Where is Eloise?

Seems to be a rash of missing pets in the East Village in the last week or so... here's the story of Eloise, a 16-pound Border Terrier ...

The owner writes in that his dog Eloise was taken yesterday morning at 5 a.m. from in front of the Olympic Grocery at 13th Street and First Avenue ... He had gone in for a quick moment and left Eloise out front. He placed a "missing dog" ad on Craigslist and the Voice.

He received a response from the Craigslist ad around yesterday afternoon. The e-mailer included a detailed description of the person who may have Eloise. This is what she wrote:

I am certain I saw your dog today!

A man was walking her down 1st or 2nd avenue around 11th street. My dog wanted to say hi to her and he told me he found her tied up outside a store. He thought she'd been abandoned. She was scared, but physically ok.

He was clearly not in his right mind (it was noon and he said he'd just woken up and was up stealing dogs at 5 am). He said he'd called the number on the tag - 311, but no one picked up. He was trying to let the dog find her way home. He was a tall white man with dark hair and a large tattoo of a bird on the inside of one of his forearms. I would say he was in his 40s or 50s (but I'm not good at telling peoples ages).

He said if he couldn't find the owner, he wanted to keep her. I tried to convince him to call 311 again because they'd have record of her owner and he said he would. I want to stress that this man was clearly not in his right mind but I do not think he would hurt the dog, he really seemed to like her and wanted to come up with a name for her if he couldn't find the
owner.

Here's more information...

More on Joey Ramone Place

Last Thursday, I wrote about trying to find Joey Ramone Place on the Bowery and Second Street....

The Post follows up on the piece today... And on page three — right next to Lindsay Lohan!

Per the Post piece by Jeremy Olshan, who also gave me credit for noticing how high the sign is now:

"Joey Ramone Place" is perhaps the most stolen of the 250,900 street signs in New York, according to the Department of Transportation, which recently asked contractors to install the sign for the fourth time since 2003.

He would have appreciated the distinction, said the group's longtime drummer, Marky Ramone, sole survivor of the Ramones' longest-running lineup.

"But maybe they should find a better way to attach it," he said. "Now you have to be an NBA player to see it."

Although most street signs are about 12 to 14 feet off the ground, Joey Ramone Place was raised to 20 feet, an oddity first noted on the blog EV Grieve.

Speaking of Joey, video maker Paul Dougherty sent along this piece on the sign dedication back in 2003...

People waiting in line outside Prune don't read signs

You've seen the big lines here at Prune on First Street for weekend brunch....

While you're standing there, then you may want to read this sign next door outside the home of the Lower Eastside Girls Club....

Not that people are really paying attention to the sign....

Dogs-people battle brewing in Tompkins Square Park?

Queen Vic opens today (and without an awning!)

After the quick succession of 2x4, Ambiance, Evolution...it looks as if the awning streak comes to end here at Second Avenue and Fourth Street... oh, and the Brit-style pub/eatery opens today....

And here's the menu ... or at least the parts of it that I photographed... There's an English menu with Bangers and Mash, Fish and Chips, Toad-in-a-Hole... and "an American Grille Menu" featuring deep-fried hot dogs and Buffalo wings... There's also an Afternoon High Tea...

Pints seem pricy... $8.50 for a Bass or Guinness?

Another missing Pomeranian

Saw that these flyers went up over the weekend... spotted this one on Avenue B and Sixth Street...

Earlier this summer, Sammy, another Pomeranian, went missing...

No sympathy for Sammy?

Speaking of Sammy... As far as I know, Sammy is still missing. (I recently saw a Craigslist ad offering the cash reward.) I continue to see new flyers too.

Meanwhile, I was always curious why so many of the flyers were defaced... (Aside from the fact that, there were just more of them...) What was it about these missing pet signs that prompted someone to write, say, "Moved to LA" on them?

Superdive sign recap (and bar recap)

So Superdive has reopened — at least temporarily. And there are all sorts of signs out front....

So the bar is open...

...and it's for sale...

