Where a grand elm stood

As reported yesterday, yesterday's high winds and heavy rain brought down one of the majestic American elm trees in Tompkins Square Park.

By early last evening, a crew was in the Park removing the tree from near the entrance on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.

Steven took these photos today. The winds uprooted the tree, which apparently had a weak root system (or so an onlooker surmised) ...
Tompkins Square Park still hosts a large assemblage of elms ... how many, don't know. Been awhile since this tree map was updated.

Tree down in Tompkins Square Park

The high winds today brought down a tree (updated: one of the grand American Elms) in Tompkins Square Park... EVG reader Eddie shared these photos, showing the fallen tree near the entrance on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place...
While this is the second large tree to fall during a storm this year ... workers did plant up to 20 new ones in the Park late last year.

Updated 5:30 p.m.

... and late this afternoon... crews were on the scene ... the St. Mark's Place entrance is currently closed...

[Updated] Tropical storm Isaias brings down tree limbs in Tompkins Square Park

Updated 4 p.m.: City workers have closed the Park for now. Updated 7 p.m. Most entrances were back open.

The heavy rains and winds from tropical storm Isaias brought down a number of limbs in Tompkins Square Park early this afternoon... most notably from the grand Elm near the entrance on Seventh Street and Avenue B...

... and a look at other areas of the Park...

... there were multiple other reports of downed branches around the neighbor, including behind this building on Avenue A at Fifth Street...

... and at the East River Park running track ... (thanks Wendy Rubin for this photo!)

There's also a report of a sidewalk bridge collapse with injuries on Avenue A and Third Street. Will update when more information is available.

Down at 1st

EVG reader William Klayer shares these photos from this morning at East Houston and the FDR along East River Park ... showing a tree casualty from yesterday's late-afternoon/early-evening storms that passed through the city...

The tree appears to have fallen roughly where first base is on the ballfield... (looks like field 4?)
