UGH: Another large tree branch falls in Tompkins Square Park

Walking to watch the Tompkins Square Park Riot Reunion Shows this afternoon, we noticed that the Meadow was empty... it is hot, but...

Turns out that it's closed. The reason: A large branch fell, as these photos by Bobby Williams show... UGH.

A Park worker told Bobby that the limb came down around 2 a.m. ... (apparently it was a little windy last night?)

Last time a branch fell in the Park, workers had to take down the whole tree. We can't lose another one. By my probably inaccurate count, we've lost eight trees in the Park since Hurricane Irene last summer.

Scaffolding and blue paint at St. Brigid's

Workers are putting up scaffolding this morning at St. Brigid's here on Avenue B at Eighth Street... presumably to start work on the small spires for the north tower...

Meanwhile, glad we got a photo of this on the plywood the other day...

Join us for the fifth annual Summer Streets! On August 4, 11 and 18 from 7 am to 1 pm, nearly seven miles of New York City's streets will be opened up for everyone to play, run, walk and bike. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets you can rock climb at Spring Street, receive a free bike helmet at 51st Street, soar through the air on a zip line at Foley Square or just stroll along and experience the city's streets in a new way—all for free.

The sign say it goes until 2; the website 1... we'll call it even at 1:30...