And we asked the folks at Superdive just what's going on. Here's their response, via e-mail:

1) our new literacy program ( invented by babydive with his "dive says read" slogan) needs money to support it.

with that in mind superdive is available for benefits designed for parents associations in the east village that support or benefit local schools. superdive will contribute the space as well as 2 kegs to any school or association so that they can have a party designed to benefit local pals of babydive. quite simply "A KEG PARTY TO BENEFIT KIDS" . the school or association can organize a pay to enter party with the proceeds donated to the school. soft drinks as well as kidfriendly health drinks served for the little ones. pass it on.

2) despite the best efforts of all concerned, no single legitimate operator stepped forward to buy and or lease the superdive space. this even with the magnanimous landlord, one michael taub, pulling out all the stops to accommodate any interested parties. everyone was scared away by the big bad wolf aka the sla committee of comm bd 3. this in spite of the fact that this space has always been a bar, i.e. korova milk bar which was open for 10 years. oh well, it is a tale for a late night yarn of monsters and the triumph of good over evil to enrapture babydive during a stormy, dark, sleepless night.

3) who doesn't love a nice cold glass of beer? even babydive from the attached picture likes to be around a good party...... A SHOUTOUT TO THE SOUTHAMPTON PUBLICK HOUSE'S IPA !!!!!!

LONG LIVE SUPERDIVE !

DIVE SAYS READ !

Doing it doggie style outside Superdive

With all the attention given to Superdive's reopening by a local hyperblogger, Bob Arihood thought he'd check out the scene in front of the Avenue A keg center for himself Saturday evening.

As he said, "The visit did not disappoint . The place was full of drunken folks ." And Bob caught these two going at it in plain view of everyone on the sidewalk (faces shaded to spare them any embarrassment at work) ...

Speaking of mating rituals... I have regrets that I didn't produce my camera quickly enough to capture a better shot of this Romeo carrying his girlfriend over his shoulder into the bar...

Lone Star's East Village connection

You've probably seen those ads for the new Fox drama 'Lone Star'....

Despite positive reviews, the show's debut episode tanked in the ratings... And the show's creator, Kyle Killen, wrote a plea on his blog for people to watch tonight....

One of the show's stars, Eloise Mumford (the blonde), lived in the East Village for several years, until she moved to Texas to film this show. She's an Atlantic Theater Company alum. This is her first big role... the show's on tonight at 10.

King Gyro for First Avenue

Something called King Gyro opening here on First Avenue between Fourth Street and Fifth Street.... Can't recall what was here previously....

Barfing friend ruins chance of getting beautiful Persian girl's number

From Craigslist, of course:

Beautiful Persian girl waiting for L (my friend got sick) - m4w - 29 (East Village)

Date: 2010-09-26, 11:26AM EDT

We started talking and kind of hit it off. Then we got on the subway car and my friend got sick. Obviously it was just strait up awkward / inappropriate to ask for you number. I remember your name, job etc... so we'll leave that as confirmation if you actually end up reading this and replying.

Lights out in Tompkins Square Park

Walking through Tompkins Square Park tonight... I noticed at least a dozen lights were out...

Mochi is missing

First Avenue and First Street.

Reminders! Free concert in Tompkins Square Park this afternoon

Featuring:

Wombat IN Combat, The Alienz, Dog That Bites Everyone and A-Truth.

Until then... here's a little Dog That Bites Everyone....

Also, Wombat in Combat has some T-shirts leftover from the last show in the Park....

Details here.

Car fire on East Fourth Street?

We heard several reports about a car fire last night on East Fourth Street between Avenue A and Avenue B...Not much left as far as evidence goes...

Anyone have any more information?

Scenes from an early fall Sunday morning

You always take pictures of cranes

As my blogging professor taught me in my Remedial Blogging Class... (You always take pictures of cranes.)

Anyway, here on Second Avenue near Fifth Street... there is a large crane on the scene making a beer delivery to Kabin....

Kidding! They're actually creating an Bike Lane Obstacle Course. Mayor Bloomberg read that city officials did this in Amersterdam too.

Oh, c'mon ... it's early...
