Reader mailbag: I need a small kitchen space for my business

I'm an East Village resident looking for a very tiny kitchen space (without a storefront) in the area, something hopefully the size of where Otafuku used to be (236 E. Ninth St.). I just need to fit an oven, a refrigerator and a table for rolling out dough. I deliver pastries throughout NYC and I ship them nationally but I want to move on from using a shared space kitchen in Brooklyn.

It's kind of an odd request because of the lack of storefront.

A longtime EVG reader writes in...

"Do you know any person or place that would still be interested in records? We're moving and the records can't come with us, and we have decades of stuff ... there's little if any monetary value to some of the records, but someone somewhere may want them."

The reader figures there are at least 500 LPs (pictured above), probably "mostly 1960s & some '70s and some guitar stuff." There are also some 78s.

So… Any record stores around here still buying some vinyl?

A member of an East Seventh Street co-op board writes:

We got cited recently by the NYC Environmental Control Board for having some of our gas meters in the common hallways ... contrary to a code augmentation memo dating from 1975. We are trying to argue that we are grandfathered to get around the big expenses of moving meters into apartments or the basement ... we've also heard a rumor that many other buildings in the neighborhood are getting hit. This violation is currently causing us grief in renewing our insurance, and could cost us many thousands to cure, so we want to try and band together if there are others in our situation.

So… Any other co-op members have information to share? Have you been cited by the ECB? Have you successfully navigated moving the meters?

Pretty straightforward question.

But there are many variables or something. Like! Who the gift is for. Do they live here now? Did they used to live here and are a little nostalgic? Blah blah. (In the reader's case, the gift is for his girlfriend who he shares an apartment with…)

I suggested buying a print from the Museum of the City of New York's archives. As an example. Here is the view to the northwest from the roof of the Christodora House on Avenue B and East Ninth Street circa Feb. 5, 1929.

There are also a few cool things for sale (T-shirts, books, zines, etc.) at the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS) at 155 Avenue C between East Ninth Street and East 10th Street.

The reader was interested in hearing suggestions from other readers… which might be a really bad idea. Kidding! So does anyone have a suggestion that isn't related to Hoboken hoofs/hooves or isn't blatant Yelp-like shilling for a particular store? (It's OK to name a store, as long as you don't seem spammy or public relationsy about it.)

OK, technically it was a Twitter mailbag… as the question came via a tweet… Anyway!

Can we talk about how hard it is to find a cup of coffee in the East Village before 6 am? Any recommendations for 24-hour spots?

Well, many of the coffee places (whatever you might like — 9th Street Espresso, Mud, The Bean, Think, Everyman, Third Rail, B Cup, Ost, etc., etc.) tend to open at 7 a.m. and beyond.

So. Quickly. Rays's Candy Store, Gem Spa, Sunny & Annie's…

How about it? (Unacceptable answers include 7-Eleven and "Make it at home your self lazyass.") We know that people don't seem to be too opinionated about coffee and coffee shops, right? Don't be too shy!

Reader request: A granny bike for a homeless woman

Via the EV Grieve inbox...

Does anyone have or know where I can get an old granny bike (a small ladies step through) with a front basket and back carrier? I know sweet this 76 yr old French homeless woman called Jacqueline who lives down at the east river on 20th st and ave C. If you ever walk around the Stuy Cove you may have seen her. She is disabled and lost her bike during the storm (which was her home and only means to get around). I promised her I would get her a bike this weekend and I am willing to pay for it if it's not too expensive ... or maybe someone has one that they are throwing out.

Reader requests: 'At least you...' WHAT?

From an EVG reader:

I need your help. Every morning while walking on 2nd Ave, I see half of a phrase written on the top of a building on the NW corner of 7th St. and 2nd Ave. All I'm ever able to make out is "AT LEAST YOU", but I am dying to find out what the rest of it says.

Anyone have access to the roof? A helicopter? Anyone know the rest of what is written there...?

Reader requests: Looking for an East Village caterer

An EVG reader asked if we had any recommendations for an East Village-based caterer to provide appetizers-hors d'oeuvres for an event... Well, we have no idea. Any readers with a recommendation?

The event is for 50-75 people later this fall... "Normal finger food. Party food kind of stuff," said the reader. So, nothing artisanal-farm-to-tablish featuring bone marrow stuffed with crushed, dehydrated black beans drizzled with sweet and tangy passionfruit sauce.

Uh, anyway. Any catering help?
