More of 14th and Third ready for something new

On the southwest corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue, you have your new burger place opening some day, as DNAinfo noted... the retail space adjacent to the corner, formerly home to the salon, is now on the market...

Now with some ghost signage from a previous tenant...

...and the salon is just relocating a few blocks away...

Somewhere over the double rainbow on 14th Street

Cool shot from earlier this evening via @pauljonwallace.

Triple bonus points for the double rainbow shot from this vantage....

Meat coming to the southwest corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue

We've been wondering what might be coming here to the former Robin Raj space... And Patrick Hedlund at DNAinfo has the answer: An outpost of 5 Napkin Burger, or a variation of it.

Rebecca Marx at the Voice last week named the 5 Five Napkin veggie burger as the best in the city.

Meanwhile, this is NOT their veggie burger:

Assessing the damage at Otto's Shrunken Head

According to a reader, the damage at Otto's from this morning's fire isn't as bad as first feared. Still, the back room is a mess... Everyone seems to be saying the same thing: It could have been a lot worse.

Also, according to the reader, the residents who live in the building above Otto's were allowed back inside their homes just after 11 a.m....

Only a few police officers and fire personnel remain on the scene. 14th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B has been reopened to traffic.

Breaking: Early-morning fire at Otto's Shrunken Head

An employee arriving to work this morning just after 9 at Otto's Shrunken Head on 14th Street was met with thick black smoke coming from inside the bar.

According to witnesses, the employee grabbed a fire extinguisher and set about battling the source of the smoke himself. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and had things under control. No official word just yet on what started the fire. There were also no reports of injuries.

An alert super helped make sure residents who lived above the bar got out of the building. The residents also had the time to secure their pets.

More photos from this morning's fire at Otto's Shrunken Head

An EV Grieve reader passed along these photos taken right when firefighters arrived on the scene at Otto's Shrunken Head on 14th Street...

New tenant making move on southwest corner of 14th and Third

After sitting dormant for nearly 22 months, the prime patch of real estate on the southwest corner of 14th Street and Third Avenue apparently has an incoming tenant... workers just put up the freshly painted green plywood...

Robin Raj moved a few hundred feet away on Third Avenue in early 2009... At the time, Curbed heard from the RR guys that the new landlord wanted $60,000 a month in rent. (Heh, oh boy...)

I quickly looked at the DOB records... nothing too alarming afoot... nothing like, a mate for 123 Third Ave. ... Per the DOB:

Application is filed to combine two buildings. General construction, plumbing structural work, install new storefront, install temporary wood fence to be removed upon completion of work...

Even with three Duane Reades and one Walgreens within a block or two of here ... I have to go with a Duane Reade...

Recession not over until Vanessa's says it is

The big news yesterday... those party animals at The National Bureau of Economic Research said that the recession ended in June 2009.

My ass.

It's not over. You know why? Because the "recession special" sign is still up at Vanessa's Dumplings on 14th Street near Third Avenue....

The Vanessa's sign has been up since the fall of 2008... when it comes down, then we'll know the recession is really over.

I suggest that the fine folks at The National Bureau of Economic Research start eating some dumplings in the meantime.

[Updated] A bike-car collision on 14th and B?

A reliable source passes along word that there was another bike-car collision ... earlier this afternoon at 14th Street and Avenue B.... Anyone have any details?

Per a tipster:

I came by there about 5 minutes after the accident happened. It occurred on the Stuyvesant Town service road between bicycle and an Audi A6. The bicycle rider was a male in his early 20's, and the Audi driver appeared to be in his late 20's with a cast on his arm. The Audi's windshield was demolished from the bike rider going over the hood and hitting it, and the bike was damaged too. The biker didn't appear too hurt, as he had some gauze on his right arm, I believe was put on by a ST security guard.

East Village losing its Nathan's/Pizza Hut/Arthur Treacher's mashup

The northwest corner of Second Avenue and 14th Street is fairly unremarkable... You got your Pizza Hut-Nathan's-Arthur Treacher's combo...

Maybe not for too much longer... that block is on the, eh, block...

As the ad says, "Same great place. Brand new look."

A new look that doesn't include the current tenants. The space can be chopped up into several pieces... and even the second floor may be available...

Remembering Walid Menswear

Walid Menswear went out of business on 14th Street between Second Avenue and Third Avenue last month... As noted, I always liked that Walid sign...

Paul Dougherty, a long-time video maker, sent along this film that he made about Walid back in January... it's titled "Before Old-School" ...
