking up from last night's post… the first of the young hawks living on an AC unit at the Christodora House on Avenue B and East Ninth Street took flight yesterday morning.

According to Goggla, who has been documenting the parents, Christo and Dora, and their three offspring, the hawk fledged at 10:49 a.m. He glided across East Ninth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C … and that's when he went missing.

A search commenced. Around 6 p.m., a group of residents, including Walt Fitzpatrick, Karen Martinez, Cliff Maloney, Father Pat Maloney, as well as bird watchers Dennis Edge and Francois Portmann, eventually found the fledgling … and someone called Rob Mastrianni, an urban park ranger (he recently rescued a fledgling in Washington Square Park), who arrived to lead the rescue efforts…

Ranger Rob deemed that the fledgling was uninjured … and placed him in a tree in Tompkins Square Park.

As Goggla noted, we hope that "the remaining two siblings watched and learned something today." Goggla has more about the rescue and a lot more photos here.
