Kinda seems like longer than 1 year. Well, you know, the place was closing anyway to make way for the 12-story apartment building on the lot... But people thought that they had the rest of the summer to enjoy the bar... or at least go to it.
But that DOH visit did them in on July 18, 2011 ... 54 violation points and mentions of every known type of fly. (Filth flies! Flesh flies!) And apparently owner Hank Penza said the Hell with it. And closed.
We've talked to a lot of people who really miss the place... people still searching for somewhere else to fit in...
And how it looked yesterday...

And on the East First Street plywood ... old-school Yelp? ...

Ahh... nothing like getting to work in the morning, opening up EVGrieve and seeing some naked man-butt first thing!

From here on out, this content will cost extra!
Sigh. Thanks for the silly picture though, made me laugh.
I was there with some friends on the last day. Wow, it's been a year? Of course none of us knew it was going to be the last day...
In the end, it went out with a whimper, not a bang.
:-(
I was there with Shawn and others on the last day. We were all wondering when it was going to close and I remember saying, "Wouldn't it be funny if this was the last day?" Well, it was and as it turned out, it wasn't funny at all.
And the only things the DOH managed to eradicate were the bar flies.
It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times.
hahah! Marty, no not funny at all. At least we were there until the end. Boooooourns
wow it does seem a lot longer. I still haven't been able to walk past it. I used to go to Mars in the 80's but then moved away and moved on with my life. About 3 years ago my life had changed and I needed to escape from my house in NJ and started hanging out in NYC again. I rediscovered what I had been missing and a small part of it was hanging out drinking with strangers at Mars on saturday afternoons. It is missed but it helped get me back on track so I have moved on with my life, so thank Mars.
