Will we be posting a lot of snow photos this winter?

Seventh and A a few winters ago

AccuWeather unveiled its Winter 2022-23 snowfall outlook for the country yesterday.

So what can we expect in NYC? AW is forecasting seasonal snowfall totals of 18-23 inches here, which would be below average for NYC... with between six and nine "days of accumulating snow."
And a lot of snow likely won't make a difference for public schools. New York City School Chancellor David C. Banks previously announced that there will be no snow days during the 2022-2023 academic year, NBC News reported

In a show of solidarity with the students, we will take the days off for them.

Monday's parting shots

The city has dumped a lot of salt on the streets ahead of the mixed precipitation (aka sleet) that we're expecting overnight... Vinny & O noted the salt mines on Avenue A and Avenue B this evening...

Our radar imagery is currently showing more steady precipitation, which will become widespread across the East Village late this evening into overnight.

Today in photos of frozen fire hydrants in the East Village

We have learned exclusively that it is cold out today.

Or maybe these are just sneak previews of new winter drinks from Booker & Dax...

Today is the first day of spring

Read somewhere that NYC received 4.5 inches of snow this whole winter (December-January-February).

Did you miss it a little?

Parks Department apparently doesn't care if you fall on your ass on the way to the Tompkins Square Park dog run

Where the term "sheet of ice" is acceptable to use. I've heard some people grumble about this... things like, "Would it kill them to throw down a little salt over here..."

NYC blizzards...in 1948 and 1888

Here are two of my favorite blizzard-related photos from the Corbis archives...

Times Square in 1948...

...and Union Square in 1888... Per the original caption:

"The Perils of Union Square in the midst of the Blizzard". Scene of people struggling to walk in Union Square during the blizzard of 1888. Wood engraving.

Think of a possible caption from yesterday...

"The Perils of Union Square in the midst of the Blizzard". Scene of people struggling to walk in Union Square during the so-called blizzard of 2010 while carrying those Earth-friendly Whole Foods paper bags that shred at the first drop of moisture because you didn't bring your own recyclable bag*. Digital photo.

As deadly blizzard bears down on NYC, people bravely go about their business tonight as if it was just any other Tuesday night

Our Team Coverage Starts Now.

Despite the calm surface, there are troubling signs of challenging days ahead. For instance, tonight, Key Food on Avenue A is dangerously low on several items...

Like duck leg confit...

..and Ithaca Apricot Wheat beer...

... and Wonka Tinglerz...

...and fat-free hazelnut Coffee-mate...

On a serious note, though...while walking by Whole Foods Bowery a little later, I noticed that the bananas are going quickly...

...as are the plastic carrying things to, uh, carry them around the store in...

Despite the most-hyped blizzard NYC has experienced since last Friday, EV Grieve will be posting tomorrow

We're doomed! Again!

Slipriani

With the snow/sleet/rain/shit coming down this morning, walking and driving were treacherous. Just ask the driver of this Cipriani truck, which ended up on its side on Second Avenue at 11th Street this morning around 8. This huge tow truck came along and pulled the Cipriani truck back upright. No word whether any Carpacio Alla Cipriana was damaged during the spill.
