By now, of course, you know that the Mars Bar has closed. The City inspected the place on Monday afternoon and found a lot of fruit flies — like 850! (How precise is this number?)
Anyway! The DOH has finally updated its website with the report... we were a little curious about all this... How bad was it?
Well, 54 total violation points. Not in Fu Sushi's league.

Establishment Closed by DOHMH. Violations were cited in the following area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed. ("Critical" violations are displayed in red.)
Sanitary Violations
1) Food Protection Certificate not held by supervisor of food operations.
2) Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
3) Filth flies or food/refuse/sewage-associated (FRSA) flies present in facility’s food and/or non-food areas. Filth flies include house flies, little house flies, blow flies, bottle flies and flesh flies. Food/refuse/sewage-associated flies include fruit flies, drain flies and Phorid flies.
4) Facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.
5) Non-food contact surface improperly constructed. Unacceptable material used. Non-food contact surface or equipment improperly maintained and/or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
6) Proper sanitization not provided for utensil ware washing operation.

@Spike: Ha ha ha! Me too! And I don't get the food violations, they didn't sell food. And the flies were on the house. And apparently inside as well!

Ahahaha! I want to slap this sticker on a number of businesses in the area...
If I'm not mistaken, ice is considered "food" by the DOH. So are lemons/limes/etc for all the fancy cocktails Mars used to make.
Fruit flies are a beloved delicacy here in the East Village. When is the DOH going to get that?
Food? I do remember getting in a fight outside the bar around 1982 and then going in for a beer. I bit my lip during the scuffle so I had a small piece of skin loose in my mouth and since my told me not to spit in public I swallowed it.....do you think that's the food the DOH is talking about?
yes
it's kind of stupid to rate bars for food even though they have fruit and dairy for their drinks. most of the "food" sits in alcohol.
i know there is a push by the city to produce income by generating tickets but we would all be better served if the DOH stuck to restaurants, supermarkets and other food venders.
Those were organic, free-range 'artisinal' fruit flies...
Where am I going to get dinner now that this is closed?
I'd suggest this is an opportunity to stop being a poseur at a dive bar and go hang out with the bums on the steps of the collegiate reformed church on 2nd ave or wherever else their drinking school ends up on 6th street, you can piss puke bleed drink and sleep all while remaining sitting in the same place, but be advised its not a life for poseurs. Only for serious drinkers.
