Friday's parting shots

Earth Day scenes from the former amphitheater at East River Park (above) ... and the former cherry tree grove in Corlears Hook Park...
Activists at the scene today said that workers yelled "Happy Earth Day" to them between cutting down more trees.
The trees are coming down as part of the ongoing $1.45 billion East Side Coastal Resiliency project.

It is a disgrace what they have done to that park. Especially now when spring is coming, and the trees and flowers would be in full bloom in the park and now it is a construction site wasteland for who knows how many years.

Actually , nobody has any idea how high water levels around the world will be by the time your children grow up. I do know that flooding has recently killed New Yorkers and that people up to Ave.C were flooded a few years ago. If you want more trees move upstate or start becoming full time climate change advocates. Citizens , including Rev. Billy , who have been arrested or protested against the cutting of trees and other changes to ths park should be linking this to the world wide coming effects of global warming. Personally , I am glad I have no kids because we are leaving them with a very dangerous future which commenters on all the EV stories about this seem to have ignored.

I guess you don’t realize there was an earlier plan that involved a berm next to the FDR to protect against any rising water, it wouldn’t have involved leveling the park (but involved some disruption to the FDR). The city then randomly changed to this plan, against vocal community opposition.

Thank You John! I would also like to add that there is a massive fossil fuel burning power plant right next to the east river park. Maybe we should put some focus on changing that if everyone is so concerned about the air quality I this area.

I'd like to add that one very unpopular action that everyone can take is to go vegan; animal agriculture is so complicit in the destruction of the environment, it seems like a no-brainer to try and mitigate its effects by taking the simple action of eliminating or reducing the consumption of animal products like meat, dairy, and honey.

Ultimately, this could help prevent or slow the rising of the coastline; sadly, for most people consuming animal products is a "personal choice."

Someone left this comment by mistake on the Surfbort-Tony Hawk clip:

"Activists at the scene today said that workers yelled "Happy Earth Day" to them between cutting down more trees."

If anyone, especially the trolls who would come out on these EV Grieve East River Park threads to spiel their lies, that this CF of a "plan" that wiped out the plan that had years of community input/planning, that truly addressed climate change, was not simply a REBNY/construction union/NYC Mayor/CC corruption F off plan, well here's your answer.

Very sad what has become of this beloved land. It will take a great number of years until this monstrosity is complete. What a waste of wildlife, urban respite, and tax payer money where greedy politicians benefit and where the backs of loyal residents who fought diligently to ensure this didn't happen will suffer most. Just great!

Heat exhaustion has killed more people in the city than flooding. Destroying 1000 mature trees near the FDR, con Ed plant and two bridges is really irresponsible when it comes to human health. We know that mature trees help to absorb water and cool temperature significantly. We need to breathe!
Not all people can afford to vacation or move upstate.
Another plan with less destruction was possible!
